That liberal base just got a high-profile voice to lead its charge.

The US used to be the good guys - and IT WORKED! Taking the long view, Bush/Cheney's insane culture of cruelty is a sick aberration. When it finally fades away, someday, Russ Feingold will be remembered as almost the sole uncompromising voice of decency in this era.

Go Russ!

Thank you Senator Feingold, you are one of the few in the Senate with any integrity anymore. Though I'm not your constituent, I very much appreciate your efforts.

Screw Feingold. He refused to run in 2008 and we got stuck with Obama. Now he's demanding progress and results. Too late, Russ.

Feingold is one of the few in Congress, and in government with integrity. Yet he has no chance to ever be president. We are doomed to endure these fools like W and Obama.

anymore it has changed to voting for the man who will do the least harm to the country.......we lost with MRbo however the old man may not have done better as liberals are still liberals.

I've been saying this for a while. Afganistan is different that Iraq in that at least there was some rationale for going to Afg unlike the lies that pushed us into Iraq. However, there has to be BENCHMARKS, GOALPOSTS, TIMETABLES in Afgh to avoid the disaster ending that Iraq has seen.

And btw, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Senator Feingold, he's one of a very few truthtellers in D.C. I thought he would have made a great pres were it not for the fact he's been divorced twice which in this day and age would be dissected and probably reveal some unpleasant things about him. Too bad.

Why are we in Afghanistan. We cannot wipe out terrorists, we create more! And Bin Laden died in 2001, so why the lies?

How about proposing your own timetable Senator?

Sen. Feingold is absolutely correct. The US should have no ground troops anywhere in the Middle East. Its a waste of America's time, lives and resources. Get out now!

Increasing unemployment should bode well for increasing military rolls which will be necessary to keep sending more troops to Afghanistan or Iran or N. Korean, whatever war du jour we are engaged in at any given time. This is all more a matter of process than outcome.

We've long since lost focus on what we're doing in Afghanistan. Ask yourself what our goals are? What's the ultimate end game for this?

Defeating the Taliban? We'll need several more years and tens of thousands additional troops.

Nation building? We'll need a huge cash infusion, domestic upgrades across the board, assistance from all of Afganistans neighbors, and quite a few years before they're even close to thinking about taking care of themselves.

Perhaps the goal is al Qaida? They're in Pakistan now, not Afghanistan, which is an unstable nuclear state.

Do we really want to spend another 5 to 10 years there for little to no real gain except for our national ego? We can't fix everything, certainly not one of the poorest nations on the planet. And all this in one of the worst recessions in the last 100 years.

So pull out and allow the Taliban and AQ to reconstitute itself? No, Obama won't do that because it will be political suicide. I'm not sure what the cost share is with our European allies, but it seems to me that they stand to gain quite a bit by a continued presence - After all, the U.S. isn't the only country that has suffered attacks. Maybe its time they up the ante.

it's amazing.... 1 years ago today, it was treason to suggest withdrawal of american troops from battle.... now we need a timeline.. right now.....i quess we really didn't want to get the terrorist that struck us afterall... bush knew that one.... that's why he went to iraq.....our politicians liked that one better..
i'm a veteran and do not like wars.... but there a big vacuum in the middle east cause by the eliminationof the iraq army which help keep terrorist in check and a balanced power..
we could come home tomorrow, but israel would have us in worls war III by wednesday... they will be the most powerful nation in area and have us backing them up... do you think for one minute that they will not expand and bully their neighbors since we have elimination the strongest army in the middle east.. we didn't make isreal safer with the iraq invasion.. we made the world less safe....

The thing is, during the campaign, Barack Obama made his intentions about Afghanistan clear. He was not in favor of ending that w a r. He also made his intentions about Pakistan clear. Since they border, and that border has been known to be a gateway for international-terror for years, especially under Perves Musharef, I don't think Obama is willing or ready to begin a conversation about a pullout. He's commited to brigning down the taliban, and defeating Al Queda in Pakistan. I don't know if it;s a good idea or bad, but I would not look to him to end anything. I think hewill escalate.

That's exactly right. Feingold makes a good point about money, lives and resources but I suppose that the U.S. can pull out whenever we are willing to concede the region to the Taliban and AQ.

There is nothing to win and so much to lose in Afghanistan and Iraq. Once all the Nato countries have fulfilled their obligations they will be gone as every country knows this is a fools mission started by the world's biggest fool.

I agree about Iraq, but not about Afghanistan. If for no other reason, we will have troops there in case we have incursions into Pakistan. It's unstable and they do have a nuclear arsenal. Barack Obama told us during his campaign that he was commited to the w a r in Afghanistan. It doesn't appear he has change his mind.
