Gardens on roofs are not just eye candy - they can save energy by significantly lowering the cost of heating and cooling in a building.

This is the roof of the five-story School of Art, Design & Media at Nanyang Technological University campus, in Singapore: it was designed by CPG Consultants Pte. Ltd. The roof insulates the building, cools the surrounding air and harvests rainwater for landscape irrigation.

These are great. I'm a big fan of green roofs, although I live in the desert so it probably wouldn't be very beneficial for me to have one.

What about Chicago's City Hall roof garden? It's long been an example that retrofiting old buildings (100+ yrs) can be done, long before many of those in the artticle were built. http://www.worldbusinesschicago.com/newsletters/art/CityHall.jpg

Ok, so this rooftop garden isn't quite as grand as the ones above, but it's pretty cool. Check out the video made by OrganicNation.tv that shows a restaurant in Chicago that grows all of the food it serves on its roof!
