President Obama related a moving letter that the late Senator Ted Kennedy wrote to him regarding the importance that health care reform has to the morality of our nation. Kennedy had asked that the letter be made public in the event of his death.

Watch Obama discuss the letter during his speech. Scroll down underneath the video player for the full text of the letter, released by the White House.

WATCH:

May 12, 2009

Dear Mr. President,

I wanted to write a few final words to you to express my gratitude for your repeated personal kindnesses to me - and one last time, to salute your leadership in giving our country back its future and its truth.

Story continues below

On a personal level, you and Michelle reached out to Vicki, to our family and me in so many different ways. You helped to make these difficult months a happy time in my life.

You also made it a time of hope for me and for our country.

When I thought of all the years, all the battles, and all the memories of my long public life, I felt confident in these closing days that while I will not be there when it happens, you will be the President who at long last signs into law the health care reform that is the great unfinished business of our society. For me, this cause stretched across decades; it has been disappointed, but never finally defeated. It was the cause of my life. And in the past year, the prospect of victory sustained me-and the work of achieving it summoned my energy and determination.

There will be struggles - there always have been - and they are already underway again. But as we moved forward in these months, I learned that you will not yield to calls to retreat - that you will stay with the cause until it is won. I saw your conviction that the time is now and witnessed your unwavering commitment and understanding that health care is a decisive issue for our future prosperity. But you have also reminded all of us that it concerns more than material things; that what we face is above all a moral issue; that at stake are not just the details of policy, but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country.

And so because of your vision and resolve, I came to believe that soon, very soon, affordable health coverage will be available to all, in an America where the state of a family's health will never again depend on the amount of a family's wealth. And while I will not see the victory, I was able to look forward and know that we will - yes, we will - fulfill the promise of health care in America as a right and not a privilege.

In closing, let me say again how proud I was to be part of your campaign- and proud as well to play a part in the early months of a new era of high purpose and achievement. I entered public life with a young President who inspired a generation and the world. It gives me great hope that as I leave, another young President inspires another generation and once more on America's behalf inspires the entire world.

So, I wrote this to thank you one last time as a friend- and to stand with you one last time for change and the America we can become.

At the Denver Convention where you were nominated, I said the dream lives on.

And I finished this letter with unshakable faith that the dream will be fulfilled for this generation, and preserved and enlarged for generations to come.

With deep respect and abiding affection,

[Ted]

Sen. Kennedy was one of the good guys. I Often wondered what all his brothers would have accomplished.

Thanks, "Uncle Teddy" for this beautiful message.

Your years of pushing for this legislation have been an inspiration for all of us "workers of the world".

Thanks for standing up for us when we had nowhere to turn.

I love Ted Kennedy. It's a real shame that more people with the ability to change things for the better (money, family influence, etc.) do not have that sense that the Kennedys had that those advantages give you a responsibility to try to better things for everyone. I hope we can at least get this done now, even if he didn't get to see it.

You Liberals just amaze me w your analysis of Obama's Health Care speech last night!!!!!
Today every poll I have seen is just the opposite,92% against his reform idea.
so that tells me he was not successful.
Some bill will be passed but it will not be what Obama wants.
Obama talking has not convinced anyone w common sense especially senior citizens.
Health needs to be reformed no doubt but not this approach.

You just have to look at polls other than Faux News.

This was supposed to be about Ted Kennedy's letter. What a great selfless man, he was, but I can see that you have obviously bought into the hype and propoganda that the phony "news" outlets, who have a stake in Obama's failure, have produced. The polls are manipulated to say whatever the issuer of them want. "Paper will lie still to have anything written on it." Wake up and turn off the TV.

You're full of it, pal. The only polls spewing that garbage are the fabricated ones, paid for by corporations. Eat it.

Which polls are you citing? I notice you declined to name them.

It's not even in consideration. Don't waste your breath (or your fingertips) because it isn't going to happen right now. But this is just the beginning. Reform sometimes happens in small steps. It's time to take the first step. More will follow.

For those of us who have had serious illness fall upon us or our family re the need for health care reform. Though I had health coverage for the surgery I had earlier this year and I already had met my out of pocket costs I was requested within 24 hours of surgery to make a payment. I was under meds and had an open wound. This did not stop the bureaucrat visiting my hospital room and demand a $300.00 payment. This is the hospital and the insurance company standing between me and my doctor, my care. What do you think these bureaucrats are doing to those who do not have coverage? Do we stand on the side of reform or same old same old. I for one truly believe that reform is the only way to insure quality health care for all Americans which is necessary for us to compete in the 21st century as an economic power.

Beautiful letter. Brought tears to my eyes. Listen up America! We must do what is morally right and turn our backs on the bid business companies who are trying to undermine progress and control the health care system. Thank you Senator Kennedy!

Thank you, Ted, for conveying your gratitude and your respect to the President.
I feel so sorry that you are not here to witness health care reform being signed into law. But I am sure you stay somewhere close to the planet til it is done.
And after that, Rest in peace dear Ted. And thank you for your work all these years!

How many more letters does Ted Kennedy actually have? He slipped one to the Pope, but it didn't make any difference. I am amazed that Obama actually thinks that millions of Americans are going to be influenced by referencing anything to Ted Kennedy. Especially in a positive way.

Eleanor, health care reform was the cause of Ted Kennedy's life. So, it makes sense to read it, I suppose.

Oh wait -- you're a troll. Nevermind.

I respect that the man can use semicolons appropriately.

Health care is not a right, but we should still have universal health care. It's still the proper thing to do, even though it isn't a right in the same way as our other constitutional rights.

Rights are secured by the force of societal institutions and the agreement of the members of that society. Witness the Constitution. Without the existence of this document and the government to enforce it, your rights would purely theoretical. In addition, the last amendment to the Constitution was ratified in 1992. So, clearly, rights are defined by the body politic continuously.

Semicolons rock when used appropriately. Thanks for pointing it out.

I think making healthcare an explicit right will hamper the nimbleness needed for good policy, so it should stay at the statutorial level.

What a very touching letter! I pray that our politicians could set aside all personal agendas and for once do what would be considered the right thing for the country as a whole, not just the democrats or just for the republicans but for everyone!

"Words" are the action of expressing thoughts and emotions. Love, compassion, health care--all words. But what would we DO without them? Give us a break.

And what are you doing to help?

Have you:

1. Contributied time or money?
2. Written your congresspersons and senators?
3. Shared your stories about health care or insurance issues?
4. Supported a candidate that is working for improvements and reform?

Or do you just sit back and nay say?
