Neither of them has ever been arrested, or gotten into a fistfight as an adult. Neither has had the time to set foot in either of the city's new baseball stadiums. City Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. has smoked marijuana, while City Councilman Tony Avella says that he has never had so much as a cigarette.
Those were among the revelations on Wednesday night in the first televised debate between Mr. Thompson and Mr. Avella, who are competing in the Democratic primary on Sept. 15 for the right to take on the two-term incumbent, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in November.
