"This is the most I have ever seen. (Ladybugs) are everywhere, said Jack Anderson, who lives near Green Mountain at 6264 Flagstaff Road. "They are in the garden, in the bushes, on the windows. There might be two or three or four ladybugs on any window in the house."

In the last 12 years or so we have experienced the swarming of ladybugs here in (suburban/ rural) NJ as well.... I don't think there were swarms as dense as that shown in the picture, but yes, I've seen HUNDREDS of ladybugs gathered on patio doors, or on the walls of gazebos, etc.

This has happened several times in the past decade here in Indiana, and let me tell you a couple things about ladybugs.

One, the orange ones, they're jerks. Only the orange ones. Not only will they seek you out and land on you any chance they get, they will then proceed to bite you repeatedly for no other reason than because, well, apparently they just feel like it. I can't explain that one. The red ones, I have never known them to do this. Perhaps they have a better self image because they're more fashionably colored, and don't feel like they have to act out for attention.

Two, they're junkies. They love huffing paint. They love it so much that you can't paint in autumn here, unless you feel like having beetle shells and ladybug-shaped dimples all over your house. One fall when I was a kid, someone in the neighborhood got the bright idea that they were going to paint their garage doors white. They thought, "Hey, this fall weather is just marvelous! I'll get this done in a jiffy." You know what? They regretted it. They regretted it because by the end of the day, their garage doors weren't white. They were polka dot.

In spite of their antics, however, I do have a great appreciation for them. I had no troubles with aphids this year because of them - and a cleaner car, too. A tree full of aphids means honeydew gets on everything.

I wish more people here would appreciate ladybugs. I don't care if they're Asian and they pinch, they're still pretty and they still eat the aphids.
