Tissues

On Wednesday morning, the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, maker of Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle tissues, announced that it will adjust its production standards to increase forest conservation for its tissue products due to pressures from a five year Greenpeace campaign. This Greenpeace victory takes place only a few days after rallying Nike and Timberland to stop using leather from Amazon-bred cattle in an effort to curb deforestation.

Kimberly-Clark, the largest global tissue producer, which manufactures more than 4 million tons of tissues annually, had formerly used virgin fibers from Canadian boreal forests to produce the single-use tissue materials.

The Daily Green details Kimberly-Clark's greener mission.

Specifically, by the end of 2011, Kimberly-Clark will stop using any forest products derived from the Canadian boreal unless that wood is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and the company will ensure that 40% of its North American tissue fiber is either recycled or Forest Stewardship Council-certified, an increase of more than 70% over 2007 levels.

Thank you for this victory. It's small, but I'll take it!

Great. This means all my tissues will now come from sloppy-seconds forests?

What's next? Olive oil?

I know. I'm twisted.

We have lots of paper plants in New England and we have and excess of trees too.
recycled is good too we need a mix of supplys.
I noticed paper towel and tp prices stopped rising when recycled brands came on the market.

Recycled paper is actually less resource intensive that virgin. It takes much less energy to break down the fibers, and less chemicals to remove the lignins.

The only reason virgin paper competes is because tax payers subsidize the cutting down of trees on public lands, and economies of scale. Bass ackwards as usual.

Kimbelly Clatk has been using harvested trees from tree farms for years. They use a soft pine because the fibers are softer and make a better tissue.

Maybe the New Mexico summit help the cause, because it did not help the flat earthers.

This is great news. I talked to a lot of people about using virgin timber from Canada to wipe their butts with. I told them that this is 1 second of their lives every few hours and they were deforesting a beautiful country. You know what they told me? Crap like "I'm worth it." or "I can't stand the discomfort." 1 second of discomfort? Pity they were already over 45. I would have liked to have neutered the lot of them. I cannot believe people are that selfish or even care what they wipe their butts with. Not too long ago people used pages from the previous year's Sears catalogue.

I hope all TP and tissue manufacturers use only recycled materials for their TP and that they make it more comfortable for the pantywaists and entitled people who think that 1 second wipe is worth more than an ecosystem.

This is great news, however, KC on the whole is not much of a green paper company.

Their best selling commercial roll towel and toilet paper lines are made from 100% virgin fiber. I work in the industry... guys like Kimberly and Georgia Pacific are at the bottom of the list when it comes to being environmentally friendly. This is a shame... they each have a huge share in the away-from-home market.

There are some great companies out there like Baywest and SCA, who both have a large portion of their paper line certified by Green Seal and Eco Logo (the two leading certifying organizations in the industry). Both of whom manufacture facial tissue.

Slightly off subject here... I know, sorry. But... next time you're at work, tell your friendly maintenance person that you would like to see some 100% recycled paper in the public restrooms.

Anyway, this is a great step. Hopefully they will continue to make decisions like this when it comes to their entire paper product line!
