LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County coroner's finding that the death of Michael Jackson was a homicide could mean criminal charges for his doctor, who told investigators he administered a mix of powerful drugs to treat the pop star's insomnia hours before his death.

The homicide ruling was based on forensic tests that found the anesthetic propofol combined with at least two sedatives to kill Jackson, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the findings have not been publicly released.

The finding does not necessarily mean a crime was committed. But it does help prosecutors if they decide to file criminal charges against Dr. Conrad Murray, the Las Vegas cardiologist who was caring for Jackson when he died June 25 in a rented Los Angeles mansion.

"It is an easier prosecution when the medical examiner calls it a homicide," said Dr. Michael Baden, the former chief medical examiner in New York City, who is not involved in the Jackson investigation.

Through his lawyer, Murray has said he administered nothing that should have killed Jackson.

Murray told investigators that at the time of Jackson's death, he had been trying to wean the entertainer off propofol. The doctor said he'd been treating Jackson for insomnia for about six weeks with 50 milligrams of the drug every night via an intravenous drip, a search warrant affidavit said.

Murray said he feared Jackson was becoming addicted to the anesthetic, which is supposed to be used only in hospitals and other advanced medical settings.

Murray told police he was present when another Las Vegas anesthesiologist, Dr. David Adams, sedated Jackson with propofol at an unnamed cosmetologist's office "sometime between March and April of this year," according to the affidavit.

Story continues below

It was about the time Jackson requested that Murray become his personal physician for a European tour, the affidavit said.

A woman at Adams' office in Las Vegas referred calls Tuesday to his lawyer, Liborius Agwara, who did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine records show Adams has been licensed in the state of Nevada since 2002, and there are no reports of malpractice and no disciplinary issues against him. Ongoing investigations are confidential unless a licensee is named in a formal administrative complaint.

The affidavit was unsealed in Houston, where Los Angeles police took materials from one of Murray's clinics last month as part of their manslaughter investigation. Manslaughter is homicide without malice or premeditation.

The affidavit says Murray told detectives that two days before Jackson's death, he had lowered the propofol dose to 25 milligrams and added the sedatives lorazepam and midazolam, a combination that succeeded in helping the pop star sleep. The next day, Murray said, he cut off the propofol and Jackson fell asleep with just the two sedatives.

But on June 25, Murray said, he tried unsuccessfully to make Jackson sleep with a series of drugs that included a 10-milligram tablet of Valium and repeated injections of two milligrams of lorazepam and two milligrams of midazolam.

When the combination didn't work, he said he gave in to Jackson's "repeated demands/requests" for propofol, which the singer called his "milk," according to the affidavit.

Around 10:40 a.m., Murray administered 25 milligrams of the white-colored liquid – a relatively small dose – and finally Jackson fell asleep.

Murray remained with the sedated Jackson for about 10 minutes then left for the bathroom, the affidavit said. Less than two minutes later, Murray returned and found Jackson had stopped breathing.

Cell phone records show three separate calls from Murray's phone between 11:18 a.m. and 12:05 p.m., the affidavit said. Murray said one call was to Jackson's personal assistant, Michael Amir Williams, saying he needed help to deal with an emergency in Jackson's top-floor bedroom. It's not clear who else received calls. Murray told authorities he was administering CPR during that time.

In a statement posted late Monday on his firm's Web site, Murray's attorney Edward Chernoff questioned the timeline as depicted in the affidavit, calling it "police theory."

"Dr. Murray simply never told investigators that he found Michael Jackson at 11:00 a.m. not breathing," Chernoff said. He declined to comment on the homicide ruling, saying, "We will be happy to address the coroner's report when it is officially released."

The coroner's office has withheld its autopsy findings, citing a request from police to wait until their investigation is complete.

It is no surprise that such a combination of medications could kill someone, said Dr. David Zvara, anesthesia chairman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"All those drugs act in synergy with each other," Zvara said. Adding propofol on top of the other sedatives could have "tipped the balance" by depressing Jackson's breathing and ultimately stopping his heart, he said.

The 25 milligrams of propofol "is not a whopping amount," said Lee Cantrell, director of the San Diego division of the California Poison Control System. It was the cocktail of the other sedatives, known as benzodiazepines, that "may have been the trigger that pushed him over the edge," Cantrell said.

"This is horrible polypharmacy," he said, referring to the interaction among the various drugs. "No one will treat an insomniac like this."

The affidavit, signed by a judge July 20, said the coroner's office chief medical examiner told police his review of preliminary toxicology results showed "lethal levels of propofol."

Murray didn't tell paramedics or doctors at the UCLA hospital where Jackson was rushed about any drugs he administered other than lorazepam and flumazenil, a "rescue drug" to counteract problems from too much lorazepam, according to the affidavit.

It was only during a subsequent interview with Los Angeles police detectives that Murray gave a fuller accounting of the events leading up to the 911 call, the document said.

The coroner's office said Tuesday it had no comment on the case. A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's said no case had been presented so the office had nothing to comment on.

The line between safe and dangerous doses of propofol is thin, and according to the drug's guidelines a trained professional must always stay bedside. Home use of propofol is virtually unheard of – safe administration requires both a specially trained anesthesiologist and an array of lifesaving equipment. Murray was trained as a heart doctor, not a pain and sedation specialist.

A patient's weight determines the correct dose of a drug like propofol. Jackson was thin and reportedly exhausted from the rigors of rehearsing for a series of summer comeback concerts.

The hazards of getting the dose right is one reason propofol is supposed to be given only by specially trained professionals in a setting where rescue equipment and personnel are immediately available. When the drug is used for surgical anesthesia, doctors typically give one dose to put the patient under and then a lighter dose to maintain anesthesia.

Authorities said in the affidavit that federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents had been unable to find records tying Murray to the acquisition of propofol. By Aug. 11, however, investigators had served a search warrant at a Las Vegas pharmacy and uncovered evidence showing Murray legally purchased the propofol he gave Jackson on the day he died.

Jackson's family members released a statement Monday, saying they have "full confidence" in the legal process and the efforts of investigators. It concludes: "The family looks forward to the day that justice can be served."

hapless Murray! apparently, he made 3 cell phone calls when he found Mj barely breathing..instead of calling 911.. and he used the excuse there w as no landline phone in the house... he was on his cell around 47 mins.. before he finally called for help.. calling Prince and that security guard who s poke to 911.. by then MJ was dead..

who was he calling?? the cops know! Arnold Klein's name was mentioned.. hmm.. plot thickens.. as Klein vehemently denied he knew of Murray .. only after MJ's death as he lamely told Larry King..

the other definitely were his staff in Texas..

the 3rd?? TOHME? why?? if so??!

You know, one of the saddest things about this whole situation is that in an old Rolling Stone article from around the Thriller era Michael talked about how celebrities mess up their lives with drugs and that it happens over and over and they never seem to learn from other's mistakes. He was clean for so much of his younger years and it's been reported that even after his burn he turned down pain meds and the doctors insisted he would need it. Who knows if that led him down that path, but here we are. So sad.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone didn't talk him into taking the drugs. But who know why life turns out the way it does. Lisa Marie said that Michael told her that he felt he would die just like her father did. And others have said that Michael always felt he would not live to be an old man. So we don't know , we just don't know. But Michael fans have to remember that there were good in Michael too. When I think of him, I won't overlook the addiction, but I also won't overlook the Michael that visit sick kids in the hospital whatever country he visit, or the Michael which had kids from Make A Wish come to Neverland and enjoy themselves. And when we look back over his life, all we can hope is that the good Michael did ,outweigh any bad.

Agree. We all have our demons, we all make mistakes, we are all human. Michael was a human being - with all the frailties and foibles that come with being human. To me - the good in Michael, his incandescent talent, his big and generous heart, his love for his children and his caring and efforts to help those in need with outweigh whatever problems with drugs he may have had. It's the totality of a person we should look at - and the good that Michael did far outweighs the bad.

If Michael Jackson died from lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol, then he must have been injected with much more of the drug than his personal physician reportedly told police he gave the pop star, medical experts said.

"It doesn't make any sense," said Dr. John Dombrowski, a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. "I cannot believe that was the number that was given. Such a small amount won't tip anyone over in terms of respiratory depression.

The preliminary toxicology reports cited in the court records said that "lethal levels" of propofol were found in Jackson's blood. Final autopsy and toxicology reports have yet to be released by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Dr. Scott Engwall, vice chair of anesthesiology at UC Irvine's School of Medicine, said that for an average person without a high tolerance to drugs, 50 milligrams of propofol might be enough to make them doze off for five or 10 minutes. But the drug would immediately wear off. Someone like Jackson, who had been using it nightly for as many as six weeks, according to Murray's testimony, might close his eyes briefly -- or it might not work at all, Engwall and other doctors said.

"I think it's not unreasonable that there is some part of this picture we still do not know," Engwall said.

I heard that. I'm sure there is quite a bit about this doctor that he's not being honest about. He's not the only doctor involved, but I hope he's convicted and sets an example for other doctors elsewhere.

I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone believe Murray intended to murder MJ. As I said this was a bad doctor who had no idea what he was doing. And because MJ was an addict, it does not excuse this doctor behavior. I get caught up in all this, but I have to wait till all the facts are in and the Corner and Police speak up.

I don't believe it was murder either (though manslaughter falls under homicide as murder does), but it was ineptitude to the extreme. Manslaughter. Throw him in jail and throw away the key. And yes, I understand Michael is partly responsible here too. He should have sought help. But he also may not have realized how out of control the doses were getting since he'd been taking them for a while without dire consequences. The doctor, on the other hand, did know (or should have if he were any kind of doctor at all)

The only decent thing for the Jackson family to do after paying all his debts, is to disburse all the remaining funds from MJ's estate to those loyal fans all over the world who can proved they obsess the most over anything regarding him. They'd have to file an affidavit with the court detailing the extremes of their obsession with him, and how they've failed to get their own life in order. They would also be allowed to file an application for custody of his children, but it's optional, not mandatory.

Mr. or Ms. Jazzcomedian..........If you're trying to be funny or cute. YOU'RE NOT. I was a fan of Michael and I don't give a darn what people have to say. If you want to say I'm obsess with him. Your opinion and it doesn't matter. My life is just wonderful. I don't sit behind a computer diagnosing people that I know nothing about. I was a fan from the J-5 days and will always be. He was a great entertainer, if not the greatest. He was not perfect, but show me someone who is. I would love to meet them. I think I'll go obsess alittle more and listen to afew MJ's songs as I get ready for work. I'm in the mood to moonwalk. Peace out!!!!!!

as a someone familiar with the use of propofol in the operating room for more than 15 years I can tell you that
1) MJ shouldn't never have been left on his own after receiving that drug..
2)the doses mentioned by the Dr Murray are probably inaccurate (false), and probably the level found in MJ blood and tissues will guide the coroner as to the true dosages
3)Murray had no training as an anesthesiologist to justify his usage of that drug in a home setting without all the monitors used in the OR (including oxygen monitor in the blood aka pulse oximeter and CO2 monitor for the respiration and all necessary resuscitation equipments). All those monitors have not been mentioned to have been present in the room or residence.
4)At a minimum, it is a gross malpractice or negligence.
5)as a cardiologist, treating MJ as an addict is also beyond the scope of his specialty.

How was his family or anyone suppose to help MJ? MJ didn't want their help, that's why he wouldn't allow others in, exxcept the enables like the Doc. He wouldn't return phone calls, changing his number constantly. And when family and others showed up at his house, he had security turn them away. I don't think MJ consciously wanted to die, but the choices he made could only lead him down that envitable path--that finally saw his demise.

I wondered about Elizabeth Taylor. She helped get him into rehab the first time. I know that he kicked people out of his life when he was pushed into something he didn't like, but they were close until the very end. She was packing to see his O2 concerts when she heard the news. Maybe she didn't know how bad it was, or maybe she just felt more helpless this time. I can't imagine her devastation.

You're talking about a celebrity with a legendary addiction problem to booze and drugs.

She probably introduced Jackson to using an anesthetic as a sleeping aid. I doubt she was greatly involved in an effort to save him from the kind of decadent lifestyle she, herself, exists in. And consider the fact that she wanted this same Doc Murray to be her personal physician too. I don't think you can make her into his guardian angel.

From HitsDailyDouble:

NO MUSS, NO FUSS: To borrow Nikki Finke’s characterization, AEG executives are “ghoulishly” bragging around town that the movie deal made by the estate will enable the company to recoup the $30m in costs incurred in Michael Jackson’s planned comeback—and doing so without having to actually stage the shows, risk their cancellation or deal with Jackson’s wildly unpredictable behavior. They’re also openly celebrating the likelihood that they’ll turn a considerable profit on the upcoming M.J. memorabilia tour. (8/26a)

NO LOVE LOST: AEG’s profiteering and boasting about it have exacerbated the Jackson family’s already deep distrust of the company, which has become a target for their frustration. These ill feelings could be manifested in the wrongful death suit they’re expected to file against Dr. Conrad Murray following the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, which could illuminate the role AEG may have played in the artist’s demise. Meanwhile, AEG employees on both sides of the Atlantic are being threatened with their jobs if they talk to outsiders about anything Jackson-related. (8/26a)

Remember the ghoulish thing Tommy Mottola said right mj's death? "don't worry, Sony has enough Michael Jackson recording for years to come."

Oh, and does anyone recall the press conference MJ held a few years ago and accused Motolla of being the devil?

Sony and Tommy Mottola plotted against him and other

I believe multiple doctors started Michael Jackson on an unhealthy course of over medication
for his insomnia. He would not be the first person that had this happen to him or her.

However, in Michael Jackson's case in steps Sony, AEG, Colony Capital, and Dr. Murray. None of them giving a damn about our Angel, Michael Jackson. Conrad Murray began working together
with the corporatists. AEG, Sony, Colony Capital.

So, the corportists eventually, either set up or paid Dr. Murray to take the fall for Michael Jackson’s death. In any case, after administering the final lethal dose of Propofol he called the
other murder conspirators on his handy cell phone and they plotted for
hours as to what to do next. I think Murray, himself, came up with the idea of keeping
the room warm so it would be difficult to determine the time of death.

I believe Nurse Cherilyn Lee was paid to go to the police and media and insert (plant)
the Propofol addiction story to cover herself, and farther indict Murray.

There is no honor among thieves. So, I pray that, now, Dr. Conrad Murray, in order to save himself,
will start "singing like a bird", and bring his fellow conspirators down into Hell with him.
