Glenn Beck's Obama "Racist" Comments Cost Him Advertisers

Huffington Post   First Posted: 9/6/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Glenn Beck

Fox News' Glenn Beck is feeling the consequences of his controversial comments on the July 28 episode of "Fox and Friends," when he said that Barack Obama was a "racist" who had a "deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

According to TVNewser, Beck advertisers Procter and Gamble, Lawyers.com and Progressive Insurance have all pulled their ads from Beck's 5PM ET show. This comes in the wake of groups like ColorOfChange.org's efforts to get companies to distance themselves from Beck.

Fox News told TVNewser that the advertisements were simply moved to other time slots on Fox News, and thus had no effect on the network's revenue (which, incidentally, was a bright spot in News Corp's otherwise dismal earnings).

Watch Beck's original comment's here.

What catches my attention is that Beck gives stats, gives names, actually gives information. Not his opinions. So what's so bad about that? Are you guys so stuck on having to be right about whatever team you picked taht you're back in high school rivalry mentally? How many of you have even watched Beck's show yourselves, rather than taken a 3rd hand accounting of it by a vested interest for the left? Are you afraid you might learn something that you don't want to confront ? I suggest you raise your willingness to take in ALL sides of any issue. Of course I only mean that for those capable of actual intelligence. :-) The rest of you can keep on doing monkey see monkey do from your teammates.

Before you repeat this comment again, do yourself a favor and COUNT the following: 1) number of times that your "heroe" had to admit that he was wrong as an invited guest to multiple TV programs (e.g. The View) 2) number of Republican heavies who have taken issue with his grotesque and absurd comments (e.g. Obama is a racist!) 3) The number of people hurt/murdered where his comments have been identified as primary reason (e.g. the shooting of 2/3 policemen in Pittsburgh

Don't you think that this type of background makes him "not too credible" when he vomits statistics, names, misspelled terms (e.g. olizsgarchy), etc?

But, in spite of that ... you say "actually gives information" . Wowwwwwwww !
I feel sorry for you, really.
You have been abused an I hope you take the time to re-deposit your faith in something worth of your time.

You have to love how HP buried this story because of the opposite intended effect it was having on Beck's ratings. The liberals have practically created a stimulus plan for Beck's ratings.

RE Beck averaging 2.4 million viewers each day, Is this so significant in a country of 300 million people?

Just asking, same goes for all the cable show ratings.
05:41 PM on 08/25/2009
With that logic why is MSNBC still in business:) Just asking:)
05:23 PM on 08/28/2009
It is significant when you figure half of that is a combination of druggies who could care less about themselves much less the country news or in prison or underage and not into tv yet or from other countries where they speak no English , etc. And the other half? Well let's admit it now, at least half of that half isn't involved in anything but their own immediate livlihood. So that leaves the 2.4 mill not too bad. Compared to other news stations, that's considered pretty damn good. Remember American Idol fans out ranked the president of the u.s.a to the point of the president having to order his time during those show airings. Does that tell you anything? LOL
11:58 PM on 08/24/2009
Character is something you find in the little things and our current President has failed in this. He disrespected the British by sending back the bust of Churchill, gave the Queen an IPOD with him on it and gave the Prime Minister some old movie DVD's. And you were embarressed by Bush? (I am speaking to the strong left) This man is a child and needs to discover something in himself other than himself. I pray he finds a love for his country like his wife did. She at least said she is proud of it now that her husband got elected. It's a start. Also, We Texans take the blame then go kick the butt of the one at fault in quiet and never let it happen again. I guess if you are from Chicago you blame everyone else. What a great leader. Great leaders rise above all others, say the hard things and do the impossible. Glenn Beck has risen from the ashes of his life above all others, he "says what he means and means what he says" and has touch Millions in a very positive way. Impossible you say? Exactly.

Wait it minute... I know it's late BUT, the bust was on LOAN. He sent it home. Obama likes Lincoln better. Lincoln's bust is there now. The Queen liked the IPOD. What did BUSH give for a gift to the Queen, bet you don't even know !
Next, "We Texans take the blame and the go kick the butt of the one at fault in quiet and never let it happen again." What? please explain what you are trying to say.
Finally, Yes, Glenn Beck has touched millions in a way that you might appreciate, but has touched MANY MILLIONS more in an highly offensive way and that's why the sponsors are leaving his show !
05:15 PM on 08/25/2009
1: You tone in what did Bush give the queen and that I don't even know implys two things,
1A, I am a stupid, conservative Texan and don't back up what I say and your obvious knowledge of the political world is far superior to mine as being a Obama Supporter you are extremely enlightened. 1B: Your typical knee jerk reaction to attack Bush and think I must be a supporter of his. Conservatives see this coming before you even throw it my dear. Try some different punches:) As you will see this one will not touch me:)
05:16 PM on 08/25/2009
Let me explain my statement about Texans kicking butt. We do. Enough said. But, let me put it this way. I have four boys in my home. I find a broken vase on the floor when I arrive from work and my 14 year old admits that he does not know who broke the vase but will accept responsibility for it as he was in charge of the household while I was away. My scorn will be directed at him but I am delighted by his honor in taking responsibility. He will then in turn find out who did it and between the three other boys at home handle this amonst themselves. Leadership is what this is called. Now, let me explain the Obama way. Let's say I am irresponsible and leave my 8 year old in charge of my 7 and 5 year old. As I believe we have with this current administration. I will return from work and find the same situation. My 8 year old will blame the 7 year old, the 7 year old will blame the 5 year old and the 5 year old will blame the dog named Bush:)

I am a Texan, American Soldier and Father of Four. It's sad to see this country go the way it is because of lazyness, moderation and an attitude to just get by. A man's word means nothing anymore. I've seen the enemy and he will not give you the mercy you so desire. His knife will slit the neck of liberal and conservative alike. I side with the conservatives because I would rather die a free man than be a slave to tryanny. Our president does not seem to have our best interests at heart. He is no different then most. I wish the mindless followers would ask questions about him but they are being lead to slaughter, happily I might add. I always questioned Bush and agreed with him about half the time. I am a Texan and the border needs to close. He wouldn't do that. He was fiscally irresponsible also. So is this President. Since you hated Bush so much for so many things please remember to also ask this man (Obama) why he is spending so much? Why he wouldn't wear the lapel pin or cross his heart during the National Anthem? Those still bother me. My 4 year old goes quiet when the flag is raise and crosses his heart without instruction. Why does a 44 year old man not show the same respect? Is he better than all those that died in the wars to defeat Communism, Maxism and Socialism? His ego is incredible.

I have always been against boycotts for political reasons however those on the left have chosen this as a tool to silence voices that they disagree with. As much as I disliked many commentators on the Voice of America I never once had an inclination to boycott or write to the advertisers voicing discontent.

It appears now that special interest groups have chosen to pressure corporations that advertise on programs that they disagree with. It this is now the chosen path then I will forgo my beliefs and do as well. This is a silly and pathetic game being played and there are no winners or losers. Until this nonsense is ended then I will stop doing business with those corporations that bow to this type of pressure so they may gain your business but will lose mine.

Glenn Beck is a reasonable person asking Important questions. I will be boycotting these companies as much as possible. What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH?????????????????????????

We cannot afford the goverment at the current size (look at the national debt and more importantly our unfunded libilities www.usdebtclock.org ) How can anyone in their right mind justify increasing the government into healthcare when we already are passing our current costs to future generations? These people are leaches with their high salaries and trust funds, they are only doing what most people would do in their positions, its human nature, take what you have and make it better, BUT WE ARE THE ONES PAYING FOR THIS, ALL OF US, OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

Everybody, including the hardcore Obama supporters all I am asking is that you please ask questions and do some research, I think it will paint a clear picture of where we are heading, and there is no easy way back once we arrive

Glenn Beck is right. Why is everyone attacking Glenn Beck for exposing Obamas egregious past and associations, yet refusing to see Obamas 20 year subscription to Wrights toxic sermons demonizing America, the white race and the Jewish nation and his subscription to Black Liberation Theology, which promotes racial segregation, black supremacy and even violence against the white race. So practicing racism all your life is not racist, but exposing it is? Remaining silent in cases like this and attacking those who raise their critical voice to question this behavior is unamerican.

My letter to all those Advertisers and ChangeofColor : My family and friends will no longer use your product / services because of your ill-convinced decision to boycott Glenn Beck. Your CEOs lack decisional capacity and manage with impaired judgement. So you mean to tell me, Obama's 20 yr subscription to wright's "god damn America" , "THE WHITE RACE IS ASBESTOS ", "WHITES MANUFACTURED THE AIDS VIRUS TO ANNIHILIATE BLACKS" and Obama's education in black liberation theology, which promotes racial segregation and black supremacy is NOT racist, BUT Glenn Beck criticizing Obama is racist?

Criticizing racism is NOT racism, DEFENDING RACISM IS RACISM.
As an American, Glenn beck has every right to criticize president Obama.

ALONG THE LINES OF, "YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT", you are what you accomplish in your lifetime. If all your lifetime achievements and accomplishments are bad or egregious stuff, then don't look for a favorable critique or assessment.

I think you vastly over exaggerate this reverend wright thing. No on really believes anything a preacher says. Talking snakes? Waters parting? Talking burning shrubbery? Please.
10:34 PM on 08/24/2009
Can someone tell me when the definition of "racist" changed? When someone can prove to me that Barack Obama denied anyone their basic human rights & their fundamental American rights solely because of the color of their skin, come & talk to me. When Obama allows black people to not allow white people to eat in restaurants, go to the schools of their choice, have equal opportunity for success in this country, come & see me. This desperate attempt to label any black person who speaks up against racial injustices a racist & to label OUR PRESIDENT a racist further strengthens my feelings that the Republican Party simply represents a group of mostly white people who want to instill fear & cause racial discord in an attempt to regain the White House. Fortunately for all the rest of us, the vast majority of white people know that people like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity are full of it, whether they like Obama or not. I don't know who these people think they're fooling. The thought of having a black President is driving them crazy & they're coming up with any & everything they can to make Obama's time in the White House as difficult as possible, & yet they have the audacity & unmitigated gall to call themselves patriotic.

I talked to an avid Beck listener today. She was livid after enrolling her kids in public school and being given the supply lists for both of her children. She is convinced that the required quantity of school supplies was inflated so that children whose parents cannot afford them will not do without. How dare they, the school system, (government) redistribute school supplies to disadvantaged children at her expense? She was going to do something about it, and one thing she could do immediately was purchase lower quality supplies at less quantity than was requested, (her words, not mine).

Did I mention that this woman and her husband own their own business and are quite comfortable? Comfortable enough to buy quite a few copies of Glenn Beck's most recent book, "Common Sense", so that they could pass them on as the author requested. Not comfortable enough, apparently, to enroll her kids in public school.

Fox may have moved it's A-level advertisers to other shows, but what that does is effect are the Rates that Fox can charge for Beck's time slot.
When those that are willing to pay top dollar for their ads stop advertising on Beck, FOX has to rely on those companies that won't or cannot afford A-level Rates to fill those time slots, thereby making Beck cost more than what his show brings in in ad revenue.
10:22 AM on 08/15/2009
Of course the advertisements were moved to other slots - they were pre-paid. But they displaced other advertisers in those slots. Have you noticed that Beck's advertisers last night were Egg Genie, Wonder-Hanger, and Final-Smoke - all low paying advertisers. No P&G, Progressive Insurance or GEICO in the bunch. They also had to run two public service ads and several Fox promos in place of paying ads.

So yes, this is hurting Beck and Fox no matter what they say.

Want to contact even Beck's new low-quality advertisers to tell them to stop enabling him?

Is this the place where liberals come to spew their putrid garbage? Great now I can get busy making all of you mad! I love it. Ok so basically I and thousands of others have already contacted GEICO, Radio Shack etc and written not only emails but also hand written letters to their corporate offices telling them that we will boycott them for taking their slots off of Glenn Beck. This works both ways you know. We are the majority in this country and you guys are the minority got it. Besides you know Glenn does have a radio show with about 7 million listeners! Are you people stupid or what? You honestly think that there are around 50 million Americans who listen to conservative talk radio that are just being brainwashed by Rush, Hannity, Levin etc? You guys are part of the problem and not part of the solution. If my heroes were Stephen Colbert and Jon Liebowitz or Jon Stewart as you like to call him, I would be a crying liberal also. They are both hacks who have nothing to lose because their job consist of making fun of anybody who does the news. Wow what a job!! You people will never win and just remember that WE total a very large number in this country so BRING IT ON!!!
10:15 AM on 08/15/2009
Well no, you aren't the majority. Have you forgotten the last two elections already? And you don't make us mad - you make us laugh.

Have anyone told Beck that Obama's mother is white???
08:49 PM on 08/14/2009
Or, that President Obama was raised by his white grandparents, with a grandfather who fought in World War II.

You are making the lonely assumption that Beck cares anything for facts or logic. I support you optimism and joy, but my cynical nature forces me to think he just plain doesn't give a darn about anything, and has the long-term memory capabilities of a fruit fly.
04:34 PM on 08/24/2009
he may have been raised here but he was borned in kenya,go to world news now and read the truth.hawaii issued a certificate of birth, which says a child was born and was registered to be living in that state. .a birthcertificate states you are a child born in that state.he should not be president cause he is not a natural born citizen like the constitution mandates.and if he listened to jeramiah wright for 20 years .and wasn't affected by it ?if you believe that then i got ocean front property in wv i will sell you.
glen beck wasn't the first person to say that, there was a dignitary from another country said the same thing.he obama is the beginning of the end of the usa as we were,if we don't wise up.you a web site that may open your eyes? savage nation .com enjoy

I am sorry I do not get it. Companies are advertising on a station that is airing at least one hate program. They are still advertising on a station airing a hate show. Please explain to me what progress was made here.
10:27 AM on 08/15/2009
The advertisements were moved because they were prepaid. They were replaced with low-paying ads, public service spots, and Fox promos. This DOES hurt Fox and Beck no matter how much they deny it.
