JetLev: Water-Powered Jet Pack Launched By Canadian Company (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/03/09 04:53 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:45 PM ET

It's not quite the jet pack we all dreamed as kids, but a Canadian company may have the next best thing. For a price of about $130,000 Jet Levitation will sell you a water-powered jet pack (of sorts) that can launch users 30 feet into the air.

The JetLev system's only catch is that it attaches to a jet ski motor -- and users are tethered by a 30-foot cable. The pack should be available this year.

Fox News recently ran a segment on the invention in which the editor of Discover magazine tried out the device. WATCH:

Not nearly as good as the Martin jet pack from New Zealand.

ROFLMAO! BOTH great responses!

I'm skeptical. There were no shots of the thing in the air more than 1 or 2 seconds. Some shots were about 1/10 of a second. Unveiling is probably premature. In any case, it has no appeal to me. I bet it's really, really noisy too.

Not bad, but will it fit into the trunk of an Aston Martin?
07:24 PM on 08/05/2009
Well that ought to get a few people killed every year.

$130,000? To only go 30 ft in the air and be connected to a teather? LAME.
10:42 PM on 08/05/2009
I suspect that's for the those that want it before it is put on the mass market.

Once it's available to everyone, I don't see it selling for more than $10,000, retail. I mean, look at the contraption; there's not that much there that would warrant more than $10,000!

I could do the same thing with an extreme meal of boiled beans, cheap beer and a
zippo lighter. And I wouldn't need any other equipment. Especially the tether.

Now why do I think that the next time we hear about this contraption it will be part of the 2009 Darwin Awards announcements????

Guys...it's a jet pack. Why are people only focused on the negative?

This story just confirms my opinion of Fox News and my suspicions about Discovery Magazine. First, the editor of the magazine says, “Since you’re not using fuel, you can keep going pretty much forever.†And then the gullible idiot Fox News interviewer lets this depiction of a perpetual motion machine go without even asking him to explain.

If you should happen to know someone who has more money than brains and is planning on getting one of these, NOW would be a really good time to start kissing up and try to get written into his will...
