The headline doesn't lie: the following video really does show a woman dragging her child through a Verizon Wireless store on a leash, and at surprising speed.

UPDATE: More on this incident at the Rome News-Tribune in Rome, Georgia. The woman pictured in the video was arrested and charged with first-degree cruelty to children.

I am in the Medical Field and I have Lupus
Lupus is an Inflammatory Disease.. This would NOT cause this woman to snap.. Nether would the pneumonia ....
She got caught and now she is trying to get out of it by claiming that it is a "Medical Condition" BULL

Some people feel that she should be given parenting classes ( A slap on the wrist)
It is CHILD ABUSE no matter how you look at it and the child should be taken away and she should sit in jail and think about what she did..

I sure hope she isn't allowed to get away with it

She was arrested, but we all know she'll get a slap on the wrist and the child will be returned to her. If this hasn't already happened.

Couldn't this mother just have picked the child up and carried her. Why did she have to drag her child across a filthy carpet in a busy store? The child could have gotten stepped on, bumped into a a wall, or even a rug burn. Now I don't think we should judge this woman based on this footage, but overall this was a bad call on the mothers part.

I have noticed in reading comments about this video that there seems to be a few people that think that this is as southern thing or its expected from Alabama.Abuse is a universal problem that crosses all continents and all political boundaries. After reviewing other news sources it does appear that this may have been an actual case of abuse and should be pursued further than just arrest and release. However I still contend that the little video snippet was not enough to know the full situation and that people rush to judgment. By this I mean that there was no before or after and no sound. The child could have been having fun on a ride that he talked his mom into or she could be abusing the child, but we can not know that from the video. there needs to be corroborating evidence from other sources. Video can be extremely deceptive.

Real or imagined...the message sent is the message received. Anyone with an ounce of common sense should know not to pull such a stunt in public. Then again, maybe she has less than an ounce of common sense.

I think this was an act, in which the woman and child colluded to make her appear to be an ultrabaaadaaasss and soften up the counter bimbos prior to demanding that her international roving charges be dismissed.

"Great job, Mikey! And now here's the banana caramel smoothie mommy promised..."

How can one not laugh and see the humor in this... I could not see any true child abuser performing such an act in public and how many of us have not dragged a child around at home on the carpet or out at a park... Honestly, I could see myself doing the same thing (in public) because my heart is in the right place. on a more serious note... One should not be so quick to judge others, if we can look at a film and see a man being beaten by a mob of police officers or an emt worker being choked by one and get off, we should not be so quick to pass judgement. Oh yeah, and a man being arrested for disorderly conduct in his own home... we should not be so quick to pass judgement.

One hundred percent agreed, and well said.

If those of us with children really stopped to think about it, we'd (mostly) admit that a situation might exist in which we would resort to dragging our child, and that a(n admittedly less likely) scenario might also involve a leash.

Personally, I think it's absurd that anyone could be arrested solely on the basis of this clip.

I know what happened. She added up the cost of a Verizon two-year minumum-service contract and came up with about two grand. Then she was told there are no rollover minutes and she will be charged a fee, like $35 or something, to start service. It's a real shame she took it out on the kid.

Frustrated toddler (obviously doesn't want to leave). Frustrated mother (it's obvious she does). I've seen these straps connected to children in hi traffic places so they won't get lost. It's not a leash and it's certainly not around his neck... I had a good laugh when I saw it. It's the ultimate battle of wills. People take things way too seriously. I guess maybe they think she should have aquiesed to the child??? not me...

It was a harness around the chest......the linked article said there were marks on the kid's neck but the kid seem to be just chillin to me......I think jailing this women was a bit over the top.

yea, I agree he looks like he's chillin; more like road kill on a leash, but he's not kicking, screaming or crying and maybe he really does like it in some odd and twisted way but as a grown woman she should know better. If her child likes to be dragged like that and he's unharmed then go home and have at it in your living room. However, when they go out, or anyone for that matter, it's time to conduct yourselves in an appropriate manner. Keyword: appropriate.

Yeah, but if a woman has that bad of common sense to behave that way in PUBLIC, just think how much worse her actions with her child might be in the privacy of her own home! It looked odd, just didn't look right - somethings really off here. The kid may not be "chillin" as a reaction - but maybe resigned to this form of treatment because it happens so much? In any case, it needs to be investigated to see if there is child abuse going on.

Obviously you dont know much about those harnesses.

Yes, they go around the chest. But when pulled in an upward direction, towards the face when still buckled (like shown in the video) the harness will slide up and the chest straps EASILY touch the neck. The same way that kids got strangled by jackets when the ties got caught on slides. The neck of the coat was pulled in an upwards position and applied pressure to the throat.

And it's completely possible this child is docile at that point because his mother has been treating him like a dog his entire life.

It does look to me like it is possible that the child is getting a ride on the carpet.. pay attention to the very end of the video.. you can see the kid almost jumping up at the end (just like kids do at the end of a ride).. the child wasn't struggling or showing distress of any type.. just sort of limp body and holding onto the strap. It actually looks like it might be kinda fun.

What this woman did was not right but I had a brat that acted out every time I took her anywhere and I can't tell you what I would have liked to do to her. Her older brother and sister always behaved but she didn't know the meaning of the word behave.

If a child does not behave, it is the parents' fault, not the child's.

Are you kidding? Some kids are born bouncing off the walls. It is not always negative but some kids just have an extremely high energy level. It takes time to teach them how to focus that energy in the proper way. Often these kids are the ones that grow up to be highly motivated and successful. This is why I find the labeling of so many kids as ADD and medicating them more offensive than this video.

Well, I had only two kids, but there's no way I'll ever buy into that assertion. People have distinct personalities essentially from birth (and probably before), and there is tremendous variation, even among children of the same parents raised in the same households. Because of that variation, some children are more challenging to enculturate than others, and a few are impossible.

Why can't this country mind their business! Today's outrageous charges would have 2/3rds of our parents and grand parents (and so on) arrested!

Forgive me, but someone dragging a person by the NECK, is something that should be reported. Especially a hefty woman like her dragging a child around. Charges applied here.....even in Georgia.

The kid is not being dragged by the neck.. you must have seen these harness things parents use to make sure their kids don't get lost in a crowd... it is a body harness that goes around the kids torso and shoulders... the neck is not involved.

So you're saying that you are PRO dragging children ? I don't care how much of a jerk off a kid might be acting. . . they don't deserve this type of punishment.

Mind their business??? She was in a VERIZON STORE! If i'm yelling at my boyfriend about my genital herpes in the local grocery store then SURPRISE it's no longer just my business (which by the way I don't have). If you don't want everyone "in your business" then maybe you shouldn't broadcast it in public.

"Today's outrageous charges...." blah, blah, blah! Yea it has always been a dispute when it came to spankings or whoopings, but dragging you child by a leash? I'm sorry, I don't know about everyone else but I don't recall being dragged across the floor as a child. 2/3 of our parents, really??

Exactly. 2/3rd is a gross overestimation.

Apparently, this child had leash marks on the neck. Awful. Some of these comments are truly disheartening. Hell truly is for children. I'm not surprised in the least that this happened in Georgia.

you can tell the child isnt being harmed, i can see the mom saying " if you dont stop i'll drag you out of here, young man!" right before the person got their phone out to record it.
