I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Brownie, a 4-year-old cat who has drifted away from his home, returned to the delight but then horror of his owners. Glad to have him back, they were in turn horrified that he had a 13-inch arrow stuck through his head. Luckily the arrow had only skimmed the skull and the little guy is expected to make a full recovery.

The local Humane Associate in Bloomington, Indiana is offering a $500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of whoever did this.

my mom's long-time boyfriend used to shoot alley cats all the time because they would crawl under his truck for heat and pee all over the place. I liked cats so I had a strange "disassociative" feeling every time he would kill a cat right in front of me. I didn't cry though when he did it (this was around the age of 8 or so) because he would hit me if I cried and call me names. he would paralyze them with a bb pellet and break their necks. He liked John Wayne and Ronald Reagan.

strange that I live in a house with 7 cats now. I like kittens.

This incident is entirely the cat owner's responsibility.
I simply cannot understand why cat owners feel that everyone in their neighborhood has to live with their cat. I don't suppose that cat owners would appreciate the neighbor's dog crapping on their yard every day and getting into their garbage and killing birds around their feeders, etc.
If you love your cat, keep it home where it belongs. just as you expect dog owners to do.

"This incident is entirely the cat owner's responsibility."

Sorry, can't buy that -- cruelty to animals is inexcusable under any circumstances.

I do, however, agree that responsible cat owners do not let their cats roam at large. It's dangerous for the cat, and cat predation takes a terrible toll on wild birds. Cats should be required to be licensed and kept on a leash when outside, just as dogs are.

This incident is NOT entirely the cat owner's responsibility. If a human being trespasses on someone else's property, mistakenly or on purpose, does that give the property owner the right to shoot him in the head with a 13-inch arrow?

My mom's cat is a housecat. She somehow got out when a screen door was left open ONE TIME, walked into a neighbor's yard, and was promptly hit by a dart fired by the neighbor from inside his house. She came back to our yard, and to our horror, the dart was sticking out of her side. My mom called the police, because we didn't know what had happened.

Thankfully it turned out to have caused only a superficial injury, and she was pretty much unphased by the entire incident. The neighbor also apologized, claiming that he did not know it was our cat, and that he had acted impulsively.

My point is, please don't be so judgmental of pet owners. Of course they bear responsibility for the protection of their pets, and for keeping them from becoming a nuisance, but their is never an excuse for animal cruelty. If you believe there is that's really scary.

I feel the same way about children. They should be kept inside their owners house, or just be shot. If something happens to them, 'oh well'... it was the parents responsibility. Sound a bit ridiculous? Yeah... so do you.

People getting outraged over random incidents of cruelty to animals make me laugh. Where do you think your tasty meat is coming from? What do you think about factory farms where animals are tortured every day?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:20 AM on 09/06/2009

there is a moral difference to most americans in regards to the death or treatment of a cow (seen as food) compared to that of a cat (seen as a childhood friend or part of your family).

This is pretty well engrained in the majority of people, making this persons action against a cat pretty deviant of societies norms. Thus making them an a**hole , who I would probably punch in the face.

like it or not, our bodies are designed to eat, among other things, meat. if, like coes, we had four stomachs we could eat grass and survive on the cellulose - but we don't and can't. opposite is true with cows, they can't digest meat like, say, a cat can. personal ideologies aside, eating meat, for some species, is as natural a process as is rain.

try putting a cat on a vegan diet - cat's too live on the by-products of the tortured feed-lot animals. (or they hunt and kill-for-meat) quite a quandry - feeding slaughtered cows to cats for human companionship.

i agree that factory farms are deplorable. being one who has personally (and respectfully) killed-to-eat, i'd rather rather be the "murderer" than hire assisin's to do the dirty-work then offer it up in a tidy styrofoam and cellophane package, complete with blood-soaked daiper. where do people think it comes from, the meat-fairy, the cat-food fairy?

and to you vegetarians, who says animals have a preferential right-to-life over plants anyway. that's species-ism. something has to die for us to live, don't ya know...

People always conflate mistreating animals with killing them. They are not the same thing, at least they weren't before agribusiness got so big. Here's an analogy: killing people (death penalty) is legal in some states, but torture is not (wasn't).

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:40 PM on 09/06/2009

Those animals that are being slaughtered are RAISED to be food. I don't necessarily agree with how they are treated but it IS NOT the same as shooting a domesticated pet in the head with an arrow.

You either laugh too easily or have a sick sense of humour. Its disturbing when cruelty is done to an animal there are alawys people who say what about the cruelty to children women other animals. WHAT ABOUT IT. LETS STOP BEING CRUEL PERIOD.

Poor kitty cat. I seriously hope that this was some kind of accidental shooting and not intentional.

Guys lets be rational here. This report was definitely made to incite anger towards the person that did this. I don't like what I see either but I'd like to share my thoughts.

We don't know the whole story. Was this cat an indoor cat or an outdoor one? I grew up in southern Indiana and I know how things can get. Maybe this cat was a constant intruder on the property of a neighbor who had enough? I know for sure that a child couldn't make that kind of shot with a bow and arrow. It also was probably not a hunter because to be able to find the head of your target to shoot, you have to have good enough vision to identify what you are shooting. If it had been a bullet wound I could see how it may have been a hunter. What I believe happened (this is just a theory) was that this cat was trespassing on a neighbors property and was acting strange. It may have been in heat or it may just have seemed strange. The owner of the arrow may have thought that this animal had rabies or any other number of diseases and was trying to protect their property, children, self,etc...

I think that what happened to this cat is sad and I really feel for the owners, having owned many cats and dogs myself. I just want everyone to realize that the situation may be different than what it appears.

If a cat is trespassing and 'acting strange" then the thing to do is call Animal Control, not shoot it with a crossbow bolt which is brutally cruel.

The incident happened in an area here in Bloomington where my supervisor rides his bike... he says there are definitely some redneck types living on that road.

Some sick person just thought noone would find out about their sadictic act. Surprise... not only did people find out, but there are consequneces to animal abuse.

Bloomington, and Monroe County at large, has a very responsive Animal Control. If someone was bothered by the cat, they should have called that office.

Twisted people who demonize cats to excuse their acting out on somethingh vulnerable will face the consequences.

First of all, I was stating OPINION about the rash comments on this article and about what happened in general. Secondly I was NOT saying what they SHOULD have done or that what they did was morally right in any manner. (Lastly, saying that some "redneck types" live there is very mature. Let us hold fast to our stereotypes. /sarcasm)

If the OWNERS were responsible this would not have happened.

I don't blame anybody for shooting a cat on their property.

Cats can be quite destructive and I'll be da*mmed if I will let that happen.

I have a right to protect my property and it does not end because some lo*ser is unwilling to control his animal.

I'm not calling 911 because of a cat ,

I pretty much can guarantee this cat will not go back to the incident area.

And can go from being civilized to psychotically cruel in a nano second. Witness on YOu Tube tamils being shot to death in Sri Lanka and the people doing the killing laughing at the bodies as they twitch. I live in Toronto and there was a 'man' who captured a racoon on his property by trapping it in a box with spikes that went through its entire body. It died an agonizing death. Yup we are the cruelist creatures on the planet.

This may have been an accident if you look at the angle of the arrow, the poor kitty may have been in a tree at the wrong time. It is chilling to think that it could just a easily been a child. What amazes me is that someone would be shooting arrows outside of an archery range. What happened to common sense?

If it wasn't an accident, then someone out there is a sadistic monster!
