Ellen DeGeneres JOINING 'American Idol' As 4th Judge

Ellen Idol

LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres is dancing her way into the fourth judge's seat on "American Idol."

Fox announced Wednesday the talk show host and comedian, who admittedly has no formal music experience, just a passion for tunes, will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season. The announcement all but seals the departure of Paula Abdul, the original third judge who announced she was quitting amid a contract dispute in July.

Wednesday's announcement came as a shock to many of the singing competition's fans, who did not expect the Emmy-winning talk show host to fill Abdul's spot. DeGeneres told her talk show audience in an episode scheduled to air Thursday that she had been "dying to tell everyone" and would not abandon her chatfest. Instead, she will have "a day job and a night job."

"The times we're living in," she quipped, "we're all doing that."

Abdul had been replaced by a succession of guest judges across the country as "Idol" started next season's auditions, which will air in January. Among them: Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry and Shania Twain – but not the 51-year-old DeGeneres, who will join the ninth season following the show's tryout rounds.

"Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you," DeGeneres said on her talk show. "I sit at home and I watch it, and I don't have that technical ... I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person."

It won't be DeGeneres' first time in a reality TV judge's seat – or on "Idol." She served as a guest judge earlier this summer on "So You Think You Can Dance," critiquing the dancing competition's top eight finalists. In 2007, she was the co-host of "Idol Gives Back," the singing contest's charity event. She returned the next year in a pre-taped segment.

DeGeneres' has enjoyed a successful reign as the host of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" for the past six years, although her four-year streak as the talk show host Daytime Emmy winner ended this year when Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters from ABC's "The View" were awarded the prize for the first time.

"Beyond her incredible sense of humor and love of music, she brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable," said "Idol" executive producer and FremantleMedia North America CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz in a statement. "She is one of America's foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team."

With the four judges' seats now filled, it's highly unlikely Abdul will return to her post on "Idol." Known for her sugary sweet but often obscure evaluations, Abdul had served as judge alongside Cowell and Jackson since the show's debut in 2002. Producers attempted to shake up the franchise last season by adding songwriter DioGuardi as a fourth judge.

Since departing "Idol," Abdul has gone diva, filming a cameo for Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva" as a gavel-banging, glammed-up version of herself and signing on to host the live "VH1 Divas" concert Sept. 17. Abdul has yet to announce a steady job to replace her role on the Fox singing contest, but she told TV Guide last week she'd like to host a talk show.

I don't watch her show regularly, but I've seen it a couple of times. I like Ellen ok. She seems nice. As a judge on AI, tho'?????? This is another one of a growing list of "What were they thinking?" I think the producers on AI are on drugs or something. All the mess last season, plus the new judge, Kara, who is beyond annoying, the crazy zigzag format changes and now this? She is not a musician, singer or song writer. If all she is bringing to the competition is some jokes and "everyman's" opinion, thanks, but I don't need Ellen or anyone else to make up my mind for me or give me feedback on what I'm thinking about the talent.

I think Ellen was chosen first, because she is a comedian. They must feel like she might bring some of Paula's "craziness" to American Idol with her jokes and witty remarks. Second, I think they want someone who could serve as an everyman/everywoman on the show, so they picked someone with little to no technical expertise in music or the music industry.

Yeah, plus she's a friend of Simon Cowell's and Simon Fuller's. I think they hatched this whole thing months ago. They were determined to torpedo Paula Abdul and it wasn't about the money. They have to being paying Ellen tons more than what they were paying Paula.

I guess we won't be seeing any judge flirtations in coming seasons. Simon sure won't be flirting with any of the remaining judges - unless he suddenly takes a shine to Randy Jackson. LOL!

Who is Kara DioGuardi except they named an airport after her?

So.....can someone tell me in what way this woman is qualified to judge others on their singing skills?

She's at least as qualified as Simon Cowell.

Honestly, this is American Idol, not The Good Taste in Quality Music Show. Anyone who can tolerate corporate pop is qualified.

Oh, this'll be good for her. I just hope she plays it cool and doesn't try and steal the microphone like David Hasslehoff does on 'America's Got Talent'. He needs to tone it down. ( Good show, I was so impressed with last years winner. They won a million dollars and a Las Vegas show run. Wow. That's nice America. I watched for the first time last night. Very neat! It amazes me how talent goes on forever., )

the screwed up by letting Abdul go, and they choose her because Ellen is going to bring her tv viewing audience to American Idol, that's all it is, is a power play and strategy.

Two straight judges and two gay judges. Perfect balance now.

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would think Ellen is not well suited for a chair at the judges desk... she well represents the people who buy music. She's smart enough to say things like "Yo Dog", "You had my heart" and "Totally dreadful", so what's all the fuss about? She's perfect. Anyone who disagrees is only admitting their vote for the winner isn't worthy of counting.

Well, I love Ellen Denegeres. This does seem like we're all being punked, though. It may turn out to be a brilliant move because I do think people who have lost interest in Idol may tune in just to see what she does. I think it will change the entire tenor of the show, though. I don't watch Idol anymore and haven't for several years now. I doubt this will make me go back, but I'll look for clips on the internet, certainly. I think Idol may just be in its twilight years.

I hope this a joke. Ya she dances on her show and likes music ...but come on ... With all the music talent they have out there .Why pick her ? Let her do her Ellen show. Not judge on American Idol. I hope Paula comes back . Won't be the same without her.

I won't watch either, but I'm hoping that Ellen will be the armchair quarterback just like all the other regular folks who do watch the show. She can be the voice of the American public. After all, its supposed to be a show where the public picks the winner, and not the "professional" judges like Simon and Randy.

Not that the votes of the people actually count...

Ellen is a fantastic choice for Idol. Those judges don't really 'judge' anything. At least now it will be an enjoyable FUNNY show with Ellen.

Great FUN! The judges give opinions, they don't actually JUDGE anything, the PEOPLE do with their votes!
