I think he raised the bar way high for what is considered a good teen movie. Unlike so many of the flicks made today, his movies were works of art, enjoyable by teens and adults alike, and have a lasting appeal.

Yes, as a kid, loved his films in portraying teenage angst, yet I do agree with others about limited and sometimes racist portrayals of people of color (i.e. Sixteen Candle). But hey, he was writing about only people and experiences he knew, right?

There are many of his films I enjoy (except for the one mentioned above), but one stands in my mind: Career Opportunities. Introduced us to Frank Whaley (wonderful actor and now director) and Jennifer Connelly. You guys may talk about her bod--, uh, er, beauty, but out of all the up-and-coming actors/actresses that John Hughes gave breaks to, she's the only one who went on to won an Oscar ("A Beautiful Mind')!

I mourn the passing of a talented and funny filmmaker.

First off, very sorry to hear of his untimely death, But I never liked his films. Schlocky scripts were the problem. Not quite as bad as Ephron's, though.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles. No matter how many times I watch it, I still cry at the end. And still laugh at the Steve Martin and John Candy moments! Great holiday movie or any time I feel the need to appreciate what I have. RIP John Hughes!

OMG! I didn't know Hughes directed National Lampoon's Vacation. Forget everything I just said about Ferris Bueller and Home Alone. Vacation is by far his best film!!!

Vacation was simply fantastic, but Uncle Buck was even better. Gosh I had no idea how many hits this man wrote and directed. Great movies. Thank you so much John Hughs for all the laughs.

I liked his movies as a child. When I became an adult, I realized black people don't exist in his movie world. Kinda like learning Santa doesn't exist. My 2 cents worth.

As a black human being and aspiring actor, unfortunately we are are often unwittingly relegated to that role. Regardless of the social change in society. My 2 cents.

Well if your going for realism, then that the way it is. Many of his movies are set in the northshore suburbs of Chicago.

Good point. However, his movies were not overtly racist, and I have noticed young people of color watching his movies, over and over, loving the stories. Still, it does seem that he was incapable of portraying the world as anything other than strictly homogenous, and that makes me sad.

Ferris Bueller was the best. But after a while I began to resent the fact that people of color like me didn't exist in Mr. Hughes' world. Oh, there was one insulting 2-dimensional speaking part of the Asian student in Sixteen Candles. By time Home Alone came along, I was done with the lily-white Hughes world.

And I think that's the entire reason that I never cared for Ferris Bueller as much as other people - I never could relate to the guy and I didn't envy him. He just annoyed me. Not being the same color as his characters never bugged me, I could easily relate to most of his characters. Skin color is too arbitrary for me to form an identifiable relationship with anyone let alone a movie character.

I'm going to have to differ with you on Ferris Bueller. The Ferris character was a mighty cool cat. When a popular director can make a long career of reflecting what he thinks is contemporary society without one character of color - it gives an unmistakable impression that that person don't even acknowledge your existence. Admittedly, Mr. Hughes grew up in a Chicago suburb and had little to do with people other than White (in the 60's).

I don't think he was maliciously omitting us, but it is obvious he was intellectually incurious about other Americans as he went out in the world. So, it goes deeper than the arbitrariness of skin color - a prolific cinematic career devoid of characters of color reflected his narrow scope of humanity. It wasn't arbitrary, it was consistent.
