After catching Orly's now infamous meltdown on MSNBC last night, I decided to do a little research to see if there was anyone out there who actually agrees with her. Turns out there is, and they all have webcams, aaaand I'm pretty sure one of them is my high school principal disguised as a Blues Brother. Now for the hard part: figuring out who's more insane, Orly "Birther Queen" Taitz, or a bunch of random wingnuts from the internet(s). You decide.

Watching the video, we see a colorful collection of North American fruitcakes in their natural habitat. These folks have always been out there (and boy are they "out there"), but I'm convinced we're seeing the consequences of a decade or so of fear-based political tactics. Character assassination is now accepted by a large enough percentage that accusations unacceptable a few years ago now get traction. It's not the actual wingnuts themselves that give this delusion "legs". It's a much larger group that would never shout it from the rooftops, but aren't offended by it because the "us-against-them" viewpoint has been reinforced again and again (witness the Sarah Palin campaign Town Hall meetings). For too many, healthy skepticism of politics has evolved into a reactionary suspicion that is in fact, real fear. These are the folks we see posting "Why doesn't he just settle this?"

Underlying this shift in political culture is the broader phenomenon of an information age that empowers irresponsible voices ("vocal minorities") using the "Fear Card", who then get the attention of those made vulnerable through their inability to research claims that cleverly distort technical or historical facts.
