Brad Miller Death Threat: Capitol Police Looking Into Phone Call Made To Congressman Over Health Care Reform

DINA CAPPIELLO   08/ 8/09 12:19 AM ET   AP

Aig Outrage

WASHINGTON — A North Carolina congressman who supports an overhaul of the health care system had his life threatened by a caller upset that he was not holding a public forum on the proposal, his office said Friday.

Democratic Rep. Brad Miller received the call Monday, one of hundreds the congressman's office has fielded demanding town-hall meetings on the health care proposal, said his spokeswoman, LuAnn Canipe. She said the callers were "trying to instigate town halls so they can show up and disrupt."

"We had one of those kind of calls that escalated to what we considered a threat" on the congressman's life, said Canipe. "These are some strong-arm tactics, and we are trying to deal with and trying to talk to people in good faith about health care reform."

Democratic lawmakers expected protests and demonstrations as they headed back to their states and districts over the August recess to sell health care reform legislation. Earlier this week, White House officials counseled Democratic senators on coping with disruptions at public events this summer.

In the week since the House began its break, several town-hall meetings have already been disrupted by noisy demonstrators.

The latest occurrence was at back-to-back town hall meetings held by Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., which got so raucous police had to escort people out.

Dingell vowed Friday to push ahead with Democratic-led efforts to extend coverage to all, saying he won't be intimidated by protesters.

"I am eager to talk about the bill with anyone who wants to discuss it. That doesn't open the door to everyone who wants to demagogue the discussion," Dingell said in a statement.

The boos, jeers and shouts of "Shame on you!" at the events in a gym in Romulus, Mich., mirror what other Democrats are encountering around the country. Activists have shown up at town-hall meetings held recently by Arlen Specter, D-Pa. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was greeted by about 200 protesters at an event in Denver, about half supporting Democrats and half opposed.

In Saratoga Springs, N.Y., about 20 protesters showed up at an event held by Democratic Rep. Scott Murphy to let him know they oppose the health care plans in Washington. They carried signs saying: "Obamacare Seniors beware! Rationing is here," and "If socialized medicine is best ... why didn't Ted Kennedy go to Canada?"

The episodes have drawn widespread media attention, and Republicans have seized on them as well as polls showing a decline in support for President Barack Obama and his agenda as evidence that public support is lacking for his signature legislation.

Pushing back, Democrats have accused Republicans of sanctioning mob tactics, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused protesters earlier this week of trying to sabotage the democratic process.

Miller never had plans to hold a town-hall meeting during the August recess, Canipe said. Instead, he was sitting down with smaller groups of people to discuss the plan. During one of those smaller gatherings on Friday, hundreds of people from a group called Triangle Conservatives peacefully protested at Miller's Raleigh office.

The threatening caller, when told by a staffer that Miller was not planning a meeting, claimed the congressman didn't want to meet with people face to face because he knew it would cost him his life, according to Canipe. The staffer then asked if the caller was making a threat. The caller, said Canipe, replied that there are a lot of angry people out there.

The U.S. Capitol Police confirmed Friday they were looking into a threat against a congressman, but wouldn't provide further details.

Think about "socialized medicine" for a moment: A pool of people who are mostly healthy paying for the few who are sick, at any one given time. Who controls purse strings of the pool, which middle man cares for the bank? The choices are either a for-profit insurance company or representatives of the people doing it for cost. Personally, I like the second option. Next we should threaten big oil with the same scenario.

It's a huge disappointment to see the media ignore outright falsehoods such as the rumor about euthanasia. Many times now I have seen this ridiculous idea stated in interviews or call in shows and even by representatives and senators, and the host or news "journalist" simply ignores it, and makes no attempt to actually report the truth about any of the proposed healthcare reforms. By not confronting the lie they are tacitly accepting it as true.

"By not confronting the lie they are tacitly accepting it as true."

You are accurately describing the phenomenon I've seen at work in America. Do and say nothing, people tend to believe an unopposed idea. But confront a twisted truth with dignity, reason, and facts, people might continue to believe their friends at first but, after a time, the truth makes them think and sets them free. It reminds me of this famous quote:

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Any individual against socialized medicine should be forced to collect and return the Social Security and medicare cards belonging to any member of their family no matter how far removed.

ALL THOSE OPPOSED TO GOVERNMENT RUN PROGRAMS TURN IN YOUR SS AND MEDICARE CARDS, NOW!

They should also protest the military, the police, and firefighters as well as the roads that they use to get to these townhalls
01:15 AM on 08/09/2009
and send all their mail by FedEx
03:17 AM on 08/09/2009
Yes, indeed, their "socialism" also includes Medicare and veterans' health insurance, the military services , the police services, and firefighter services as well as the roads that are used to get to town halls.

Let them buy their own damn PRIVATIZED SERVICES, roads and PRIVATIZED, PROFITEERING town halls!

They should use only bottled water and rent scuba gear to breathe. Oh, by the way, most of the medicines they take were developed by socialized research before big Pharma got their hands on them. Should they opt out of taking medications also? Yep.

These Democratic Congressmen and women who are holding strong against the threats and violence are earning greater respect from me every day. And their office staff, which probably is fielding an avalanche of e-mails, phone calls and letters have my sympathy as well as my respect.

THIS is why we refer to them as reTHUGS. They hate democracy. They want our president to fail. This is domestic terrorism.

The GOP are the rich leading the stupid. It's a shame. They spent the past eight years wrecking our country, and now they want to finish it off.

"If socialized medicine is best ... why didn't Ted Kennedy go to Canada?"

Duh. How bright is this? If an American DID need care in Canada, they would ask for his insurance card.

I know. I was there when it has happened.
11:23 PM on 08/08/2009
I have one of those cards but we in Canada have never referred ti it as an Insurance card. This card is presented at hospitals, doctors visits or when MRI and other tests are taken. These cards are swiped just as a Visa card and verifies that this person has received treatment at these places. We do not have to fill out any forms as all this is done at the time we apply for the card. This is not free but is covered by taxes. It is a careless and thoughtless statement to make that Ted Kennedy should have come to Canada. But he would have received excellent care. As a Canadian I am proud of the fact that we care for all Canadians in this way.

I am grateful when those of you from Canada post your most logical messages. Of course you know that one of the RWing lies is about how horrible it would be if we had a health care system like Canada. I assure you, if it were warmer in Canada more of us would be there enjoying your health care.

Besides, Ted Kennedy already has a form of socialized medicine in his government health insurance plan. And it's a darned good plan. Wish I could afford one like that.

My advice to reps holding town halls: Schedule them during restaurant early bird specials - that'll keep the old wingnuts away.

Pet insurance is cheap and hassle-free. My five rescues(three cats and two dogs) are covered by
a company called PetPlan. Once an animal is insured, it cannot be dropped because of a condition
that has occurred while it was covered. Cats average $300/year for diagnostic workups, medications,
medical conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and orthopedic issues, surgeries and emergency treatments. Deductibles can be 0, $50, $100 or $200 with maximum coverage of up to $20,000. Dogs average $400-$600 annually depending on age and breedf or the same health coverage. A few years ago, my Greyhound went into liver failure from eating wild mushrooms in the woods. A 2-week hospitalization cost $2200 and I received $1700+ back. (Greyhound is fine and pushing 13 years).
How ironic that it is easier and less stressful to insure our pets than it is to insure our people.
08:04 PM on 08/08/2009
I have the same pet insurance and its been well worth it for my dogs. We loose coverage for our son next year at age 22. Plans should cover all kids until after college at a minimum.
08:17 PM on 08/08/2009
Defeat healthcare insurance and I am sure that pet insurance will be the next money maker for the greedy insurance companies.

Seemed to work according to her staff.

What a great idea. And this way anyone wanting to speak had to actually face someone across a table. Once you pull away the shouting and the anonymity . . . well, you then have to "stand" on the courage of your OWN convictions.
12:06 AM on 08/09/2009
Great Idea???
If there were hundreds of people who want to know about it, should she spend hundreds of hours on it - rather than ONE or TWO meetings of a couple hours where everyone gets their questions answered together and can hear other questions maybe they didn't think of?
It's ridiculous and cowardly and her supporters should be on hand to defend their elected official by simply being present.

When listening to the insurance company executive, Wendell Potter, it is clear that all the health insurance industry executives care about is their stock price. Could we mobilize a dis-investment campaign similar to the one that was used to get South Africa to reform Apartheid?

Big institutional investors, such as colleges, were swayed by protests against investing in South African businesses.

Could it work again?
