Cartoonist and illustrator, Sean Kelly, has once again graced us with his work, this time taking on Obama's school-speech foes. He's in good company today.

I think Mr. Kelly could add George W to his list. I seem to recall that he was in a public school classroom when he received word of the 9/11 attacks. But what I don't seem to recall is any anti-Bush outcry over his being there.
01:52 PM on 09/09/2009
Yes! Exactly the point.

Hence, "The Pet Goat."

Thanks! I totally didn't make "The Pet Goat " connection. And I agree, Well done, Mr. Kelly.

Hey let's stop beating around the BUSH,

Let's call it what it is,

the GOP, conservative = Angry white old ignorant southern people with racist and bigoted tendencies.

We if all colors have had nothing but white presidents and you don't see us on the news being this angry about a president even if they were the most horrible president. (BUSH).

Where were all you GOP when BUSH was literrally running this contry into the ground? I'll tell you, you were just sitting there watching him doing it and said NOTHING!!!

So now sit down and shut the hell up!!!

I am white, male, and I tired of seeing all of our presidents white old men. Clinton vs Obama, that was refreshing. Didn't know which one I liked more. Til Clinton started sounding bitter, testy, and was on the attack. She did her best to turn me off of her.

White, Black, Male, Female, Hispanic, Straight, Gay, Asian, Atheist, Muslim, Christian, Jewish shouldn't ever matter. Our president should be the one who is the best person for the job.

The more Obama panders to the Repubs the more I am doubting he was the one. But all those he beat were definately not the one.

Neither my son nor my niece were given the opportunity to watch the President's speech yesterday. They are in grades 1 and 3, respectively. What age groups were going to be watching it? I am curious.

I hope the older kids were able to watch, but we are in the buckle of the belt here, so my doubt in their being given that opportunity is pretty high.

This was a historic event, any parent should be glad that their children can see, be a postive part of history.

This topic should never have been up for debate. The only liberty that I hear the GOP or conservative wingnuts protecting is their right to bear arms. This topic is about freedom of speech, education and goals. This is about being an American. A President, whatever Party affiliation, should speak to American children. The GOP have gone to far this time, and I hope Democrats never forget..

The only thing accomplished during this latest battle was to make America look as foolish We’ve been battling all month, and the result:: we lost our American dignity. The whole world was watching as we put lampshades on our collective heads and danced on our neighbor’s tables. No more the ugly American, it’s wonky dangerous, uneducated and hate filled Americans.

Members of shamelessly congress lied to their constitutes, criticized other nations healthcare, (lied about tTHEM as well), nutty Gun owners were allowed to frighten citizens by bringing automatic weapons to peaceful rallies, other nuts gave voice to a distorted philosophy of the U.S. Constitution, history and the politics of the time.

The voices that were loudest were the voices of hate. The world was watching and America won the title as the NUTTIEST COUNTRY. That good is liberty if the loudest voices drown out progress. It's rule by anger, it's no better than being ruled by a despot.

speaking of the most famous reader of My Pet Goat and classrooms... the President shouldn't bring "intelligent design" in the classroom

Quite a few smart people come from dumb parents. Don't fear the "Idiocracy"ification of our world. Einstein's parents weren't smarter than he was. Just because god feerin' rednecks are multiplying like rabbits doesn't mean they're only having dumb kids. How many of you out there have different politics than your parents. Somehow nature baked smart into the equation. Otherwise, how would we have progressed to where we are now?

I'll bet there were thousands of kids that will look back in 40-50 years like my parents look back fondly at JFK giving them a speech when they were in school. Indoctrination? Yeah, maybe. Striving to educate the citizenry is a form of indoctrination, just like you aren't born loving America. That's indoctrinated into you during your school years, and for the lucky and educated few, you learn why it is that America really is so great.

A few weeks ago John Stewart quipped that the time might come when Obama might want to impeach the people. One woman was interviewed and she was in tears at the prospect of her child being exposed to President Obama's speech. I'm beginning to wonder if Michelle is still proud of this country- I'm beginning to wonder myself.

It was correct for the president to speak to the students today, maybe the adults should have listened as well! You never know what you can learn. What a lot of jibberish over him speaking today! OMG, I even saw a woman on TV crying as she was being interviewed so fearful for her child! I had to go out and run around the block to try to forget the image in my head. I mean really, if the president was really that gosh awful don't they think that someone somewhere in the government would step in ans stop it! How silly can some people be, maybe a childhood thing here, they are still afraid of the bogey-man under their bed!

Restricting the freedom of speech of the President. What have we come to? Sure points to where we're headed. Just imagine if he actually passes the public option. These people are going to lose their feaky-deaky minds.
08:11 PM on 09/08/2009
The point is, Obama is black. And, as long as he has the Audacity to STAY black, these people will hate him and everything he does. What he needs to do is turn white and attack some other nation which did not attack us, and he'll be good to go.

Do you think Lincoln would have been welcome in a classroom in Dixie during his administratiuon...i think not...not in the "solid ( democratic ) south".....which only became the
"solid ( republican ) south " when President Johnson suggested that black people be treated fairly.
And suddenly democrats turned into republicans over night..over race not politics. the southern voter is more racist than political....when it comes to the voting booth.

No time to be writing letters on school time.

Spend more time on learning to reading, writing and arithmetic...
Could include spelling too.

You are lacking a fundamental understanding that our children NEEDS to write and write as much as they can. There are students graduating from high school that are unable to formulate a comprehensive essay. They use their "slang language" and have not mastered the art of communication grammatically on print. The ability to write is powerful. It is the method of which one communicate. If our founding fathers never wrote down the Constitution..there would have been NO actual foundation framework of which to build upon.

There is too much TV programs and videos games that occupies a lot of our children minds. They do not even know how to express themselves and therefore sometimes resorts to violence as a form of communication. They need to write letters, essays, and all kinds of material so that they can learn to think in critical terms of understanding which is lacking greatly in our nation now. We can not even have a civil debate over critical issues that requires adults to engage in a respectful and honest dialogue...and you think that our children do not need to write letters or think? For basically that is exactly what transpires when one writes a letter. It requires reading, writing and spelling. All of the above.
