WASHINGTON — The White House environmental adviser under fire for inflammatory statements made before he joined the administration resigned after what he called a "vicious smear campaign against me."

Van Jones "understood that he was going to get in the way" of President Barack Obama's agenda, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Sunday.

The resignation was disclosed without advance notice by the White House in a dead-of-the-night e-mail on a holiday weekend. It came as Obama is working to regain his footing in the contentious health care debate.

Jones, who specialized in environmentally friendly "green jobs" with the White House Council on Environmental Quality, was linked to efforts suggesting a government role in the Sept. 11 attacks and to derogatory comments about Republicans.

Gibbs said Obama did not endorse Van Jones' comments but thanked him for his service.

"What Van Jones decided was that the agenda of this president was bigger than any one individual," Gibbs said on ABC's "This Week.

Recent news reports cited a derogatory comment Jones made in the past about Republicans, and separately, of Jones' name appearing on a petition connected to the events surrounding the Sept. 11 attacks. That 2004 petition had asked for congressional hearings and other investigations into whether high-level government officials had allowed the attacks to occur.

"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in his resignation statement. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."

Obama's top political adviser, David Axelrod, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Jones "showed his commitment to the cause of creating green jobs in this country by removing himself as an issue."

Howard Dean, former head of the Democratic National Committee, told "Fox News Sunday" that he thought Jones "was brought down and I think it's too bad. Washington's a tough place that way, and I think it's a loss for the country."

Dean, a former Vermont government and Democratic presidential candidate, added: "All of us campaigning for office have had people throw clipboards in front of our face and ask us to sign. And he learned the hard way you ought not to do that. But I don't think he really thinks the government had anything to do with causing 9/11."

Jones said he has been "inundated with calls from across the political spectrum urging me to stay and fight." But he said he could not in good conscience ask his colleagues to spend time and energy defending or explaining his past.

Jones said in an earlier statement that he did not agree with the petition's stand on the Sept. 11 attacks and that "it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever."

As for his other comments he made before joining Obama's team, Jones said, "If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize."

Despite his apologies, Republicans demanded Jones quit.

Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana said in a statement, "His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate." Missouri Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond said Congress should investigate Jones's fitness for the job.

Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck repeatedly denounced Jones after a group the adviser co-founded, ColorofChange.org, led an advertising boycott against Beck's show to protest his claim that Obama is a racist.

The president of Beck's media organization, Christopher J. Balfe, said the commentator had begun focusing on Jones' "radical beliefs" on July 16, before the group started taking on Beck.

But James Rucker, the organization's executive director, has said Jones had nothing to do with ColorofChange.org now and didn't even know about the campaign before it started.

Jones, well-known in the environmental movement, was a civil-rights activist in California before shifting his attention to environmental and energy issues. He is known for laying out a broad vision of a green economy. Conservatives have harshly criticized him for having left-wing political views.

Nancy Sutley, who heads the White House environmental council, said Jones "had been a strong voice for creating jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources.'

lets support Mr Jones,
Take to the streets in New York on behalf of the families, first responders and survivors of September 11th and the 80,000 New Yorkers who signed the petition. As the climate ripens and public opinion continues to swing in favor of a new investigation, this is our opportunity to send a message like never before. If we stand together, we can make history.
September 27. 2pm. Battery Park.

I suppose American values according to the right wing means I don't care if your wife dies of breast cancer, or that your child has leukemia, that the medical bills will cost you your home or that your job was outsourced or many other reasons someone might find themselves in a desperate situtation. It is far more important to you that you have yours right now and that your right wing ideology stays in power no matter what. If you would look at the statistics of what the insurance companies have in store for your wallet down the road you might look back and realize just how misguided your values are.

I agree with TaketheCanolis. I don't see anything wrong with signing a petition to call for an investigation to see if the govt. knew about 9/11 prior to the attack. FDR knew about Pearl Harbor before it happened and did nothing to stop it. It was his way of getting the U.S. involved in World War II. Why is it so hard to believe that the Bush Administration would use a similar tactic to start the Iraq War. I wish Jones was bold enough to admit he signed it because he had questions and not because he misread the petition and thought it was only to help 9/11 families. I guess he didn't want to hurt the president's chances of getting health care reform.

Van Jones was the guy that really had me believing Obama was truly committed to make moves in Amerca's energy habits and cultures...and shift us to healthier America in terms of our air quality and pollutants we allow in to our water system...with Jones gone I have heavy doubt about what Washington is ready to do interms of our energy crisis which is so significant in terms of our global environment. Hopefully Jones will be out on the grass roots organizing to get everyday Americans passionately committed to taking on this issue with everyday action...HEALTH CARE is huge but if we keep moving closer and closer to regular climate catastrophies due to our environmental neglect and abuse...what will HEALTH CARE matter then...this issue is a huge part of the puzzle...we truly need minds like Jones to help inspire the hearts and minds of Americans to make this priority.

I find it funny that Conservatives believe that they and ONLY they have American Values. Liberals and Progressives have helped America review and abolish many of the ideals that would be considered Conservative because they were the status quo. Things like Slavery, Women's Suffrage, Women's Rights, Fair wage legislation. These issues would have never been addressed and corrected if not for Liberal and Progressive minded people who saw that the status quo wasn't a reflection of REAL AMERICAN VALUES. This is the "Who's D*%K is bigger" argument isn't it?

Let's have substantive debate about the issues of the day and not fall into the stupidity of "Death panels" or "Killing Grandmothers". I mean really, do people really believe that all Democrats and Liberals want to enact that kind of legislation?

Glenn Beck surely twisted Van Jones' statements to sound evil. I want a new system and agree with Van Jones in this clip from Glenn Beck's show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgkWG4VnOIg

Exactly what does a "Green Jobs Czar" do? How does he create green jobs? I suspect the only jobs he would have created would be some affirmative action appointments on his staff.

I am sure the “Green Jobs Czar” would be as effective creating jobs as the Department of Energy has been in finding alternative energy sources and getting us off oil.

The “Green Jobs Czar” would create jobs as well as the Department of Education has brought up test scores. Thank you Washington. Thank you Barack.

You might want to check your racism at the door. It's apparent you have either a deep seated hatred of black people or an issue with the advancement of anyone who isn't of your race. If you want anyone to take you seriously in this debate, cut out the prejudice.

Green Jobs Czar bullies and extorts from businesses to fund community projects, like paying a bunch of folk $55 an hour to work in a community garden. @CORN handles the finances, like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtTnizEnC1U

President Obama should know that ANY person either elected or appointed should be of American values first. I have read and heard this fanatic Van Jones make statements that should have the Government WATCHING him not Hiring him. I enlisted in the service during the Viet Nam War and came home to voices of hate for our doing our duty to America. Today my elected President hires people with un-American values. I should have died back then so as to not have to watch my country change. Double standards have replaced moral leadership. I listened and applauded as our great nation showed the world that in America all are equal. The truth is Americans should be seen, taxed and remain silent. I must have fallen asleep for many years and missed the battle for America. Please be kind enough to let me know the where an when of the battle fought in SILENCE that America lost. Also if there are any survivors please send help to get me back to the America I was born in, I would hate to die on this now foreign soil.

"American values"?? are what are those exactly? those set by our former President? torture is ok,? blindly follow your leader even if he takes the country into an illegal war and murders millions of innocent people?, American is perfect?
Are those your "American values"?
Moral leadership in this country has not existed for a very long time.

thank you for your thoughtful post Sonny. Many here will pretend not to know what "values" you are writing about but they do know and many here want nothing more than to smash them and replace them with "change we can believe in".

The Republicans have had the WH for 20 of the past 28 years. They have added NOTHING to society, civilization or the human condition - They are now a CULT with a 24/7 means of propaganda where a fanatical rightwing fringe (not unlike the Islamic Religious Fringe) have taken over a political party that used to be the GOP - they are now END OF DAYS, Cultists - with propaganda provided by MURDOCH and FOX - they are "anti-education, anti-history, anti-evolution, anti-science, anti-fact" - they are Holy Rollers, chicken hawks - they love the unborn and love to kill the living - with different views than theirs.

I'm a right leaning Republican. I disagree with many of the positions that Mr. Jones holds. Yet, I'm sorry to see him leave, and I will be praying for him. It's long past time for the gotcha politics to end. I hated it when the left was doing it to Mr. Bush and it's no prettier when my side is doing it.

I did watch a video of Mr. Jones talking about white males and shooting up schools, and I found myself agreeing with his point if not his example. Part of my prayer will be that Mr. Jones can use this adversity to look beyond racial identity politics and use his obvious intellect to work for tolerance.

Best wishes

Thank goodness Van Jones is gone ! I guess my e-mail to the WH worked. It seems to be apparent that a lot of these czars are of questionalbe character and were given these positions as czars to go around the vetting process. Why not just appt them to a cabinet position ? There are plenty of those that are still unfilled (i.e. Social Security) One down...Thirty something more to go !!

Every day I see more and more evidence that Obama is too timid to ever be a good president. He appoints Wall Street hacks like Geithner and Summers, both with Goldman Sachs connections. He introduces bills that are watered down before they make it to Congressional floors. For the stimulus package, he offered tax cuts long before the Republicans and Blue Dogs demanded more tax cuts. For health care, he didn't demand Medicare for all -- then settle for a public option. He instead starts by demanding for a public option -- and will settle for gosh knows what.

This weekend he forces out a lone progressive -- because he had the audacity to demand an investigation for what really happened on 9/11. The 9/11 Commission censored testimony that was damaging to Cheney by Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta. And there is evidence that the Commission's director, Philip Zelikow, interfered with the Commission in order to protect Condeleeza Rice.

Obama fails to learn from Clinton that no Democrat can appease the Republicans. Clinton gave them GATT, NAFTA, welfare "reform," and rescinded the Glass-Steagall regulations of Wall Street. What did the Republicans give in return? Impeachment.
