"What God doesn't give, doctor gives." These famous words belong to Rakhi Sawant, an actress and Bollywood's favourite pin-up girl. The candid admission was made on national television after the host of a talk show asked her to confirm reports of getting breast implants. In yet another instance, the nation woke up to the lurid headlines of Koena Mitra's admission to have undergone rhinoplasty. Plastic surgery in Bollywood is no longer surprising, but the candor of these actresses is still unusual.

Cosmetic surgery really came to Bollywood only in the 80s, when it was first reported that Rekha, popular actress and fashion diva, had redefined the contours of her face. And for over a decade after, reports of enhancements were few and far between, and very rarely confirmed. When former Miss Universe (1994), Susmita Sen won the crown and was on the brink of starting her career in Bollywood, she reportedly underwent a boob job. Shlipa Shetty, who recently became a popular face globally after winning the British reality show, Big Brother was one of the first few actresses in the industry to get her nose fixed

Today, cosmetic surgery has become increasingly rampant. And with the growing media glare on celebrities, it has also become difficult to keep under wraps. Bipasha Basu a model-turned actress had reportedly gotten silicone implants to enhance her cleavage. But it was only after the cosmetologist demanded that he had not been paid his dues that the skeleton tumbled out of Bipasha's closet. Kangna Ranuat was barely 17 when she made her acting debut, and reportedly underwent a cosmetic surgery to enhance her breasts and to make her lips appear fuller. Other 20 something celebrities like Minissha Lamba and Shruti Hassan have reportedly gotten undergone rhinoplasty as well.

And, it looks like our Bollywood heroines have rubbed the ongoing trend to the actors too. Aamir Khan, one of the leading stars of Bollywood and the hero of one of the highest grossing films last year reportedly treated himself to botox to make himself look younger. Another 40 plus actor, Saif Ali Khan too recently got rid of his crow's feet by getting filler treatments done in London and botox to keep those fine lines at bay.

It's not just celebrities that are jumping on the plastics bandwagon. The cosmetic surgery industry in India is growing at 34% annually, and is estimated to be worth a whopping Rs. 460 crore (US$110 million).

But with these surgeries come bungled jobs and health repercussions which people don't seem to be fully aware off. Unless the side-effects of such procedures become clearer, or a more real, organic sense of beauty becomes fashionable, Bollywood will continue to go under the knife, in larger numbers than ever before.

I don't understand the plastic surgery thing. The majority of the surgeries actually make them look WORST than before the surgery?? I don't get it. That sh*ts ulgy!

Real bodies and digital photography are fundamentally incompatible - today's cameras can make a freckle fill a shot from 50 feet away...

This badly written article inflates the importance of the people it uses as examples (Rakhi Sawant - actress? Bollywood's favorite pin up girl?.. what? I can not recall a single movie she has actually acted in, and please do not inflate her popularity, she is currently in the jungle of reality TV) and the rest is straight out of the Mumbai gossip columns. If you want to write on this subject, try some research, this article is just a loose collection of celebrity gossip cobbled together badly.

Journalism is as much about content as it is grammatical correctness. The field is dragged down thanks to articles like the one above.

"But it was only after the cosmetologist demanded that he had not been paid his dues that the skeleton tumbled out of Bipasha's closet."

Huh? Most people demand having their dues paid. I think the author means "accused", but I'm not going to sift through that article - I'm not the editor, chief writer, or anything else.

On the plus side, for all the gibber that the same corporations claim about Americans being uneducated and how everyone from every other country does everything better, the aforementioned article is yet another piece of proof (as if any more is needed) that companies will exploit and cheat for a quick buck. (After all, they say Americans can't read or count, so the manufacturing jobs go offshore... to countries who make and send back... things that can't be assembled because the worker didn't know how to count so the pieces are misaligned... or the toxic products or the ones made from cheap protein substitute that kill pets, or the drywall that causes allergies or electronics to malfunction (it's cheaper to import drywall these days?!!) In short, the whole wretched world is stupid or greedy beyond all sensible reason.

They also put "Shlipa Shetty", when the actress's name is Shilpa. Bit of a 'shlip' on their part..
07:28 PM on 08/22/2009
they have also used Shlipa Shetty as an example
and there are probably a lot others who dont publicise

In a country of a billion people, I'm sure there are more interesting and important things going on than 2 Bollywood actresses getting plastic surgery and talking about it!
03:07 PM on 08/22/2009
As long as people are entertained, and have some excuse to say the word "bollywood" around other white people, the article served its purpose.

Implants are gross. Nothing says thoughtless and shallow like fake breasts.

Wait. The Indian cosmetic surgery industry is worth $110 million US and they think that's a lot? Don't they have like a billion people over there? In the Los Angeles area they probably spend $110 million an HOUR on plastic surgery. Madonna alone has spent $110 million. Michael Jackson almost certainly spent that much in the year 1993.

Maybe you can get plastic surgery in India for like $3.99. Maybe that explains the low number.

indian women are hot
07:25 PM on 08/22/2009
before or after plastic surgery - or just the ones with a lighter skin tone?
10:40 AM on 08/24/2009
They believe the same thing over there, the w.hiter the better. H.ell they said gallons of bleaching cream just like the states. I don't believe he/she would have said that if they actually showed how the majority of the look over there, chocolate. :D

India jalso has a larger population then most countries - so statistically...

Hear about the German arm transplant patient? *

Considering Jocelyn Wildenstein's obsession to look like a cat, the Bollywoods could be grafting additional arms onto their body in a weird emulation of any number of gods. Ganesh, Shiva...whatever, there's a pantheon to exploit.

Well, if they graft numerous arms onto the body, that would be to emulate Shiva. To emulate Ganesh they would have to graft an elephant's nose onto their face.
02:35 AM on 08/22/2009
You're right, my memory of the lotus always makes me think multiple arms.

Ah, once again Western society brings a negative influence to the world, especially on the perception of beauty. It's bad enough that skin lightening is extremely popular in South and East Asia (and that white models are featured in ads and magazines even more than the Asian models); now the plastic Barbie look is being exported too.
05:45 AM on 08/22/2009
it's not being exported... it's being imported. Bollywood only makes fictional song and dance parodies... much like disney. The actors need to look like barbie to make it in the industry. At least this time it's not the West's fault... Maybe if Bollywood starts making movies about reality-based social issues.... maybe then "imperfect" actors will have a chance at fame.
03:04 PM on 08/22/2009
You obviosuly have no idea about Bollywood.
