Baby Glutton: Controversial Doll Lets Little Girls Pretend To Breast-Feed (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/06/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:45 PM ET

Spanish toymaker Berjuan released a doll that allows children to "breast-feed." A child wears a special halter top with flowers instead of nipples that cause the baby to make sucking sounds and move its mouth. The tagline for the toy reads, "Because you shouldn't have to wait until you have breasts before you start breastfeeding your baby."

The concept doesn't bother me at all but it just doesn't translate to a toy. I mean, flowers for nipples? Am I the only one who thinks the halter is a little odd? Also, most kids just imitate this on their own. I know my daughter did (much to my husband's chagrin unfortunately). I guess stranger things have been patented and sold here in the U.S. We had Growing Up Skipper (off the shelves quickly but I had one) in the early 70's, whose breasts grew when you wound up her arm!!! There was also the Barbie with the dog that actually pooped when you pushed it's tail!!!! Now, if that isn't bizarre, then I don't know what is! Anyway, I digress. I was going to say that I don't see how this pushes kids to grow up too fast. I mean we have Bratz, Jonas Bros that little girls are oohing and ahhing over, Hannah Montana, Barbie, etc., etc. Now, those encourage growing up too fast. Breastfeeding, as opposed to bottle feeding a baby doll, ummm...don't get how that encourages a young child to want to have children any earlier.

This is funny and cute as heck. Listen, my SON was interviewed at a pre-school in Princeton - Miss Mason's - during which he yanked up his shirt and clapped a baby doll to his chest to feed "his baby". Well, I wish he'd had one of these outfits. Ms. Mason declined to accept him, so aghast was she.
Ease up, World. It's all good.

TOO CUTE! Sorry he didn't get into the school you wanted, but bravo at letting him have his innocent play. I'll share a cute story of my own: My son stuck all my sanitary napkins in the front room window one day. He thought they were "airplanes".

The United States has sexualized breasts beyond anything that makes sense. I guess we can thank the Victorians for that. Europeans like breasts but they are seen as just another body part as much as your hands, feet, eyes, etc.

The facts are:

1.) Humans are mammals.

2.) Children immitate adults.

3.) "Baby dolls" have existed since paleolithic times.

I guess we should just sweep millions of years of evolution under the rug, huh?

I must be living in bizarro world. Do we really need this for kids? How about toys that that develop their minds rather than their breasts?

Because girls shouldn't be taught to "think" they just need to learn from an early age that they are destined to be mothers and that's their role in this great society of ours.

We do still carry, deliver, and feed the children despite all other "progress".

Most girls ARE destined to be mothers. And not just in our society. Are you saying there is something wrong with that?
05:07 PM on 08/06/2009
I don't think this toy has anything to do with pre-pubescent girls developing breasts...that comes when they are biologically ready. If anything, this toy does exhibit the possibility of assisting young girls with coming to terms with their natural body functions that are about to manifest in their real lives...somewhat like toy guns get young boys ready to become soldiers...shouldn't we rethink toys like that instead of non-violent products like this one?

Exactly! People are more ok with their children playing violent video games than a toy that is about one of the most natural functions we could possibly do.

I'm sorry but I hope this doll never makes it to the US! Our children are so filled with "hurry up and grow up" these days that they don't have a chance to have a childhood. Little girls should be playing with their dolls as we always have, not imitating a grown woman's breastfeeding a baby. I'm fed up with training bras, etc. - the whole gamut of parents who think these things are "cute" and put their children in pre-preschools to get a jump on other kids. It's hard enough to grow up these days! GAD!

Little girls have been imitating breast feeding on their own for thousands of years. That is what children do.
04:29 PM on 08/06/2009
I'm getting one for my boyfriend!
04:30 PM on 08/06/2009
On second thought, maybe they could make a doll that teaches little boys how to perform cunnilingus properly. With a video and manual included.

Hey s/i/c/ko- Breast feeding isn't the least bit sexual. Only a per/ver/ted mind equates the two.

Just taking a stab here-

Perhaps what makes some uncomfortable with this is not so much anything to do with breasts or breast feeding. Perhaps it is just the idea of very young children doing (in this case pretending to do) things that we usually classify as "grown-up" things.

Seeing a six year old girl dressed up in high heels, primped hair and full make-up (Jonbenet style) is a bit creepy for many, because little girls are "just not supposed to look that way". Implying sexual maturity far before it happens generally makes people uncomfortable. Breast feeding is not in itself a sexual or erotic act (save for some who may have a fetish) but it is a behavior reserved for women of sexual maturity and reproductive age. Thus, some may put it into the "Jonbenet" category and feel uncomfortable. They should not purchase the doll.

Most children mimic "adult" behavior when they play. They pretend to drive toy cars, use telephones, perform surgeries, conduct sales transactions, etc. And we're usually okay with this, even though sometimes they're doing things at play that we hope they never experience in real life, such as shooting each other with guns.

I find it interesting that "G.I. Joe" toys don't get much attention, but this doll does. Perhaps we're afraid of the wrong things.

In a perfect world, I would have no problem with this...but with so many sickos out there, I think it’s a terrible idea.

I guess I don't get why the fact that there are sickos out there has anything to do with this. What do you mean by that?

When you watch any baby animal at play in the wild or your own puppy or kitten, everything they play at is to hone skills they will need when they are full grown. In other words, playing can and should also encourage responsibility in adulthood. I think this toy fits that description.

That's just a shame. I remember back in 1989 when my son was a baby visiting some relatives who were just taken aback that I nursed him. They treated me like I was molesting the boy...
