EDINBURGH, Scotland -- The son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch has called the British Broadcasting Corp. a threat to independent journalism.

James Murdoch, the 36-year-old executive in charge of News Corp.'s businesses in Europe and Asia, spoke late Friday at the Edinburgh International Television Festival -- 20 years after his father delivered a keynote speech at the same event.

"In this all-media marketplace, the expansion of state-sponsored journalism is a threat to the plurality and independence of news provision, which are so important for our democracy," Murdoch said.

The BBC is subsidized by the British government and funded, in part, by television licenses that consumers must pay if they use a television.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. controls British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC, one of the BBC's main competitors in Britain.

"As Orwell foretold, to let the state enjoy a near-monopoly of information is to guarantee manipulation and distortion," Murdoch said, referring to George Orwell's book, "1984."

He said broadcasting policy had failed to keep pace with changes, relying on regulation and intervention from the state rather than empowering consumers.

Greg Dyke, the BBC's former director general, said Murdoch's argument was "fundamentally flawed."

"Journalism is going through a very difficult time -- not only in this country but every country in the world because newspapers, radio and television in the commercial world are all having a very rough time," he said.

Dyke said it was not the fault of the BBC that the recession and loss of advertising revenues had hampered news organizations.

Last month, a journalist told a British parliamentary committee that James Murdoch approved an out-of-court payment to settle a controversial phone hacking case.

News of the World editor Colin Myler said that Murdoch was told that 700,000 pounds ($1.1 million) would be paid to settle a case against the company.

The suit was brought by Gordon Taylor, head of the Professional Footballers' Association, one of the targets of the hacking.

The allegations against the News of the World, part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire, have been waged as part of a wider scandal concerning journalistic abuses.

Murdoch's Wall Street Journal just ran an editorial "Cheney for President".......this family should be not allowed to own more than one paper per country....that would still leave them 50. What a truly despicable family.

This young man is fully controlled, brain process and all, by Dad. there is no question, it is a known fact that I don't think any one would disagree with that Rupert Murdoch has a mini right wing media monopoly that covers both print and TV, including among many others, Fox news and The Wall Street Journal. How typical for a right wing mouth piece to say something so illogical and dumb, that the BBC has a media monopoly. The BBC reports the news. Murdoch reports what he wishes were true. If only wishes were fishes. This ding bat was probably home schooled by his Dad.

Oh, and letting a media kingpin enjoy a near-monopoly guarantees Truth, Justice, and the American Way?

Blog on, world! Death to all media monopolies!

Just two observations:

Any media outlet owned by Rupert Murdoch is hardly "independent," nor do they practice anything remotely resembling journalism.

In this era where medias tell lies as much as a any wily politicians eager
to keep the spotlight, I only read the headlines because any grown ups
who can handle the truth, know that "independent" journalist was dead
the day medias' revenues start depending mainly on advertising.

Most of these newspapers are just propaganda outlets for corporations'
interests and make sure it stays that way.

Yes people, all these dystopian futures depicted by "1984","A Brave New
World" and many mores, just took shape in front of your eyes since WWII
and we still wondering what is going on...

How ironical a statement is that, coming from a Murdoch in charge of News Corp.'s European businesses?

At least the BBC still reports the news.

Murdoch has done such an incredible amount of damage to American journalism.

I wish we had a BBC.

Our PBS is good. But it's not enough.

Hard to spread lies when the truth finds a way to be heard.
Simple as that.

This family is a threat to the entire world. Advocating right-wing positions like war and crushing competition through corporate monopolies will not have a happy ending. The Murdoch clan is one I truly wish were not alive.

murdoch and journalism in the same sentence?

I thought murdoch won in court to be able to say his organization was an entertainment company. Not a news company. So what the he$$ does he care about journalism? I hope the British have enough foresight to see what this little bast@rd is up to. I have said before that and I do not mind repeating - rupert is a false god in this country who has disciples beck, oreilly, hannity, greta, malkin and etc. spreading his false word. his religion is hate, bigotry and racism.

IRONY POLICE ALERT

Mr. Murdoch talking about the monopolization of the media. This after News Corp. has bought the Wall Street Journal among many other acquisitions. In related news, the Pope has recently accused several priests of being too Catholic and Dick Cheney accused the Obama administration of being too secretive. More details to follow.

THIS HAS BEEN AN ALERT OF THE IRONY BROADCAST NETWORK. If this had been actual irony Mr. Murdoch's pants would have literally burst into flames upon his comment.

Direct from the conservative playbook. Always accuse your opponent of everything you're guilty of. Preemptively, if possible.

Independent media? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. The BBC is highly respected in most circles, Murdoch or the other hand has done more to destroy independent media than anybody.
