Be very aware of the rising incidence of critters in second-hand stores. I've gotten used to laundering things before they come into the house, after I had a bed-bug infestation traceable to a local thrift store (where I still shop, but more carefully). Sadly, I no longer bring home second-hand upholstered items, and used mattresses are off the market with me.

Goodwill also has a pretty good online auction at shopgoodwill dot com. The software is great, but you sometimes have to wade through some dense clerks during the shipping process.

In the wake of the recent mainstream discovery of thrift stores, I’ve seen countless blogs write tips. Some are half-hearted, some are silly. Wash the clothes? Duh!

The Thrifty Chicks is a blog dedicated to building a robust reuse and repurpose market. We know thrift. Visit our site at http://thethriftychicks.blogspot.com/ and scroll down a bit. On the left there is a small table of contents titled, “How to Thrift.” This includes several posts from guiding one to understand the business of thrift (because you cannot approach it from a retail perspective) to specific tasks for navigating the store. The list is a living one so we update it as we learn.

A few paragraphs of tips are not enough to guide one to convert to thrift. Godspeed.
