The Plum Line:

A major factor in President Obama's slide in today's big Washington Post/ABC News poll, which is preoccupying the political classes today, is his surprisingly sharp drops among Democrats and even liberals, accordin to crosstabs that were sent my way.

All the hope I had for this president being a game-changer is gone - I'm left to trying to determine if his failure is due to incompetence or lack of character. I now understand that it is sadly both!

What's a game changer to you? and what do you see as the role of the president in this democracy?

(please do not read anger or annoyance in this, I am asking to put your view into context)

It seems like every day there's a new headline on HP announcing that the public insurance option is a dead issue. Why should we be surprised that Obama's favorability ratings have fallen? The president has not said any such thing, so I find it despicable that this negativity is in continuous circulation.

I would like to point out that HP is not sold on news stands, so there is no need to indulge in sensationalism to entice readers.

So what you are saying is that HP is now conservitive? Ha Ha

Only a sliver of what is negative about you hero ever makes it on here.

HP has a duty to let you know that BO is a fraud.

It is such a beautiful feeling knowing that you libs and dims are finally seeing the light. Obeyme was a real bad decision, and most of you voted for him for reasons other than his political experience. Obeyme’s lack of experience and complete lack of leadership has led directly to his current swan dive in the polls. You all must now suffer through buyers’ remorse. Many of you think that his poll numbers have remained high for such a long time due to Obeyme’s accomplishments; that could not be any further from the truth. He held on to his high numbers because you dims and libs refused to admit his shortcomings. Many of you still hold on to that thread of hope that your poor decisions in the voting booth will amount to something positive for America. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Obeyme is a “Lame Duck” and your house and senate majorities are in peril. If Obeyme executes the Nuclear Option to pass the Public Option, the dims will lose the house and senate forever.

I'm fascinated by the psychology of a comment like this.

Perhaps you're simply a paid troll, in which case I guess I get that your role is simply to engage the enemy, which I've now done. So, if that's the case, you've won.

But if you actually believe the c.rap you're writing, why on earth would any of you people think that calling Democrats and Progressives "dims" and the President "Obeyme" would get ANYONE to take what you are saying seriously?

Why are you people so incredibly ugly? And angry? Who's actually done anything to you in either this administration or from this portion of the country's demographics that justifies either your rage or your meanness?

It's an addiction, this awful ugliness, and feels fun when you're spurred on by the likes of Rush Limbaugh. There's energy here, adrenaline. And you know what? Ultimately it will eat you from the inside out.

If you can, stop for a second and step outside of yourself and ask yourself what anyone here at the Huffington Post has done to deserve the kind of language you just used. Why choose to live there?

I don't think we are seeing the same light that is guiding you. Anyone who for any reason would hand over the well-being of his family to the likes of McCain and especially to Palin still has little to nothing to offer on the issues at hand. And we won't spend too much time on buyer's remorse. We will spend time -- lots of it -- fighting against the corporate interests that drive the entirety of our government, and against both the misinformation and the outright lies of most Republicans.

Wow! I'm a freedom loving Aussie and I find this paranoia over decent pubic health care amazing.

We've had it for almost 30 years.

I've expounded on this in many of Huffo's threads but let me simply say... America you deserve better, do not believe the Conservative lies.

NB: It took two goes in my country to get universal Medicare established. The Conservatives got rid of it when they got voted back in. The Labor Party re-established it at the next election after that. And although they have undermined it every time they got back into power the Conservatives don't dare try to get rid of it again. What I am getting at here is you have to push HARD for it- it's NOT going to happen through bi-partisanship.

Obama needs to address his own party - the Blue Dogs before the blame is laid at the feet of the Republicans.

As much as I don't like the GOP, and their antics, this is a Democratic party issue.

The GOP and the playing games of bipartisanship is merely a distraction so you won't notice that Obama and company really do not want the public option. As long as the Senate Finance Committee pretends to be working on a bipartisanship basis you all blame the right for this mess.

Blame the blue dogs in the Senate. That is where health care stops - with them.
12:35 AM on 08/24/2009
Michaela - I think the point is now that O can address everyone as much as he wants, but it's not going to help. People have lost trust, and are just overloaded from way too much coverage.

The real game that's being played is - pass the healthcare quick, before someone reads it.

People have been realizing that this is the game and they don't like it.

Also, the Constitution does not allow for the govt to force health care on the public.

Look, get serious here.

If the White House wanted a public option they'd have someone on the Hill every day in private meetings with the Blue Dogs cramming it down their throats.

Look back at how they acted with the war supplemental. They know how to do cram down.

Public Option was DOA the day Obama chose Rahm as Chief of Staff. Rahm doesn't want it -period. Rahm told the blue dogs he recruited they could vote however they wanted on anything.

Obama is not a progessive and Rahm is a corporate hack.

Good points--I dislike the hijacking of disapproval by the right.

There are always periods of disillusionment after the honeymoon. I think this is "news" because Obama had very high approval ratings when he entered office and he held on to them for a very long time.

I'm no Obama fan but I see the congressional Democrats, especially the Blue Dogs, as his undoing.

His inexperience is reflected in thinking that fellow politicians ultimately share the same goals as his and in being unaware that his efforts to reach compromise with Republicans would be viewed as weakness to which they would respond with contempt.

Obama will be fine because he is a quick learner, I just wish he had Dean and Kucinich next to him instead of Emanuel and Biden.

It is very difficult to govern from the middle.
I think there is a method to this madness.
After all, he proved, to everyone's astonishment (including mine), that this dark horse was a winner.
At the end of the day, we will have a bill we can be happy about.

As a left of center strong Obama supporter my confidence is waning. I want to see Obama take the gloves off and stop acting like he can win over ANY Republicans. It ain't going to happen. THEY ARE NOT HIS FRIENDS, NONE OF THEM. I hope he realizes that by now. Republicans don't do policy. The Republicans are focused on regaining power, and that means destroying Obama, which also means destroying healthcare reform. There is nothing for the GOP to gain by supporting healthcare reform. If it's successful, which I believe it would be, then the Obama (and therefore the Dems) gets credit for enacting a popular and much needed policy. Ultimately, the GOP has no interest in having anything the govt does succeed. They want govt to fail and do what they can to ensure that it fails. They are there to protect the interest of big business, the rich, and the powerful. Obama needs to dump the idea that he can garner bipartisan support and move forward with whatever he thinks is in the best interest of the American people. Stop being Mr. Nice guy.

I am disappointed as well, but I think it's more about appeasing corporate interests and insuring campaign contributions for the future. Alleged concern for bi-partisanship is simply a decoy. Seems like concern for the public welfare is also somewhat incidental.

And why must one vote for any candidate? I didn't. I went to the ballot box and cast my votes but not casting a vote for a presidential candidate that never earned my vote IS voting...
09:00 AM on 08/23/2009
Because by not voting you are voting for the GOP candidate!!
09:55 AM on 08/23/2009
I would vote for Kucinich

interesting that you name two Republicans as Obama alternatives, he is a Democrat you know.

Its a time for change regardless of what Obama does. He can either grab hold of this, or get pulled along at the direction of the wind. I think if he made a hard and fast declaration that he will accept nothing less than a public option...he'd get his feet back. The 72% who want reform (including the left) would provide the boots on the ground. Otherwise, there won't be a single American who won't accept as common knowledge that Obama and Congress sold us out to the insurance industry.
