States With Most Uninsured Most Likely To Believe Euthanasia, Govt. Takeover Myths

EDITOR'S NOTE: The story below includes references to polling conducted by the firm Research 2000. The reliability and accuracy of Research 2000's polling has since been called into serious question by a report published in June 2010 by a group of statistical analysts.

The states that have been most skeptical of President Barack Obama's agenda for health care reform also have some of the highest levels of uninsured people in the nation.

A new study by Gallup shows that large swaths of populations in the South and West -- anywhere from one-in-five to one-in-four individuals -- are currently lacking health insurance coverage.

These same regions also have the largest percentage of populations who believe widely perpetuated mistruths about the Obama agenda, including allegations that the president will set up "death panels" and wants a complete government takeover of the health care system.

According to Gallup, of the 25 states with the greatest percentage of the uninsured, all but three are based in the South or the Midwest.

LIST OF STATES WITH MOST UNINSURED

Texas - 27 percent of the population is uninsured New Mexico --- 25.6 percent Mississippi - 24 percent Louisiana - 22.4 percent Nevada - 22.2 percent Oklahoma - 22.2 percent (considered a Midwest state) California - 21 percent Wyoming - 20.7 percent Florida - 20.7 percent Georgia - 20.7 percent South Carolina - 20.4 percent Montana - 20.3 percent Alaska -- 20.2 percent Arkansas - 20.1 percent Colorado - 20 percent Oregon - 19.4 percent West Virginia - 19.3 percent (considered a Northeast state) North Carolina - 19.3 percent Idaho - 18.8 percent Utah - 18.1 percent Kentucky - 17.9 percent Tennessee - 17.8 percent Nebraska - 17.7 percent Alabama - 17.2 percent Missouri - 17.1 percent (considered a Midwest state)

STATES IN SOUTH AND WEST ARE AS FOLLOWS

South: FL, NC, SC, AL, MS, GA, VA, TN, KY, LA, AR, TX

West: NM, CA, OR, WA, AK, HI, MT, ID, UT, NV, AZ, WY, CO

Compare these findings to those pulled from a recent Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll, which showed that more people in the South and Midwest are prone to believe myths about Obama's health care plan than in other regions of the country.

In the South, 26 percent of the public said they believed the health care reform plan being considered by President Obama and Congress requires elderly patients to meet with government officials to discuss "end of life" options, including euthanasia. Twenty percent of Westerners said the same thing. In the Northeast and Midwest those numbers were 11 percent and 17 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, 45 percent of Southerners said they thought Obama's health care reform included a government takeover of the entire health care system. Twenty-three percent of Westerners agreed. In the Northeast and Midwest those numbers were 10 percent and 20 percent respectively.

That populations most in need of comprehensive insurance reform are most likely to buy into false criticisms of the president's plan is a fascinating window into the current state of the health care debate. Theoretically, the president should be receiving more support in his efforts to expand coverage from those who currently lack it. The opposite, however, seems to hold true.

My, my, it sounds as if we need a little balance, in here.
Has it occurred to anyone, that we don't have health insurance, because we don't want health insurance.
It's my body and my choice. If I choose to save $4,000 a year, or more, by not purchasing a very expensive lottery ticket, which is all health insurance is, it's no one's business. Least of all, the government's.
Since I choose to remain uninsured, I see no need for the govt. to force me, at the point of a gun, or the threat of prison or lose of property, to purchase something, that I do not want, and currently, do not need.
For all of you liberal clowns, north of the Mason Dixon Line, please stay there, and wallow in your elitist, self induced, imploding economies.
As to REAL health reform, until you get the roaches and the rats out of the pantry, there is little use in plugging the holes. I'm talking about REAL tort reform, starting with a ,loser pays, system. That, by simple economics, would remove the majority of the lawsuits, across this land. A lawyer would no longer file a frivilous lawsuit, if he knew that it was really just a bogus attempt at extortion, if he knew that he would be covering the bill. This needs to be applied, across the board, not just in health care.
Stay, the hell, out of my life. It's mine to live, as I choose.

My my, it sounds as though you need a simple education in our legal system. We have a loser pays system, friend. Through statutory attorney fees to the prevailing parties and through the jury verdict, there is undeniably a winner and a loser. Your entire premise is bogus. Tort reform has been passed in a majority of states, capping the maximum verdict awards that the plaintiff can recover. I am south of the mason-dixon line (Florida), and i assure you that tort reform has been passed in this state---as a 3rd year law student, i've become quite familiar with it. Moreover, there are already several procedural safeguards in place to prevent frivolous lawsuits. Any lawyer worth his salt will file several dismissal motions throughout any civil suit. If the action is truly frivolous, it will never come close to reaching a jury verdict, unless the judge is insane (which is an entirely different matter than your ridiculous tort reform as a panacea concept). In short, do not talk about things that you know absolutely nothing about.

Also, i am going out on a limb and guessing that your decision to forego health care to save money is a fairly uncommon one to the typical uninsured family. Do not allow your own ignorance and selfishness to blind you of the very apparent need for a universal health care option for 47+ million uninsured citizens in this country.

I am a southerner, not by choice, but by birth. To say there is something wrong with that is like saying there is something wrong with black people because they were born black. Some of the comments I've read here about southerners are as bigoted and close-minded as those I've heard about liberals. This has moved past liberal/conservative; democrat/republican. Some of what I've read on here scares me. Like the article "Here's how you can stop right wing media". Seriously? You want to infringe on the First Amendment? Silence a voice because it's not in line with your thinking? That is ludicrous! I don't agree with CNN, but I would never expect them to be shut down. What scares me is people's willingness to let the government step in and 'take care' of everything. Medicare: broke. Medicaid: broke. Social Security: broke. A treasury continuously printing Monopoly money. Something definitely has to be done about healthcare, but socializing it is not the answer.

Didn't bother you to "Let the government step in and 'take care' of everything, " in two wars, a couple of hurricanes, and a constitution trampled.

"You don't like the country, leave. No one will stop you.

Why do you think they have the lowest rates of insurance to begin with?

This isn't the first time someone has lied to them to cause them to oppose something that is in their best interest. The people that are easiest to lie to have the least in a democracy.
09:08 PM on 08/21/2009
Their best interest? What a load of tripe. The mantra of despots throughout history is that they were doing what they were doing for the people's best interest. Freedom is the only thing in anyone's best interest. If you need government to help take care of you then that is a character flaw within you, not cause to steal from others claiming you have a right to it.

I'll tell you what, you worry about what is in your best interest and I'll worry about mine. No government necessary.

This is a nice correlation study. Mr. Stein should also check to see who owns the media in those regions, check to see if those same conglomerates are affiliated with insurance and track the lobbyiest $ to those states politicians.

Same old story.
The stupid and the ill-informed dragging the rest of us down with them.
Same people who were against women's suffrage.
Same people who were against social security.
Same people who were against the Civil Rights Act.
Same people who were against Medicare.
Same people who were against Medicaid.
Same people who were against the American's With Disabilities Act.
Same people who will be against doing anythging about Global Warming.
Same people who will resist education reform.

"Same people who were against the Civil Rights Act."

The DEMOCRATS. The Civil Rights Act was a Republican bill. MLK Jr. was a REPUBLICAN.

You assume that only you world view is the correct one. That is pure arrogance and the reason the Left is losing favor with the middle of the road Independents that decide elections.

These states are not only the states with the highest percentage of uninsured. They are also the states with the highest percentage of uneducated people and the highest obesity rates. Almost all of them are well below the national nominal per capita GDP average of $ 39750.- H

Hence, they are the states with the highest percentage of Republican voters. Apparently, stu.pid votes stu.pid.

Think about all of the other things many Southerners believe: "The South will rise again." The lunar landing was a hoax. Butter is one of the four food groups. When you put it in context, it doesn't seem that surprising that they also are scared silly by death panels, etc.

There are still some in the South that will never step over the 'Mason-Dixon' line for fear they will be killed by Yankees. I know this is a fact because I was raised in the South (escaping when I was 18).

Along with having the most uninsured, these are the states that are among the most infested by fundamentalists and the ones most frequently afflicted by natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, floods, drought, tornadoes), which presumably are caused by the God that the fundamentalists worship.

And these are some of the most religious/conservative areas of the nation. Maybe they think Gd will heal them? Or maybe its as ugly as cutting off their noses to spite their feet? I know doesn't make sense huh? Neither does the uninsured fighting to get quality, reliable and affordable healthcare. But let's be honest, these are also folks that are the most racist and are currently fearing a "trick". That agreeing to HCR with a strong public option will be a trojan horse hiding revenge for lack of reparations. They're just projecting their fear onto HCR and will we have to pay the price for their bitter ignorance? Oh you betcha!

Maybe we should let them sucede. And when the health care industry sucks them dry, they do nothing to improve education, restore jobs or do nothing to produce green energy and run out of fuel, when all this comes to pass and they come crawling back, then and only then can we begin a healthy dialouge with these folks. Otherwise, they'll find fault with everything Obama tries to do.

How sad that it took HCR to expose how racist so much of this country still is.

Remind me again, what makes us great? Is it what we produce? Is it how we treat our poor, sick and elderly? Is it our [cough] democracy? What? I'm struggling in trying to see the remains of tatered greatness through the dirty hands of corporate greed and political self preservation.

I have an idea...lets just give over the reigns to the political right since they seem to know best how to get us onto the right track. Oh, I'm sorry. We already did that and look where it got us.

When the sank Clinton's plan they insisted that the wanted Health Care Reform (as they are saying now). However, we got nothing in the last eight years except more of the same. Big for-profit insurance run amok. If we trust them to do what is right they have shown that they will pay themselves more for providing us less care. Period.

People need to learn something and use their own common sense. Except common sense isn't so common these days.

Stop blaming the Right for what the Left has controlled for nearly three years. The Demos have controlled the purse strings since Jan 07. They promised to cut off funding for Dubya's war, yet every time it came for a vote the voted to continue funding it. The Dems under Clinton are the one's who pushed lenders to give home loans to people who couldn't afford them causing the mortgage meltdown. And barney Frank, after bailing out Freddie and Fannie was trying to get them to push more risky loans.

The Left has nothing but to play the blame game. If they had any real solutions to the problems they would fix the mess instead of blaming anyone they can think of. The Right has offered alternatives, but the Left is not interested. The Left hates the idea of Tort reform. Why? Because Dems are heavily funded by trial lawyers who benefit from the lack of tort reform.

Your Messiah is leading us towards nothing but ever increasing control of your life by government. If you can't see that, that's your problem. But nothing Barry proposes is consistent with Liberty.

Maybe they should secede. Then those of us who have insurance will have lower rates.
09:22 PM on 08/21/2009
Not according to Democrats. The whole idea of forcing everyone to have insurance is to drive the costs down. So either you don't know what you are talking about or the Dems have been lying... or both.
