I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Consumerist points out that musician David Carroll has released a sequel to his "United Breaks Guitars" video -- which just may be the single most famous act of customer frustration in YouTube history.

Carroll, of course, had his guitar smashed by United Airlines baggage handlers and the airline initially refused to reimburse him for the damage. He promised to record three songs railing against United's behavior.

After the song began racking up YouTube views -- it's been seen more than 5 million times by now - United caved and offered to pay up. Carroll declined and suggested that United give the money to charity.

Carroll's second song is a bit more tender that the original, and the production value has been ratcheted up a notch. He serenades the caustic United supervisor who denied his claim back in 2008. "Oh, Ms. Irlweg, we don't need to fight," he sings.

In fact, the entire song is structured as a love-gone-wrong ballad. How touching! Here's more:

"If you just come to your senses, and accept the consequences of you letting certain baggage handlers smash my property..."

Good song, yes. Country, no.

United did not break this man's guitar. All UNITED aircraft have room in the cabin to stow a guitar such as this gentlemen was carrying. A feeder carrier contracted by UAL, flying a small regional jet, broke the guitar. They are NOT United trained nor are they United employees. This applies to the pilots as well. United Airlines is currently furloughing 1450 HIGHLY qualified pilots and decreasing United flying. In place, United is subcontracting an almost equal amount of its reduction to its sub-contract, out sourced feeders. In essence, UAL is replacing a 15,000+ hour pilot with one who is fresh out of flight school and potentially less than 1000 hours of flight time. All to save a buck and further pad the pockets of UAL management. I need to add, this is not exclusive to UAL. All the experienced carriers are out sourcing flying to the lowest bidder. There is a reason 155 people walked off Sully's Hudson River crash. In contrast a month later, a LOW time first officer and highly marginal Captain plowed one in Buffalo. If you are not on a major airline full sized jet, you are taking a huge gamble with your safety. Fly safe...

It's not his girlfriend, read the credits. He does have a wife (Jill) but she wasn't in it, just helped.

I flew United a year ago. They broke the wheel on a 200$ piece of luggage. They told me that it wasn't part of the luggage protected under their handling of baggage. They said you buy another wheel ( after paying 1500$ to fly! ) So I repaired it myself ( creatively ) though it's still not as good as before United got their hands on it! I've flown dozens of times with 10's of 1000$ paid to do so..... I've never had such terrible service as with United! I also had the longest wait to check in with these guys...2hrs!

These days I avoid them with a passion! Opting to fly NW, KLM, Air France & Korean Air. All have been outstanding in service & accommodations!

I'm glad to hear others voice the unreasonableness & consumer unfriendliness of this company. United! .....you need to change! .... AND for the better!

I used to work for United Airlines, doing reservations. We were treated horribly by management, and paid just a little more than minimum wage. I only spent a year and a half there, and I hated it. Very stressful job. United Airlines does not care about its employees, and not about its customers, either, except for getting their money.

I met an Australian man who did the same exact job, in Australia, for United Airlines. Thanks to strong unions there and laws which favor workers, he was paid much more than I was, and had a month's paid vacation every year.

Johnmorgan you are so right about the unions. America needs to wake up! and realize that our economy & society was the healthiest when unions & Keynesian Economics were valued & prevailed as the social norm. If anyone is interested in the value of unions, you should listen to the sociologist Alex Carey's work, of how big business has had a century old plan to undermine the American Democracy by economic means on the middle class via union demonization & government privitization.. it's very interesting and lengthy scholarly
research, which can be accessed here:

Watchoo talking? According to Glenn Beck we got the best healthcare inna whole world, and I'm sure he'd say we got the best airlines and management-employee relations in all the universe. Seriously. . . I kid. I kid. :)

Similar videos depicting the Health Care Opponents and disinformation needs to be made. I would hire or advertise Dave Carroll as the guy to sing about all the social injustice themes this country faces. A sort of 'Woodie Guthrie Depression folk singer' style fits the climate right now.

Dave Carroll could cut out a niche for himself as the 'expose injustice' song writer. His credibility has been established through personal experience. Just take it a step further and Carroll can make it part of his national character.

All this end of recession talk is just talk and all it does is raise the price of gas. Here we get the same lies about oiur inventory going down "surprisingly, etc." Yet we have much more in inventory than ever before and don't forget the off-shore tankers who also hold oil for our banks. Gas fell 14 cents wholesale but the stations only reduced it by 2 cents. Oil must be the only category where they still
make money and they are trying to keep it high. I wish we could sue them for manipulating the price.
I read more and more headline daily that companies are still laying off by the thousands. I want to
know where we are coming out of recession when the truckers haul only about 50% of what they used to haul, so do the freight trains. They, whoever they are, try to brainwash us that this nightmare is over when even worse is yet to come.

Typo in my last. Apologies to all. The bank in question is A Chase Bank subsidiary called Washington Mutual [WaMu] The lesson learned is to not hit the send button so quickly. Hard to get these back after they are gone.
