WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. John McCain says he'll oppose Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor when the Senate votes on her confirmation this week.

The Arizona senator calls Sotomayor a judicial activist who tried to walk back from that record during her confirmation hearings. He says President Barack Obama's nominee has used her position as a judge to try to change the law.

McCain is one of several Republicans from states with heavily Hispanic populations to come out against Sotomayor, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents raised in a New York City housing project and educated in the Ivy League.

McCain says Sotomayor's life story is inspiring and compelling, but he says that's not enough to qualify her for a position on the high court.

If anybody cared enough during the election to research McCain's war record they would have been horrified - as I was. Now apparently he has to back up his mouth about immigration reform by refusing to support Sotomayor. I'm just sayin'.

This is the first time in Mc In sane's career as a Senator that he has opposed a SC nominee. It's against the first black President, who happened to be @t him to the WH and against the first Hispanic Female SC nominee.

He had to qualify is no vote by saying that the reason, the only reason, he is in opposition is because of her activist record. Her record actually indicates she is pretty middle of the road.

He just kissed what is left of his career, goodbye. Come on AZ you know what to do!

This supreme court pick by Obama is brilliant. She's qualified , so this isnt the issue. But to see McCain have to choose between is Anti Immigrants/Nativist supporters and his ever growing hispanic population in Arizona is priceless. It gives new meaning to his comment over the weekend that the GOP has to mend its ways with the Hispanic population or they are in deep, deep trouble. The GOP may lose the hispanic vote for a generation. And to have the other half of the Hardy boys Lindsay Graham have to go for the SC pick because of his large hispanic population, when I cant recall when they were seperated on any vote, is priceless as well. Got to give Tancredo and Duncan (CA) a lot of credit- "how can I rile up my base for a 2008 Presidential run?". I know lets take a solidly conservative/Republican voting group and demonize them, and say they are causing all the countries ills from unemployement to rising healthcare costs. Yeah, great move fellas.

Amen, you betcha'!

Listen, the traditional AZ repubs were seriously repulsed at his picking Palin, disgusted with his crazy rants and decided to stay home, not vote in the last election. The local party will send one of the young, upstart gunslinger-types against him in the next primary and he will loose...he knows it and his days are numbered... it's not even funny any more to take shots at him

Are we really surprised? McCain and many of his cohorts are against ANYTHING President Obama proposes -- even in him bringing qualified diversity to the Supreme Court! While McCain says he does not feel Sotomayor is qualified for the job, we know the real reason is because she is a hispanic woman. I hope that his hispanic voters are taking notice and remember his actions should McCain run for office again.
Folks like McCain need to come into the 21st Century and realize America is a melting pot of diverse people. Thus the leadership of this country is changing and qualified Americans of all descents (i.e., African, European, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, etc.) will hold those top positions with or without his vote!

"McCain says Sotomayor's life story is inspiring and compelling, but he says that's not enough to qualify her for a position on the high court."

Mr. McCain, your life story is inspiring and compelling, but we, the people of the USofA did not think YOU were qualified for a position in the highest office of this land. Step aside! As a senior citizen and military veteran you make me sick.

McCain, who has NEVER voted against a Supreme Court nominee, should just come out and say "hey look, fellas -- not only is she NOT WHITE, but she's a WOMAN. We can't have that."

John McCain won't vote for Sonia Sotomayor - well, I am "surprised!" Apparently, Sonia Sotomayor can't compete with that "prize" he selected as his running mate. She can't "wink" as "cute" as that gun-totin' helicopter killin' "beauty queen" from Alaska (who can't even be bothered to fulfill her elected term).

McCain is a sad, bitter spitefull man on the way out. He thinks Palin was a wise choice (we allknow it wasn't) yet he snubs a "Wise " Latina. And in his next step up to the plate he ways that the GOP ought to start courting Latinos. Is this how it's done McCain. mYour world is upside down and backwards.Go figure. Nothing he does seems to be well thought out. So mark him "DONE and IRRELEVANT"
