DUBLIN — Muhammad Ali made a sentimental journey Tuesday to discover his Irish roots, and met distant relatives during celebrations at the local town hall and a nearby castle.

Thousands lined the streets of Ennis, western Ireland, to cheer his motorcade as the three-time heavyweight champion visited the home of his great-grandfather Abe Grady.

Fans adorned streets with red, white and blue bunting and flags, while shop windows competed to display the most impressive posters honoring Ali – including one tongue-in-cheek portrait of him appearing ready to knock out an unpopular Irish politician.

Ali, who is 67 and battling Parkinson's disease, fought only once in Ireland, knocking out Alvin Lewis at Dublin's Croke Park on July 19, 1972.

Ali offered a few playful jabs to cameras but made no public comments and steered clear of throngs of autograph-seekers Tuesday, among them hundreds of kids whose schools closed early for the event. Police blocked off roads and kept crowds in line with railings.

Grady settled in Kentucky in the 1860s and married a freed slave. One of their grandchildren, Odessa Lee Grady Clay, gave birth to Ali – then Cassius Clay – in 1942.

Genealogists pinpointed Ali's Irish links in 2002, but Ali had never visited Ennis.

His visit to Ennis Town Hall was broadcast live on big-screen televisions outside, where locals also took in a live concert by traditional musicians, including best-selling accordionist Sharon Shannon.

Ali's wife, Yolanda, said her husband's Irish blood might help explain his legendary ability to bludgeon his opponents with blarney as well as punches. She kept close at Ali's side during the public events, talking to him and steadying him as they walked arm in arm.

"When you look at Muhammad's pugilistic skills and his loquacious ways, I am sure if his great-grandfather was alive, he would swear it came from him," she said. "If he were alive today I bet he would be in every pub talking about it too."

Mayor Frankie Neylon presented Ali with a scroll and proclaimed him Ennis' first "freeman," an honor conveying him special privileges in the County Clare town of 23,000. The mayor said the most valuable privilege would be free parking.

Yolanda Ali said the couple would return to Ireland "now that we know that Muhammad is an Ennisman."

People traveled hundreds of miles from across Ireland to see Ali, among them veteran Irish boxers who sparred with Ali in New York training decades ago.

Former Irish national champ Jim O'Sullivan recalled sparring with Ali and his trainer Angelo Dundee during a U.S. tour by Irish boxers in 1978 – and wished he'd known then that "The Greatest" was "just a Paddy like us."

"We'd have dearly loved to have known he was that wee bit Irish. We'd have given him some stick," O'Sullivan said, using an Irish expression for good-natured ribbing.

Ali was driven through the town to Turnpike Road, where his great-grandfather lived before sailing for America. He met several representatives of the Grady clan, most of them O'Gradys – the O connoting "son of" in the native Irish tongue.

Later, Ali was guest of honor at a fundraising banquet at nearby Dromoland Castle, one of Ireland's premier luxury hotels. He planned to return to the United States on Wednesday.

"I want MY America back...."

The blood of the forefathers of this great nation still pumps through the veins of millions of African Americans (especially Jefferson's). Most of us will find out we aren't "Indian" at all through DNA testing. I don't know who started that "I got Indian in my family" rumor but its being debunked nowadays with the research of Skip Gates. He tested Tina Turner (for one example) who thought she had a high percentage of Cherokee blood (I thought so too) and she found out she is actually about 25% (?) European and not native American/Indian. I bet if they could test Jimi Hendrix they would find out his supposed Cherokee grandmother was actually bi-racial.

Black folks have been telling that "Indian in my family" lie for many generations. Sometimes its true but more often, that light-skinned black person was ashamed to be associated with unjust white people and made up an Indian grandmother story. Much better to be associated with a warrior than a be product of miscegenation, rape or something worse. Sometimes a black woman with a bi-racial child was labeled a "bad" woman or prostitute.

Skip Gates is actually bringing blacks and whites together as rightful families. As both sides try to distance themselves from the other, he tells the truth. Gates shares Irish ancestry with officer Crowley as well. Both related to Niall of the Nine Hostages. I thought that was a hilarious coincidence.

I'm from the caribbean and recently learned that i have irish ancestry and not because the irish owned slaves but because the irish was brought to the caribbean (im from barbados) as slaves.

During the 1600 into the early 1700's over 500,000 irish were enslaved by the english and shipped to the caribbean especially barbados .

I love people finally realizing that so many Americans have more complex ancestry than most people would expect. And that is a wonderful thing. As amusing as it seems, the reality that a famous black US boxer is also part Irish - and proud of it - is fabulous. And it is wonderful that the Irish side of his family embraces him , too.

The world has changed, but we are hardly in a post racial society. Someday, perhaps, this will not be such big news. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, it isn't the end of racism. It isn't even the beginning of the end. But it may be the end of the beginning...

We African-Americans are mixed mostly by force. One of the worst atrocities of slavery was the sexual brutalization of our women. A slave women on many occasions would rather smother her new born baby girl than allow her to live as a slave and face the continuous rapes and other barbarities. The reason Ali embraced his Irish ancestry is simply because Grady was apparently an honorable man.

In the hierarchy of early Caucasian immigrants, Irish were on low rung, brought in as indentured servants and later placed out in the fields to oversee slaves. Hence there was occasion of mixing between slaves and the Irish. Unfortunately the context under which this mixing happened varied greatly - sometimes it was consensual, with recognized marriages even. I suspect that when slavery was later virtually codified in the United States to be exclusively for those of dark skin , the dynamics likely changed such that the brutalization prevailed.

Some of us may be mixed by force but in many cases, there was a torrid and forbidden love affair (white male/black female) or the white man simply lived with his black woman and no one could do anything about it. Sometimes he kept two families because it was proper for him to have a white wife in public but his heart belonged to a black woman he was forbidden to be with the same way. Some of it is really heartbreaking to read about. The Loving Case, I think, was an example of interracial couples putting their foot down and saying they've had enough.

However, a black man trying to pull that same thing back in those days? Ha! It wouldn't go over so well with the neighbors. He'd get punished severely and worse.

Absolutely true. But I do not think a man like Ali would be celebrating that kind of horror.

Yes, there were atrocities of all sorts committed against people of color. And some are still being committed today. BUT there was and is also persons of honor who could be proud ancestors. Given Ali's life-long beliefs, that is the only way that man would be celebrating that part of his ancestry.

Fortunately for us all, we are beginning to see what a post-racial America could look like, and old attitudes are starting to change. In my old hometown, the head of the Polish-American Society is an Afro-Polish Vietnam vet, who faced discrimination from both sides, but is now working to make the entire community a better place.

We are not there yet, but the slow, painful progress is starting to show in the attitudes of people - always the last things to change.

Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.

Muhammad Ali was my favorite fighter of all time. I used to love to watch him with Howard Cosell, It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it now.

My favorite memory of the two is Ali's attempt to pull Cosell's toupee off...

The key question is... did the irish marry into your family or was someone in your family raped. Unfortunately, most African-American women were raped. Notice also that it is not the black men marrying white women back then. The black men were being lynched and burned in Kentucky and Missouri where my family is from.

A heartwarming story, brought tears to my eyes. Really nice to see the people of Ennis accepting him as one of them, albeit far removed.

A great-grandfather is not so far removed. My own greats were still alive when I was born.

Agreed, that's pretty close in relation. I always forget how young the U.S. is in age and the fact that the days of slavery wasn't so long ago.

I hope this would make people realize that human differences are only skin deep. But, haplessly, that's not gonna be the case. It's always gonna be "we versus them".

If people want to be superior, get educated. it's not about your skin color but how well educated and intelligent you are.

I think that's changing - after all the "unelectable Obama" became president.
True not everyone will be able to see beyond appearances; just the educated and those of us that can see us and no them.

Not an exact quote but paraphrasing:
"Them the liberals, them the conservatives, them the democrats, them the republicans...we have themed ourselves to death - we need to say us!" - Bill Clinton 1992 campaign speech I've always loved

It is mighty fun how and now some Europeans what so-called famous African Americans to be connected to them. If any person of African decent(Black) have other DNA make up it is returning from which it originated. Read up on the Mitochondrial DNA and it's origin. It originated with dark African people. Ali does not have the Irish in him the Irish have African in them.

You are putting up a strawman, the only people who DON'T believe we all came from Africa are the people who don't believe in evolution. I believe it's a bit easier for My Ali to trace his family back 3 to 4 generations than THOUSANDS of years back. But thanks for peeing on his party!

nice.....race as we speak does not really exist, its just a mix of people with different haplogroups living around the world, with certain mutations forming a majority at certain parts. The atlas of human journey shows the journey people took and spread around the world.
