THe list is OK- kids can read a lot more if you let them.

Notably missing was The Little Prince....I still read that. It's pure genius.

Wow - Life of Pi is not really a kids book. Good for Malia!! Her reading level must be quite advanced for her age.

Adults often underestimate kids' ability to understand stories read to them. They'll listen to, enjoy and understand any good story, and it doesn't need to be reduced to a vocabulary of 100 words for them to follow it.

To all those who say "who cares " : Reading at least a few of the books the people who are very successful will help everyone in the USA.

Soon China and India will graduate more kids with a Genius IQ each year than the USA has students total.

So if your not preaching reading to kids and young people you might as well be a Fox Network Program dumbing them down.

Here's the list, your local library can probably provide most of the books for your wonderful daughters.

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel
The White House confirmed that Michelle and her daughter Malia were reading this story that begins with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, a tiger and one little boy.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst
Everyone has bad days…even when they're in the third grade.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.
One news report said Michelle seemed to know the words to this animal story by heart, meowing and barking along with her attentive audience at a community health organization in Washington, D.C.

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss' classic tale of the cat that turned a dull, rainy day into a magical adventure is a go-to for any parent—and the first lady is no exception.

Olivia by Ian Falconer
Olivia is a pig of all trades: She has saved a circus, rocked out in a band and even pioneered an intense "Santa watch." However, the series all began with this simple day-in-the-life look at the unforgettable porcine heroine.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
This wild adventure story about a boy named Max and his imaginative journey seems to be a hit with all the Obamas.

I think that is great that our First Lady Michelle is reading books to children as they should learn to read. I am sure the Obama girls read alot when they are in the White House.

actually, I care. as a mother, grandmother, and aunt, I've always been interested in quality children's books. it's important that children be exposed to good literature at whatever reading level they are - and to be read to from literate sources.

Michelle's list includes old favorites and new offerings, all of which would enrich a child's life, and provide alternatives to passively watching tv.

Obviously you do since you cared enough to both read and comment.
