'That's Gay' Host Goes Undercover To Investigate Gay Characters In TV Ads (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/10/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:50 PM ET

This week on Current TV's "Infomania," Bryan Safi, arbiter of all things gay, took on the advertising world. In an in-depth and surprising piece he showed his viewers first how homosexuality is used as a punchline in ads, next how it's used subtly in mainstream ads to entice gays without freaking out the heteros, and lastly how ads are recut for the straight and gay worlds so as not to offend.

On another note, Bryan Safi is welcome to come over to my house and get all hot under the collar for me in private. He's dreamy.

Oh I noticed it in the Progressive ad and I saw the yogurt with the "honey" in it as well. I didn't think anything of it I wouldn't care if I saw gays in commercials. they buy stuff too!

About the gay yogert ad, the first version actually did air on prime time network television (not sure whitch one). However, I guess after a few people complained, it was taken off the air and edited so the word "honey" is not heard.

I had noticed the HRC logo in that Orbitz.com ad, but I didn't catch the pride flags in any of those other commercials. I guess this is sort of, maybe, kind of Progress... right?

same here....now I am going to obsessed looking for clues in every ad...actually kind of fun like a Highlights magazine at the dentist with the two similar pics looking for differences.

Now I'm going to pay close attention to ALL commercials. This was very interesting. Thank you HP for this story!

Hilarious.
And for those digging for a punchline, there isn't one. It's just funny, try and enjoy life without trying so hard.

Funny stuff.

Shows to go...I didn't even see any of those hints he pointed out. Guess my brain's just wired differently. I love the puppets though...I've seen both versions and I just thought they were cute. It didn't even register which way they were skewed. I don't care!

The most interesting thing to me is the orbitz ad and the surfboard thing... the subtle stuff that is never mentioned.

I agree. It's helping ignorant Americans subliminally become more accepting.
