Though the Obama Administration has warned that unemployment will reach 10 percent this year, job markets across the country may not be uniformly bad. According to a new report by the search engine Indeed, the best city to find a job is Washington, D.C., where there are six job postings for every unemployed person. Before you get too excited, Washington, D.C. and Jacksonville, Florida are the only cities on the list in which job postings actually outnumber the unemployed.

The list ranks the 50 most populous U.S. cities by the ratio of job postings to unemployed citizens. Here's the rest of the top 10 - and each city's respective ratio:

1. Washington, DC (6:1)
2. Jacksonville, FL (3:1)
3. Baltimore, MD (1:1)
4. Salt Lake City, UT (1:2)
5. New York, NY (1:2)
6. San Jose, CA (1:2)
7. Hartford, CT (1:2)
8. Oklahoma City, OK (1:3)
9. Austin, TX (1:3)
10. Boston, MA (1:3)

As you might imagine, Detroit is the lowest ranked city, with 18 unemployed people per each job posting. Also near the bottom are Miami, Florida and the foreclosure-ravaged Riverside, California, which have job posting-to-unemployed ratios of 1:9 and 1:10 respectively. It's also more than a little worrisome that enormous cities like Chicago and Los Angeles rank near the bottom of the list.

Here's the rest of the bottom ten cities:

41. Buffalo, NY (1:6)
42. Orlando, FL (1:6)
43. Sacramento, CA (1:6)
44. Rochester, NY (1:6)
45. Chicago, IL (1:7)
46. Portland, OR (1:7)
47. Los Angeles, CA (1:8)
48. Riverside, CA (1:9)
49. Miami, FL (1:10)
50. Detroit, MI (1:18)

I live in DC. The economy is still good here. Some retailers are having trouble and the housing market is weak, but employment is the best in the country because of government and all the corporate headquarters based here (well, N Virginia). Housing will probably begin to rebound soon here as inventories are low.

Who needs a job when the government is so willing to help us.

If you don't have a job, you can get welfare, food stamps, rent assistance, heat assistance, college assistance and on and on and on.
Or is that just if you are a single female with a gaggle of children.

I'm detecting the sarcasm, but are you serious? Have you ever spent one day needing or trying to get assistance? It ain't easy, it ain't funny, and it sure doesn't increase anyone's standard of living.

Living in Jacksonville, 3:1, I want to know how many of the jobs are "Legit" Having combed daily indeed.com, hotjobs.com, careerbuilders.com, beyond.com, work source of florida. and the postings of craigslist, oodle, kijiji, and the likes.
There may be postings, but what percentage are spammers, takers of money, and information stealers? Pay to blog, pay to take survey's are not Jobs.
75% of these ads are spam.
Companies that respond with having to check credit scores are not jobs, they are opportunist
It's an endless cycle of chasing a legit job.
Even staffing agencies have many qualified applicants but few clients in need at this time. That's how you gear employment status. Do an article that interviews the top staffing agencies and see how many qualified applicants they have and how many jobs they are staffing at the moment. That is an indicator.

Great points. I checked the postings in my area and found a lot of similarities, including jobs for companies I happen to know went out of business, a few from 2008, babysitters for a couple hours per day, and several from a company I know that promotes from within (then eliminates the hired person's old job) but floats all jobs to the public. There were lots of blind ads, as you describe.

These numbers can not be believed.

the US economy is still a house of cards based on mounting debt. I'm tired of the administration trying to talk up the economy when no one but the very richest will benefit.

The job market in Detroit has been awful since 2006. How much longer can we wait for jobs to return? Guaranteed health care for all would send hirings into the stratosphere. So what's the hold up, Blue Dogs?

I think you mean that hirings would go up if companies no longer have to get health care for their workers. The flaw in that argument is that if govt began to cover everyone's insurance, plus cover millions more than are covered now, then taxes would need to be raised substantially to pay for it. So it's like robbing Peter to pay Paul. People will stay pay for it.

According to the posts I have read, the jobs must be at fast food restaurants and minimum wage outlets with no benefits--how is this going to help anyone move to find a job???
People used t omove to other states for a better job and wages--now it's jost to survive if you can.

Not true for Washington DC! My husband also has been out of stable job during this past 7 years in DC area. He has never have any unemployment benefits since he's self employed and always rely on himself in solving job problem for two decades
This time is different and the most difficult experience we 've ever have. He has no works for almost a year and that seems as if we were in real hard time just trying to stay alive.
Living in this broken system of government can make one become disillution. This country can be better and greater if people understand the diffirent between corporatism, democracy and the republic. If, we the people, don't demand changes in how the election financed --the system is going to stay corrupted. Several questions I also have are that ... can people still be able to rely on these leaders to solve this unemployment crisis? And where are all the trillions dollars gone after the urgently bailout and the economics stimulus?Maybe people need the real truth from their reps, gov and the medias. For me,the simple thing is if the banks don't lent the businesses can't grow-- and with this in mind my next question is ...have anyone seeing or having any helps from the bank or government regarding home forclosures. Hopfully, very few people are on their own.

I'm not quite sure what your question is, but if you've got a foreclosure problem, there are lots of HUD approved agencies in the DC area that can help you. Check out: www.NACA.com

It's a HUD (Dept. of Housing and Urban Development) certified counseling agency. They might be able to help you or at least refer you.

The number of jobs available in a given city, is different from your personal experience. It is sad that your family has had a hard time getting the employment it needs, but that does not mean that there are not lots of jobs out there, perhaps just not in your husbands field? If there are 6 jobs for every 1 person, and your husband can not find work, that is just a fact, and probably just means that those 6 jobs (for example) are not in his given field. I hope you have good luck elsewhere!

I've been hoping someone would do this, but you need to give more time to peo0ple to co-ordinate and make travel arrangements, as well as a place to stay.
I live in the southwest and wil have to dig up airfare at a reasonable price, rent a car, ect.
Where will everyone meet?
You will have a bigger populace show if you give them time to make arrangements and directions on where to be. This cannot be accomplished in less than 3 weeks as you are proposing.

I WANT to be there-I want this to happen--it's long overdue, but I can't get arrangements made in this short of a notice. I have dogs and a house, plus costs for the trip. It just can't be done with the huge number of people to make it work. People will have to show up by a million to make D.C take notice.

Interesting indeed. It looks like you're trying to imply something snarky without fully looking at the facts. 70% of the cities with the BEST job prospects were also in "Blue States." And how many people and jobs are in Utah or Oklahoma anyway?

I thought I was being funny, but I'll accept the description of snarky as well. And Utah and Oklahoma have the 4th and 7th lowest unemployment rates in the country- so they must be doing something right.

Not many. Utah has one of the lowest populations in the United States. And since when did Florida become a blue state? I don't recall, but even if Pres Obama squeaked by in Florida (don't know if he did) but if he did, it didn't make Florida a blue state anymore than it made some of the other states Obama "turned" into blue states.

Florida was also the state that put George Bush over the top, especially in 2000. It's Governors and congressional delegations have been consistently Republican.

Not only is what dorie12 said about your comment true, but what dorie said means you FAILED to mention that 7 of the worst cities are in STATES that ALSO have cities in the top 10. (Count 'em)

When you try to be partisan at least TRY to make sure your point is valid. (I know that's been hard for your side.)

Actually, Salt Lake County is the largest (and wealthiest) county in Utah with just over 1M population. The total state population is about 2.2 M, so SL County is almost half of the state.

Obama won SL County by a slim margin. Obama also won two other counties in UT, both of them more prosperous than their red neighbors

How dare you think like a rational person 86! This is obviously a malicious Right Wing Conspiracy set up to break the unions. It's only with their big money that they are able to engineer a faux-recession in hopes of starving black people and repressing other minorites!

People keep harping on these mythical Govt jobs in Dc. The scam is, government workers generally only hire other govt workers. If you have no experience working for the government it's a pretty "small" and "closed" community and almost impossible to get a job. Most hiring managers are too impotent or scared to risk hiring someone from outside the govt for positions because they think the Govt culture is "so different than anything else in the world." It doesn't matter if you have 15 years as a PM in the commercial world, if you don't have any Govt experience, they would almost never hire you. Because the other candidate will have 1 or 2 years of Govt experience. Also I think it's part of the "weighting" system they have on resumes.

Not to mention the whole matter that 90 % of the govt jobs in DC require some sort of security clearance which you can't get unless you have a government jobs. Very few employers and agencies will sponsor someone for a clearance because the Govt charges over $5,000 for contracting agencies to get their consultants. One of the quick fixes Congress can do RIGHT now to at least help the DC area is lower
the darn cost to get a clearance. There's nothing that justifies the Govt charging contracting agencies $5,000 PER worker to get a freaking background check.
