Lou Dobbs A "Publicity Nightmare" For CNN: AP

First Posted: 9/2/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Dobbs

AP -- He's become a publicity nightmare for CNN, embarrassed his boss and hosted a show that seemed to contradict the network's "no bias" brand. And on top of all that, his ratings are slipping.

How does Lou Dobbs keep his job?

It's not a simple answer. CNN insists it is standing behind Dobbs, despite calls for his head from critics of his reporting on "birthers" - those who believe President Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States despite convincing evidence to the contrary. The "birthers" believe Obama was born in Kenya, and thus not eligible to be president.

Dobbs' work has been so unpopular that even Ann Coulter has criticized him.

Dobbs has acknowledged that he believes Obama was born in Hawaii. But he gives airtime to disbelievers, and has said the president should try to put questions fully to rest by releasing a long version of his birth certificate. He's twice done stories on his show after the public leak of a memo from CNN U.S. President Jon Klein saying that "it seems this story is dead."

Klein said those stories were OK because they were about the controversy and weren't actually questioning the facts. But critics suggest Klein is parsing words, that even raising the issue lends it credence.

Joked The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes: it "explains their upcoming documentary: `The World: Flat. We Report - You Decide."'

Dobbs hasn't made it any easier by using his radio show to fight back at critics, who he called "limp-minded, lily-livered lefty lemmings." He considered going on CNN tormentor Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show to thank him (O'Reilly says the birthers are wrong, but he defended Dobbs' right to talk about it).

"He's embarrassed himself and he's embarrassed CNN," said Brooks Jackson, a former CNN correspondent. "And that's not a good thing for any network that wants to be seen as a reputable, nonpartisan news organization."

So who needs the headache?

Klein said Dobbs does a smart newscast that explores issues that get little in-depth attention elsewhere, such as trade with China, health care funding and the stimulus plan. He suggested Dobbs' CNN work is unfairly lumped in with his unrelated radio show, and that he's judged on the show he did a couple of years ago, when Dobbs became a political target for his campaigning against illegal immigration.

The two men sat down after last year's election to make changes, aware that the anti-immigrant Dobbs' image ran counter to the brand CNN was trying to create. CNN calls itself the network of unbiased reporting compared to conservative commentators on Fox and liberal ones at MSNBC.

Since then, Dobbs has been doing a relatively straight newscast, Klein said.

"He brings more than three decades of experience reporting and broadcasting the news," Klein said, "and that's very valuable to a news network."

I love Lou! Have watched him for years. He's very intelligent! I love how he is standing up to his liberal critics! I am a Fox News fan but "channel switch" all day and night: Morning Joe, Fareed Zakaria, Anderson Cooper, Larry King, etc... When you have an open mind, no one network controls you. Actually, talk radio, Michael Savage, Beck and the internet is the only truth out there. If you are intelligent, you will make it a point to educate yourself. If CNN doesn't want you Lou, I'm sure Fox will find a spot for you like they did for Beck. I think Shepards spot would be great! He needs to go!
10:14 PM on 08/22/2009
teabagmom-do you realize that beck stated he hated the nineeleven victims families? That is a direct slap in the face to all the fallen, all of our soldiers and to us as Americans. You might want to reconsider who you so strongly back, the birthers, the deathers, the racist liars;says alot about you. sad.

I'm counting down the days until CNN fire Lou Dobbs. I'll never watch that channel again until they get rid of him. CNN used to be a respected news source. They have lost all their credibility. They risk never regaining it again if they don't remove Dobbs off the air.

I used to think Lou Dobbs was the greatest, even had a blog telling everyone to watch him.Something has happened to him and now I agree with you.He should be removed from Cnn.He has shown his true colors or has just changed his ideas.I will never watch him again.Cnn has got others that I will never miss watching so can't say I'll never watch CNN though.HOPE THEY REMOVE HIM! He is not up to their standards or mine..

Oy. The problem is, there still IS some great reporting on CNN - it's just not on during prime time.

Give me an hour of Fareed Zakaria and and hour of Christianne Armanpour every night, and THEN you would have something.

Yeah, Dobbs has kind of lost it a little bit. I wonder if TV and fame just does something to people over time, really, though. Believe it or not, when Bill O'Reilly FIRST came on the air, I found him a little bit refreshing. (but I never really ever said this out loud, did I?) That didn't last long.

Olbermann and Maddow are just about the only thing in the evenings that are worth watching, and as much as I like Keitlh (and think he's hilarious), I wish he'd dial down the venom with worst persons - a little bit, at least. I think it IS instructive to have someone, somewhere, show other shows' BS when it comes around, but there gets to be a point when it gets a little old.

And it it wasn't for Stewart and Colbert, things would be REALLY boring. :)

CNN's reputation was lost after 9/11. They were showing Saudi princes throwing parties over 9/11. Then, quickly, they stopped reporting on that and, magically, Saudi airline and tourism commercials started airing. That was it for me. They were bought and paid for by the Saudi's. It was so obvious. Haven't watched them since.

Lou Dobbs is totally destroying CNN's reputation. They'll have to get rid of him sooner than later.

I have watched Lou Dobbs for 5 years. I switch stations and listen to many points of veiw including Morning Joe, Greta Van Susteren and the new Dylan Ratigan show. I am informed and think the Lou Dobbs show is the wise professor who teaches those who wish to learn.

Wow! So many points of view--the only problem is that these folks you mention all have the same point of view.

Take a peak at Democracy Now or Rachel Maddow over on MSNBC.

Or read the BBC. The Nation may give you just the jolt you need to see what has happened to the good old USA. This is not the country I was born into. Not since your buddy Ronnie Reagan started the wrecking, and your other buddy W finished it off. It was their plan to bankrupt this nation and they did!!

You are listening to Fox News, the voice of right wing corporate propaganda.
06:54 PM on 08/05/2009
Oh, and one more thing--your buddy Wiltshire below is completely bonkers. He has joined in the great right wing idiocy that is supported by great ignorance. Birthers are ignorant. They know nothing of modern history. THey are also panicked because the republican party no longer has complete and utter control of the government. A government on the brink until we git a decent, intelligent, AMerican--BARACK OBAMA, to be or President.

I know dobbs hates immigranrs but since he appears to be white and not of Native American descent doesnt that indeed make him an immigrant. I mean those are the actual facts. Any one who is not Native American is also an immigrant to this country........its been a while but the truth is the truth.

Akat1973,
Give it up. . . . . the film is laughable and is paid for by radical (goofy) right wing, possibly racists. You lost the election and now its goal is to tear down the government. Akat1973, I'm sure you are a nice person, but you have to understand that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to massive suffering. You are being controlled by a group of people who intend to regain control of the country by any means. Give it up and lets bring the country together, not try our hardest to divide it.
10:26 PM on 08/22/2009
first if all you didint get my point.and I didnt lose any election I am a firece obama supporter. However since I live in a Red state and I am half native american I believe I do have the right to say that my ancestors were klilled by genocide of the white man.I dont want to divide this country, but you and others who do not respect indigenous people are huge part of the problem. So your point is mute. Get a clue

Yes, but let's not forget that all so-called native Americans immigrated from Asia. That's another fact. Also, currently, we think that all humans immigrated out of southern Africa. Unless, of course, we consider the fossil, "little people" recently discovered in Malayasia whose discovery throw the whole human species timescale out of whack. And before those discoveries? So, the only real citizen of this globe is the first single-celled being that evolved from inorganic stuff. Unless, of course, the first single-celled life actually fell to Earth with a Martian asteroid which makes every single one of us immigrants to Earth.

That is a great post. You are absolutely spot on with that comment.

All Americans are closely related, although you would not know it from the behavior of, say, groups of birthers who have their collective heads up their a$$e$. It is their culture that differentiates them. Culture, culture, culture.

I agree with you actually I do.....but one can not be so blind as to avoid seeing the genocides that were commited against the Native American people. Even if we crossed from asia we still made North America our home before the genocides began. That is also a fact and the true history of America. We should all respect one another as humans.

Barack Obama's mother was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

There is no doubt that the mother was an American citizen.

She met Barack Obama's father in a college language class at the University of Hawaii where both of them were students.

Why would she travel from Hawaii to Kenya to have her baby? It makes no sense.

Barack Obama was born at the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children in Hawaii on August 4, 1961.

And let's face it -- who cares anyway?

He has lived in the US for most of his life and all of his adult years.. He is a person of good character. He has had exhaustive security checks. He won the election by a huge margin.
He is perhaps the most intelligent and best educated president America has ever had and is doing a pretty good job in a tough situation. If that isn't good enough for some Americans it's hard to imagine what would be.

I note also that when, during the election campaign, some people pointed out that McCain was born in Panama the Democrats moved quickly to affirm McCain's legitimacy to run. Of course, Obama is African American and seen as liberal -- and for the bigoted rightwing fringe, the means justify the ends.

From where I sit in Australia, it tarnishes the image of Americans, even though the birthers are a crazed and tiny rabble. That they are indulged at the highest levels along with all manner of tin foiil hatters is a really bad look.

Well, the obvious question would be if Dobbs believes the president was born in the US, then he has no need to show his 'credentials.' There is at this time not a shred of credible evidence that Obama was borne anywhere other than Honolulu, Hawaii. There are no records of his mother traveling to Kenya while pregnant (check plane schedules from that time period, it would have literally taken weeks to get from Hawaii to Kenya and back again). There are no bits of passport information that support that claim, nor is there a single eyewitness or scrap of paper that suggests anything other than the president being born in Hawaii. Dobbs fancies himself a reporter, yet was unable to do the basic and very simple legwork required to debunk the myth of Obama's foreign birth. The state of Hawaii has confirmed that the certification of live birth Obama has posted is accurate and reflects the information on the longer version of this form held by the state not once, but three times. Lou can't seem to bring himself to mention that or to bother to debunk the myths about being able to register a child born outside of Hawaii as having been born there (the state will issue a certificate of live birth, but it will list the actual birthplace, not Hawaii...and that law wasn't even in place unti the 1980's). If Dobbs was sincerely interested in the story, then let him do some actual reporting.
