WALDORF, Md. — House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told cheering and jeering constituents Tuesday he still supports a public health insurance option as part of a health care overhaul.

Previously he's said there's room for compromise.

At a packed high school gym, Hoyer, D-Md., was shouted down repeatedly during a town hall meeting where a crowd of 1,500 appeared to be evenly split between supporters and opponents of the health care overhaul effort.

One woman pressed the Democratic leader on whether he'd give in on the public option if Republicans refused to compromise.

"If the question is do I plan to vote for a public option with or without Republican support, the answer is yes," Hoyer said.

A public option would lower insurance premiums for everyone through competition with private insurers, he said. The House, he said, would not pass an alternative calling for nonprofit cooperatives, which has been floated in the Senate.

Last month, Hoyer seemed to contradict House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the essential ingredients of a health care overhaul package when he said he wanted a bill that would pass. A public option provision in any bill would face strong opposition.

Hoyer's office had organized a panel of citizens for Tuesday's event to provide "real-world" stories about their experiences with the current health care system. But they could barely speak over the shouting and boos.

The first questioner who challenged Hoyer directly, April Burke of Mechanicsville, Md., said her son and daughter in law both had lost their jobs and health insurance but were covered by the state.

"So why should I want to have the government get into my business?" she asked Hoyer.

The congressman said Burke's family would benefit from the health care overhaul being proposed. But she shouted back: "We want government out of our business now."

Others in the crowd wore T-shirts supporting the health overhaul that read "Our Lives Depend on it."

Medicare overhead cost is 3% of premiums; other insurance 13-25%. Extra-costs due to corporate structure, management compensation with padded perks; advertising/marketing; actuaries, lawyers etc. There are investments, takeovers, mergers, campaign-contributions and lobbying, outside consultants, bankers, lawyers, etc. - ALL Paid by healthcare premiums. With administrative costs of hospitals, nursing-homes and doctors at 24%, 19% and 12%, only half the premium is spent on care.

Cost-drivers are health-insurance, pharmaceutical, bio-engineering companies, led by management interested in bottom-line; hospital and nursing home administrators; medico-legal system, healthcare economists and consultants. Cost-drivers contribute to steep cost-curve. Complex formulary of insurance and funding makes the system cumbersome and inefficient, adding further irrationalities and alien motivations within the system. Goal of good patient care is lost in the shuffle.

WH should negotiate with the Insurance companies. Insure all, no denial of coverage and permit portability. Immediate 30% reduction in premiums and another 20% reduction over next two years. Half the savings to come from Insurance and the other half from the delivery of care. This will reduce healthcare cost from 17% GDP to 11%; making American business competitive in the world. With such a deal, all sides should be on board to sign off on a bill. If the insurance companies do not deliver, the Public Option should deliver by 2012.

That's why we need a bigger platform for what's going on...especially the shouting down of this wheelchair woman at NJ townhall. Google for contact on Sen. Steny Hoyer....and call these people, tell them to suggest this wheelchair-ed woman shouted down at the Pallone's NJ townhall be asked to Obama's speech. Perhaps show the video of her being shouted down at the townhall. Have her ask her question.

NJ Rep. Pallone 202.225.4671...732.249.8892....888.423.1140 NJ Senators Frank Lautenberg 202.224.3224 Sen. Bob Menendez 202.224.4744.

Also call NY Rep. Anthony Weiner 202. 225.6616 Brooklyn office......718. 743.0441 a strong, articulate supporter of public option.
COPY and SPREAD this to others. Flood them with calls.

Yes we do and you need to remind Sen. Grassley about that. He's been given his chance to represent the thugs he represents but only added fuel to the fire now he's talking about the talks are ongoing? Who doesn he think will listen to him anymore? The recess is over, now it's time for the real thing and the democrats are going to do this ALONE. GOT IT? ALONE! Like you say, we have the votes!!!!

I will type slowly so the people that don't want reform can understand...ins. cos. are only in it for the money! They do not care if you live or die, just as long as they can chose your destiny and the price of that destiny...

I just don't understand. Hoyer comes out for the public option the same day Obama takes it out?

So much for the re-set.

They'll need to make the bill 10,000 pages, sneak in whatever they want (probably by implicitly nationalizing health insurance companies), jam it through and when they're booted out of office, get great jobs for pharma and insurance. We'll never be able to withdraw what they do.

Obama now says he will not push for a "public option". Now is the time Obama should call for TORT reform. We should also be allowed to purchase health insurance across state lines.
