Naomi Campbell Wears Fur: Models Sable After Appearing In PETA Ad (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/17/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:55 PM ET

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has started a campaign to be the face of the luxury furrier Dennis Basso. While wearing and modeling fur is controversial in general, Naomi's ads raise even more eyebrows since she appeared in the iconic ad campaign for PETA, "I'd rather go naked than wear fur."

The original ad with fellow supermodels in 1994:

Quick Poll

What do you think of Naomi Campbell's fur ads?

Despicable!

I bet a lot of those models don't really care about fur, they just do it for the publicity.

What's the big deal about fur anyway? She looks good in the ads.

Ads are just a gig....don't mean nothin. Besides that money was gone along time ago.
Besides the "furs" are actually the skins of her domestic help...so see, it's all good...

why do people always make such a big deal of celebrities wearing fur and not wearing leather or eating meat, for example. I mean if we go around killing cattle for food, why is it so immoral to wear fur? And yeah, people change over time. So did the fur industry. They became more transparent and even launched the OA label (the responsible fur label) a few years back to assure consumers they are making responsible choice when buying fur. And I think Naomi looks really beautiful in these photos btw

I guess Naomi discovered that she didn't have to wear fur or be naked. She could actually be naked under her fur.

Naomi Campbell, as beautiful and successful as she is, still needs to make a buck to maintain her lifestyle (to include her hair habit - black hair care will set you back some and I speak from experience). As a black woman, I can only imagine how scary it must be to know that you are working on borrowed time as a model. I cannot blame her for making the 180 degree reversal. We are in a recession, aren't we? Besides, the models out here that talk about how wrong she is for reversing her stance have no idea what it is like to be a black model in the industry. I mean black, not just high, if you catch my drift.

Another article at Huff-Po says people are cutting their own hair to save during a recession. Maybe they can take those savings and buy a fur.

So black hair care will bankrupt a millionaire?

Yes black models face difficutlies, but Ms. Campbell is one of the most successful models...ever.

Your post is nonsensical.

I agree that black hair care would not bankrupt a millionaire but I'm not too sure about millionaire status at this point - Ms. Campbell has had quite a few lawsuits settled and some actually prosecuted. I wouldn't shake a stick at the amount she's had to pay lawyers and claimants.

The fact is, black or not, she is getting pretty long in the tooth and there are a lot of young models hot at her heels. I don't know that she can demand as much as she has in her heyday. Good luck to her.

How so? I pay $1500 to get my hair done for quality service and routine maintenance...and I'm not a model.

Naomi is a perfect choice for a PETA ad. She is a superficial, self-centered hypocrite only interested in publicity--just like Ingird Newkirk.

As if that Kardashian sister doesn't plant her behind on leather seats. Who does PETA think they are kidding?

Obviously you can't. I can and can actually afford one.

Personally I do not wear fur for vanity, but I do not judge Naomi's choice in campaigns. Working as a model is very difficult and competitive and frankly work is work. Many PETA models have worn fur in editorials or catwalk shows at some point of their careers. They must abide by contracts, regardless of their personal views. It is wonderful to see all the iconic supermodels back in campaigns again, and they are all over 35. Nice to see diversity of so called youth.

Doing a "campaign" for PETA is not simply "work"... It is a very personal statement she is making about who she is and WHAT she stands for. And as lulumay (on this thread) points out, Naomi Campbell is well beyond a point in her career where she cannot not afford to CHOOSE the clients she works for.

Clearly, from her recent choice in "campaigns" we can only surmise that she is a HYPOCRITE and has demonstrated a serious lack of principal.
05:39 PM on 09/01/2009
She did the PETA ad because she's superficial and it would have seemed like the "in" thing to do.

But that aside, there's nothing wrong with wearing fur.

Isn't that why all these celebs do those silly PETA ads?

***Isn't that why all these celebs do those silly PETA ads?***

Yep.

It's a dumb slogan too.

"I'd rather go naked than wear fur"

Why? What's stopping them from wearing....say....cotton?

Some of you sound like public relations for the fur industry which is gratefully skidding downward. That there is even a moment when wearing fur is an alternative to a variable of other more attractive choices just shows that humanity is a putrid ignorant mass of insensitive egotists. That Naomi Campbell is turning on her former stand of anti fur just shows her lack of judgment and commitment to anything. Gorgeous yes, empty and rotting, yes. There is no rational reason to wear fur. There is no rational reason to kill a beautiful, healthy animal for its pelt which does nothing for those who wear it other than to sooth and expand their sick self image. What a waste you all are.

There is a rational reason to kill animals for their pelt.

And that is to wear their pelt.

And please, spare me the "beautiful" argument.

So if the animal was ugly, killing it would be OK right?

That skin, those lips, those legs; dayum she is fine.

And so were the sables before they were slaughtered.

I thinks she breathtaking. And can you believe she is still in demand when most of the "super models" are long gone.
04:15 PM on 09/01/2009
so what's new? she is doing this to make money in a industry that is dying in the credit crisis .
04:07 PM on 09/01/2009
She's a celebrity, which means she is a hypocrite, almost by definition. Is anyone surprised?
