Miley Cyrus performed her new song 'Party in the USA' at Sunday night's Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

The awards air Monday night, but thanks to an intrepid audience member who filmed the show, there is video of her pole dancing performance from atop an ice cream cart.

I think that labeling this as a "pole dance" is an exaggeration and an attempt at getting people more worked up then they really should be. Yes, I agree that what she was wearing wasn't really age appropriate, but in the same hand, I understand that I am beyond my teenage years and not living in a hollywood world where every move and action is scrutinized and planned as a career move.

I see this a possible act of transition. Miley moving from child star to a star in her own right. I don't expect to her to have the same values/morals/ethics/etc as her father as she is not him. If people place her in the same light as her father, eventually they are going to be disappointed.

Yes, Miley is a role model for young girls. But if Miley is being a bigger female role model than the mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmas out there, we have bigger problems on our hands. I doubt the actions of one celebrity can seriously unbalance a person, no matter the age, unless there was something wrong with them already.

I don't see what the big deal is. She just squatted NEAR the poll, and it was being used for support anyway while they were pushing her around the stage. I do admit her outfit was a little inappropriate but when you look at Miley/Hannah fans what do you see? Them wearing jeans with a t-shirt with her face or name on it. That's not so bad.

Kids that like Miley Cyrus watch the Hannah Montana show and beg you to buy them the toys and clothes they see in Wal-Mart with her on it. They go on Disney's website to look for Hannah Montana stuff or play the games. They sing her songs and dance the dances to Hoedown Throwdown or Ice Cream Freeze.

The truth is we wouldn't hear about half of this Vanity Fair stuff or how she was 'poll dancing' if people didn't make a big deal about it. The way fans see her, she really is a good role-model, but everyone makes it so hard by continuing to point out the bad things in her that we aren't seeing. We're looking at the messages in her songs and what she says. She tells us to go for our dreams and to be ourselves. Not to wear short shorts and go ga-ga over the Jonas Brothers.

Miley Cyrus USED to be my best, most favourited celebrity ever because she was always a good girl and she was always pretty and nice! But now at the teen choice awards i felt so disapointed when i saw her pole dancing (what a good (awful) role model) I know the song was 'Party in the U.S.A' but to dress like that and pole dance in front of kids possibly 8-9 would probably think it is right but it isn't it's wrong! I loved Miley untill she showed her bra on the internet took photos of herself and her boyfriend her pole dancing, nose ring!...just went to far! If she is just trying to impress people or boys then seriously...grow up! Disapointed! I had no idea that Miley could sink that low! And to think she was my role model!

The greater mojarity of people commenting this are seriously repressed and pathetic. Even some of the jounalists writing about this. The girl didn't dance on this pole. She bent down once. Wow, incredible!

You're all haters.

We are not repressed and pathetic we just know what is right and wrong! She did sing a really good song but she spoiled it by how she dressed and danced! Please face reality look at the past...Photos of HERSELF and her old boyfriend. Seriously i think i should know i USED to be her Biggest fan I loved her but i guess people change! I have witnessed alot of 16 year olds on there way to a party and they dont do half the bad stuff that miley does, even when drunk! So dont use the excuse 'she is just a teenager'.

you know what? it doesnt matter what miley cyrus is doing because whether girls that age saw this or not they would still be wearing shorts that reveal their butt! and personally i think she is a good role model for teens because she has a good head on her shoulders and she encourages kids to follow their dreams.have none of you heard of her purity ring? yea thats really a porn star in the making isn't it? all i've got to say is ...the only reason the pole was there was because she would have fallen off when they were moving it around.i still don't see what the big deal is.and u know whats sad is this wouldnt be that big of a deal if paris hilton did it because we would already expect it from her.MY POINT EXACTLY:we wouldnt expect this from miley so thats why everyone reacted from it! so obviously she is doing something right.i just can't stand people that having nothing else to do with their lives than watch celebritys make little mistakes and then act like its a huge catastrophe!!!

The real debate here has been subtly over-looked: As far as the dance featured in this video being "provocative" goes, I'd have to say it wasn't all that bad. All she did was crouch beside the pole, which was there so she didn't fall over as they moved the cart to different positions- this action, I believe, would have been taken completely differently if she were in, say, jeans, as opposed to the very short shorts.

HOWEVER, Miley's case is different than a normal 16 year-old; she is supposed to be an icon for children everywhere, and made a wrong decision when she chose to wear that to a kids award show. Personally, I think allowing your child to look up to Miley is like letting a little girl look up to Kim Kardashian, who has a porno under her belt, because honestly, that's the road Miley's headed to. It's up to you as a parent to monitor what your child watches..

So, in closing, make yourself aware as a parent. If you've been around the internet for the past year or so, you know that Miley has practically nude photo's floating around out there, that can be easily stumbled upon just by typing in her name- that means any internet-using child could find them. Not only that, but knowing this, do you really feel comfortable knowing your child is looking up to and learning from this person? I wouldn't.

I read these comments and begin to think there are a lot of repressed preachers on the loose that think everyone should think the way they do. Can't you people watch some dancing and listen to the music without being critical of the performers. It's not just Miley Cyrus it's all the current entertainers. Get off your holier than thou attitudes. You should be the role model for your kids. Don't be critical of their music, let them enjoy it while they are young and can. Lead by example. Go with them when they go shopping for clothers, complement them when the try on something age appropriate that looks pretty. Don't alienage them with self righteous attitudes. Have you forgotten the contorversy about Elvis Presley in the late 50's and early 60's?

Wow amazing! I wonder what she'll do next year A lap dance maybe???

And what the hells with the little short leather shorts! Who was thinking, "Oh yeah this is the perfect example for 12 and 13 year old girls every were!" And same goes for her parents.

Just leave the poor girl alone. She did nothing wrong. Find something better to do with your time then putting down a poor 16 year old girl who does not deserve it. Let all focus on some real issues.

Listen...

This girl is still a teenager and has a few more teen years to go... She struts around in little tiny outfits, her dances are indeed getting more provocative you CAN'T argue with that... This is not classy behavior at all for a girl her age... especially when her target market is VERY YOUNG girls who don't know any better and will want to grow up way faster than they have to... She MAKES herself out to be a target for ppl to talk down on..she has to put some clothes on, chill out for with the sexy dancing for a little while (which she can't even do yet..practically all young teen girls are awkward and can't move sexy yet..anyone who says this girl is sexy and dances sexy should be put in jail) All's I'm saying is look at the difference between the way Christina Aguilera, Brittney Spears, and Jessica Simpson grew and changed their was of ENTERTAINING as they got older...Patience is a virtue Miley...

Here is my dilemma as a mother. Do I lecture my daughter on something as insignificant as this piece of news or do I explain to her why her dad is not home? While you parents worry about the horrible effects that this girl could have on your kids, I worry about what the horrible effects of losing her father could do to mine. For those of you who have no interest in real news...the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is still strong as ever. Thousands of children are losing their dads as well as thier moms to real danger. You will have to excuse me as a mother of a 5 year old that if she wants to watch Hannah Montana, I'm going to let her. She wants the clothes, I'm going to buy them for her. If that stupid show can elicit a laugh out of my daughter, I'm going to allow it. It's the sweetest sound you can possibly hear when your world is turned upside down. Who knows what tomorrow may bring for her; could bring quite possibly the biggest heartache she may ever know. I see nothing to get that upset about with this video. But I'm sure that stems from the fact I have real problems facing my daughter to worry about.

I fully understand that having her father deployed at war is a bigger issue than who your daughter has as her role models, but the fact that you are the only adult there right now makes the need for proper role models even stronger. Letting your daughter learn that dessing like a slut at 13 or 14 is ok is a 'real problem'. You may not see it now, but continue this way of parenting and you'll see it when it's too late.

Your daughter gets a laugh from Hannah Montana because its 'cool' and all of her friends like it. Teach her some values and provide her with some culture and she'll spend her time playing makebelieve and reading.

The fact that you don't think this video is 'any big deal' is proof of my other comments. Best of luck and may God watch over your husband

Everyone needs humor. There are many choices that are appropriate- including Hannah Montana. However, Miley is NOT Hannah. Obviously Miley is crossing over to mainstream radio and taking her personal image with it. I think as a parent it is important to keep things age appropriate. I think children need to have a childhood and not be permitted to become young adults prematurely. ESPECIALLY when the real world IS heartbreaking.

I don't think the dance was inappropriate but what she is wearing most definitely is. People today wonder why young teenage girls want to dress like strippers and sluts. The thanks for that desire goes to girls like Miley Cyrus. She is 16 and dresses like she belongs on a street corner or a strip club. The dance would have been even less offensive if she had had more clothes on. PLEASE MILEY, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!!!!

well i guess after you wanted to find something to whine about and the dance didn't provide anything of interest you now settle on the clothees.

i bet if you went on up to tennessee you would find many "girls" wearing the same dixie dukes.

it's gotta be something doesn't it.

I watch this video and I cannot see where there is a problem. Miley more or less just stood by the pole holding onto it with one hand. People needs to let Miley be the person that she is and quit making judgments against her. I really believe that the people that makes bad comments about Miley is just jealous of her fame. Miley just be true to yourself and be the person that you can live with.
