In honor of what would have been John F. and Jackie Kennedy's 56th wedding anniversary (September 12th), LIFE.com has publishing rare outtakes of the former first lady. The couple were married for 10 years together before the president's assassination in 1963.

Scroll down for three photos from the gallery. See more photos at LIFE.com. Captions from LIFE.com.

Outfitted for a rainy afternoon at the beach, Jackie kneels down to comfort little Caroline: One hand soothes the girl; the other holds a chic, floral-design headscarf in place. Though disappointed she was unable to accompany John on most of his campaign tour, Jackie was happy to spend most of her time with their daughter. Noted LIFE: "Her scrapbook contains few clippings; one is a convention story headlined 'It's Kennedy!' and another is titled 'Caroline's Turtles Place Second in Pet Show.'"

Inside the small plane, Jackie chats with a reporter (not pictured) during a flight from Hyannis Port to Boston. With her ubiquitous pearls obscured inside the collar of her dress, for once another piece of jewelry -- a chunky bracelet -- takes center stage.

On the morning after her husband was elected the 35th President of the United States, as jubilant family members celebrated back at the Kennedy mansion, eight-months-pregnant Jackie steals a moment of privacy, going for a walk on the beach at Hyannis Port.

Eleanor Roosevelt is still the greatest. She had an intellect and sense of civic duty that dwarfed that of the vapid Jackie.

Good point. I could never figure out Jackie's second husband. All arguments say she married him for $$. Why?

Eleanor Roosevelt is the model, as far as service goes.
Jackie Kennedy is a model, as far as class and decorum goes.

Although, unarguably, Hillary has done the most.

there is no argument whatsoever that hillary did more than eleanor. eleanor even held a full time unpaid job for nearly a year. hillary was basically sidelined after the healthcare debacle. eleanor had four terms to make a difference and she did.

Hillary did more for her corporate clients. Roosevelt did more for society than Hillary ever has or wants to. Hillary is a self-serving neoliberal fraud, like her husband.

i certainly wouldnt call jackie vapid and i would say that with the benefit of an upper crust education and travel that she would have been considered an intellectual. her gifts were different than eleanor roosevelts but no less important.

an incredibly lovely woman---and one of many accomplishments--the White House was turned into a true historical monument under her direction after years of neglect. We were lucky to have her, and lesser for losing her

This all very well characterized by beauty, style, form, and execution, but there is a photo on record of naked Jacqueline Onassis photo found with Andy Warhol's archival material that he had collected during his life.

It is purported that she, after her second husband, Aristotle Socrates Onassis, got a paparazzi to take pictures of her and it landed in the hands of Larry Flynt, who turned it into a poster for his porn magazine, Hustler, Jackie sent an autographed copy – likely as a joke – to Warhol with her remark "For Andy, with enduring affection, Jackie”

That was another, albeit less graceful, profile of Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy.

THE BEAUTY AND UTTER DIGNITY SHE SHOWED WHEN HER HUSBAND WAS KILLED --THAT WAS GRACE INCARNATE!!!

She takes my breath away. I lived in Washington when she was in the White House. Our children were the same age. She was so much in my thoughts in those days. Others on this site mention her smoking. Well, I was the rarity in those days: someone who did not smoke. My four sisters, my brother, my husband, and every single one of my friends and relatives smoked. Ashtrays were all over the house. Believe me, I tried to smoke. I couldn't---I just coughed. Edward R. Murrow was our idol, after all.

Yes, her marriage was not good. She was so 1950s in that. Many of us were in a sisterhood of silenced women with impossible marriages, impossible societal expectations. That does not mean that the meaning went out of life. It was always there.

It's fun to see photos of Jackie Kennedy and remember how she never had a fashion miss, because she just effortlessly knew what worked and when. Audrey Hepburn is another person of that time who had impeccable taste.

She was a beautiful elegant woman that had her issues like every body else that walks this earth. WE have a tendency to look for perfect people and even deceive ourselves that they exist...they didn't then...and they don't now. But then we will continue to pretend that in the quietness of their universe when they are alive or after they gone the way of all flesh...they in fact walked water...but they did not.

Sometimes it's nice to dream & pretend. No one thought they were perfect.

I agree. It's like the Michelle Obama propagandists who tell us over and over that she is attractive and a style icon and say they cry whenever they see the first family. You have to laugh, and remind them that tho' they may seem to walk on water, they don't.

How "elegant" was it that she married a repulsive old man for his money? (Aristotle Onassis) Isn't there a name for that sort of behavior?.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:25 PM on 09/09/2009

well, it was more to protect her children buy accessing privacy and protection away from the united states....
she reporrtedly said "they're killing kennedys" and didnt feel the usa was safe for her children...cant say as i blame her....
maybe ari wasnt gorgeous but at least by all accounts initially he treated her with a great deal of respect...
looks really aren't everything...ari, and later maurice templesman......

He may not have been Brad Pitt LOL but it is said he had charm. She felt that her kids lives were in danger & she needed protection. Many women have married rich men for lesser reasons.

Jackie was a chain smoker, but the press was careful never to show her smoking.

So what's your point?

Perhaps she just wanted to share the information.

Or maybe she wanted to make the point that Jackie, like everyone else, was not the perfect being that many on this thread would have us believe.

And the press never showed that FDR was disabled. It was a different time, where there actually were boundaries that the media never crossed. Such a shame that we live in a viscous time like now where paparazzi can kill you and get away with it.

True, she was a smoker. Sadly, a lot of women smoke to keep weight down. Tragic that this is what contributed to her early death and cheated her children, family and the world of a class act. I recall the magnificent photos of her doing yoga on the Christina and how talented she was in every aspect of her life. She could teach the British Royal family about class and being "royal".

Yes she was a chain smoker but that does not diminish her grace and elegance. She also use to go skinny dipping to the raised eyebrows of others. She had her moments...but then...don't all human beings.

That second photo of her, the photo in the plane, she's gorgeous because she looks so natural and fresh faced. Not all dolled up with professional makeup, a $20,000 hair style and a $150,000 wardrobe like some other political tarts we all know.
