Fast Company:

Apps, apps everywhere, but just how big is Apple's app economy anyhow? Chances are, it's bigger than you think. According to mobile ad startup AdMob, $200 million in apps are downloaded each month, making the App Store worth about $2.4 billion per year. To place that in context, that's slightly less than the nominal gross domestic product of Somolia, and quite a bit more than the GDP of Central African Republic.

They didn't mention the whole app thing was forced on Apple. Apple wanted to avoid downloads to keep their code clean - and focus on web based apps. When owners started doing it anyway - Apple gave in.

Just found Abbey Road on a late model IPOD I discovered when I cut open a turtle today! Yesterday, the CHRISTIE BRINKLEY float in on the high tide. She so hot! Without all the toxic batteries and stuff that float in, we scavengers ( that'd be everyone from the Minister of Justice's Assistant on down) would be even hungrier! Developed World the best! And that Mr Steven with the big Job? He tell that guy from Pepsi Cola: "You want sell sugared water to kids or you want get 40% on all musical artists royalty in perpetuity ?" Mr. Steve. He the man! He know kids die (maybe even sooner than him -I guarantee that happen- look at turtle!) but profit compound FOREVER! My friend say, " Give us 1% of profit to give kid clean water." I say, "Ahmed, you forget the Balmer/ Welch rule number one: it say we owe profits to shareholder!" They (the profits, not the Shareholder) live FOREVER! I name my kid Steve. He beautiful but always hungry. He don't even like the Abbey Road! I no fish no more. I study Tech stock.: huge short-term upsides and if they make this junk waterproof maybe i do more fishing. Western kid no care. Maybe my kid learn to love swimming for the Beatles. I like go America. Bye-bye. Jameel, Mogadishu

How is that news?
Somalia has been in a civil war since 1991 and from 1960 in turmoil.

I love Apple and my iPhone.

And anyone else find this story more than a bit creepy --- while Somalia starves and is ruled by brutality, we're filling our iPhones with more APPs than could be bought by the Somali's? the APPs are not all frivolous. But...
