Health Care

Now that President Obama has given his major address to Congress, health care reform seems close at hand. But its been a long, contentious road to changing our nation’s health care system.

Legislators returning home over the summer hosted health care town halls in order to answer questions and disseminate information about reform, but these meetings became platforms for reform opponents. Anti-reform protesters disrupted meetings with yelling, shouting and jeering -- preventing speakers from answering legitimate questions (VIDEO Roundup of town hall disruptions).

The Huffington Post relied on citizens' on-the-ground coverage of the health care town hall meetings. Readers submitted video, photos and writeups of the events they attended, helping break news across the country.

We’ve collected some of the best town hall reports below, and also created an interactive map showing where Huffpo’s citizen journalists reported from. Check it out—its been quite a summer (click on a thumbtack for a link to the corresponding story).

@demkgge---there were many pro-health reform supporters at the Boucher Town Hall, many with signs. Of the 1200 who attended, there were about 200-400 both pro and anti health care reform. The rest were there to talk about their health insurance or health care problems or like me, there to observe. So, it was only that the anit-reform folks were so loud and rude that someone might think there were more of them. I wrote about it in an article but HP didn't publish it unfortunately.

I noticed there were no comments from Kansas on the HP map so I'll add abit about my Rep. Lynn Jenkins, who said to her audience in Hiawatha, "great white hope" was coming from the Republican party. Jenkins represents a number of Native American tribes in her district and she was speaking at the time, if not on reservation ground, very close to one (I'm not sure of the boundaries around Hiawatha). When I've been apart of her townhall meetings and asked about HR 676, she's shut me off. Sen. Brownback and Roberts are the same. The one Democratic rep. from Kansas City is a blue dog. All other representatives from KS are Republicans who not only belong to the "Family" (like Brownback) but also receive money from the insurance companies along with their buddies Jenkins, Brownback, and Roberts. The only voices talking about HR 676 and/or alternative options are in the pages of our newspaper from the capital: Topeka Capital-Journal. The best voice is from Dr. Bill Roy,/OBGYN (he was my doctor until he retired and a terrific doctor!) who has a regular column, the other voices are from the editorials.

What do you do when your representatives don't care what you think?

Peace

First, keep writing. Wear them out. Next, work hard to elect someone who will listen. I realize there is a small chance in Kansas of speedy change but hopefully your dedication will give like-minded voters hope. I live in Georgia and am unrepresented as well. I stay up on the issues and write and call often. I debate them when they will engage.
Anything less is admitting our democracy is finished and I'm not ready to do that.
Good luck. You are not alone!

Not one photo showing pro-healthcare reform people at the townhalls! HP is a part of the problem--giving the anti-reform people coverage while leaving out photos of those who support healthcare reform is misleading.

The town hall I went to in Dublin, Virginia and sent a article about was not published. Was it because I spoke the truth about it and did not sensationalize it with photos of anti-reform folks and their signs?

By the way, that photo of the guy with the "Don't tread on me" flag---that flag was also there in Dublin. It's obvious the protests are not grass-roots but organized.

Problem is, JoanVA, there aren't many pro-healthcare reform people showing up. I attended a Tea Party "town hall" last night in Bucks County PA. I learned about the event through the Obama website. There were two pro-reform signs being held up by two teenagers. They were sitting ducks. The speakers were preaching to the converted. But it would have been good see a better pro-reform turnout. PATHETIC!

Often it is said “we are a Christian nation.” But we have members scream at a person in a wheel chair while discussing her plight with health care. We have members who shouted at a young mother telling of her experience in seeking medical care for her young child. Only a year ago, in the heat of the political season, we heard a member scream “An inadequate black man.”
The same type of “Christian” behavior of shouting and threatening, moments captured on film, of Greyhound bus stations with waiting mobs, carrying chains and 2 by 4, as signs of intimidation against those who advocated ending the "Color only" and "White only" with items such as water drinking fountains and lunch room counters. Other moments capture on film of adults who were shouting and threatening school age children as their entered the schools or rode on the buses to schools in Boston during the 1970's.

This is a moment for great men and women, a moment that calls for moral clarity and fortitude in character. To heed the understanding that the "Stone Age didn't end because we ran out of stone" people gather the strength to move in a different direction, people ushered a new way of looking at life itself.

All this c**p about socialism is dumb. Consider this:
If you take out a student loan, you might be a socialist.
If you finance a home through FHA or VA, you might be a socialist.
If you are on social security, you might be a socialist.
If you get medicare, you might be a socialist.
If you drive on an interstate, you might be a socialist.
If you work for the gov and have a gov sponsored health care plan, you might be a socialist.
And on and on and on. Don't people have brains or has the media taken it away?

It would help if we would let everyone know about events so they can attend and be heard. I signed up with

http://www.marchforhealthcare.com/events

They sent me an email about a town hall in my area scheduled today. I had no idea it was happening. So, sign up. There is also a list of cities that will host the march for health care reform on the September 13th. Be there.

I went to a town hall meeting in La Grande, OR with Senator Ron Wyden presiding. The meeting had a lot of security involved and was mostly question/answer. We were given tickets and names were drawn to ask questions of the senator. Most of the questions were directed at the economy and the amount of money being spent in Washington. We democrats were clearly outnumbered in this town hall meeting as were our votes in the last election. The meeting was calm and Senator Wyden answered all of the questions, even the crazy ones. I was hoping more people would ask questions about healthcare, but those who's tickets were chosen asked other questions. There were no signs, and no people shouting disgusting verbages toward the senator. I didn't get to ask my question. I wanted the senator to define 'affordable' when it comes to the cost of healthcare. I wanted him to tell me what percentage of one's paycheck should go towards health insurance.

This clip is NOT straight reporting so it doesn't meet Huffington Post's Eyes and Ears standards for unbiased coverage. It is very biased, it is a very opinionated and sarcastic look at the Republican side of the health care debate.
It's also a bit on the slapdash side and thrown together in a hurry:

Making up excuses for going all out socialism is just st0pid. But it does make a good point about how it started way back and look what it's leading to. Total socialism and total government control over everything. It stops here and it stops NOW!

What are you talking about?
What is your real concern?
Is it that people you think do not deserve it might get something for nothing (healthcare)?

A few things for these people to remember:
1) Medicare is "s.oci.alized" healthcare for the elderly
2) Ab.or.tions are covered under most heal.th in.sura.nce policies
3) Their local police dept, fire dept, post office, public school system and parks are run by "so.cial.ized" govt programs.

I just don't understand the disconnect with some of these pple.

It only proves how a small irrational minority can, thanks to the media, appear to be a national movement.
