Bill Maher: Obama Drank A 40 While Sonia Sotomayor Brought The Guacamole (VIDEO)

Bill Maher

Bill Maher phoned-in for an interview on "Way Too Early with Willie
Geist" Friday morning, staying awake until 2:40AM on the West coast to do Geist's 5:30AM ET show.

The interview began on a lighthearted note, with Maher riffing on Barack Obama's beer summit with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley.

"Just to mess with the conservatives, Obama was drinking a forty of King Cobra," Maher said. "I swear I saw Sonia Sotomayor bringing some guacamole into that room."

Maher lamented that "between [the Gates story] and Michael Jackson, I have no idea what's going on with Jon and Kate these days".

The conversation turned serious when Maher began to muse on the nature of racism today, which he said is at "an unconscious level".

"Racism has moved on, it's a lot more subtle now" Maher noted.

Love it, keep it up Bill

If you don't understand his sense of humor, you are probably somewhere in the south. Sorry.

Maher hates everything conservative with no good reasons. One thing he is really sure of is that he is smarter than everyone else.
05:21 PM on 08/02/2009
The new racism is definitely more subtle than the old kind. He's very right about that.

My view is it is not more subtle. I think the conservative "base" is in full out racist mode. I'll bet if you checked the email servers of Gov't. workers in the southern states there would be enough blatant racism in the form of "jokes" to float a destroyer.

To whom is it more subtle? Not to those who have been dealing with it for centuries.

Oh no, the poor fear/hatemongers are being oppressed because that nasty Mr. Maher is making fun of them.

Ok, I love Bill Maher. But, his guacamole comment regarding Sotomayor could be characterized as "subtly racist", to coin his phrase.
02:03 PM on 08/02/2009
The guacamole comment was making fun of the idiots that see Judge Sotomayor as a collection of stereotypes.

That's right and the Obama having a 40. Bill Maher say things and we know it's too be funny. He's a comedian. He doesn't mean any harm, but a person saying it who's not a comedian like O'Reilly or O.x.y.rush, they just trying to be mean to people of color.

Sorry Bitsko, but I have to disagree. Maher's show this week was hilarious, the ratings are up and his documentary from last year is #6 or #7 on the list of top ten highest grossing documentaries of all time. He also sells out nearly every comedy show he does, and his last HBO special was great in my opinion.

He tells risky jokes that not everyone thinks are funny, but that's pretty much what most comedians do.

what a ridiculous article.
Bill Maher also interviewed Jeff Sharlet, author of "The Family".

while birthers and Sotomayor bringing guacamole to the beer summit may be cute... a much larger issue is (seemingly) overlooked by our entire media establishment.

the interview was, quite frankly, terrifying.

I wish I'd seen it. I'll look for it on youtube. Here is a link to Sharlet's article in Harper's. I share your concern. These people are insane, and their membership includes many of the most powerful people in the country and the world. Rachel Maddow also did a few stories on them, links below.

It was one of the best shows Bill Maher has done.

I fully agree that our entire media establishment has overlooked one of the biggest stories happening today in not exploring the C Street Gang. What Jeff Sharlet had to say about "the Family" was indeed terrifying. I highly recommend that everyone hunt down a replay of this show.

Thanks a lot for the links, SmolderingRuin.

Wow, more racism from the left. This is absolutely disgusting.

That title is loaded, I was ready to roast Bill Maher but after reading the article I laughed.

NOTE TO BILL

Guacamole is a Mexican dish. They don't do it in Puerto Rico.

Tostones yes, guacamole no.

eat up

I think that was the point he was making. Racism is part of the ethos. From the viewpoint of the average white American, if she's of Latino heritage she must make guacamole and sound like Topo Gigio.
10:52 AM on 08/02/2009
If someone disagrees with you and makes a comment like Maher did, they're racist. If some you agree with makes a comment like that, they're "commenting on racism."

Oh, and for the record, Topo Gigio was italian.
