Toyota Motor said Monday it was developing anti-drunk driving equipment that would lock the ignition of a vehicle if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver.

The system features a hand-held breathalyser, equipped with a digital camera, that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver's face for identification, a company statement said.

...but they can't develop a SUV roof that won't collapse in a roll over?

Just something else that will break.

Why not tougher laws on drunk driving? First offense, no license for a year and TONS of community service with victims of drunk driving.

Second, TONS of jail time. Etc.

Republicans will demand this device be put on cars because it makes a profit.

All the while preaching Personal Responsiblilty.

So we who do not drink at all will be forced to pay for something we do not need.

A handheld breathalyzer to combat drunk driving? Can the drunk driver even hold the thing long enough for it to read anything? Nice idea but I doubt people would really do anything with it.

If 50 million people Republicans say a foolish thing, it’s still a foolish thing.

These were around years ago developed by an American company - but of course it takes a foreign company to put it into production and make money from it.

I think it's more likely to malfunction and keep the car from starting because my wife is using nail polish removal while we're being chased by an ax wielding murderer. I'm against this.

Why are we giving andrew breitbart or his advertisers any ink? He's the guy who "unleashed invective" against Senator Kennedy the day after he died. Long term loss of short term memory, HuffPost editors?

I believe a recent study by Car and Driver and/or NTSB concluded that texting while driving is up to 6 times more dangerous than driving under the influence.

This will be a disaster for local government finances, lawyers, and car insurance company profits. If this goes to market, the government via special interests will do everything in its power to stop it, mark my words. Its a brilliant idea and I hope to see it common in every car soon.

An acoustic ignition interlock device to prevent the operation of excessively noisy motorcycles would be worthy of a Nobel Prize.

And these things are EASILY defeated by having someone else, not drunk, blow into it. Documented cases of this.

And is from the same Breitbart who unleashed a nasty Twitter smear campaign on the newly dead Ted Kennedy?
