2 Lebanese Rockets Fired Toward Israel

BEIRUT — Two rockets were fired from southern Lebanon into Israel on Friday, prompting Israel to respond with artillery fire, Lebanese security and military officials said.

The exchange, in which no casualties were reported by either side, was the latest in persisting tensions between the two countries. It was the fourth time rockets have been fired from Lebanon into Israel, each time bringing Israeli retaliation.

It was not immediately known who fired the rockets Friday. But radical Palestinian factions in Lebanon have been blamed in the previous barrages this year.

The border has been tense since Israel and the Lebanese Shiite guerrilla group Hezbollah fought a brutal 34-day war in 2006. More than 1,200 people in Lebanon and 160 in Israel died in the conflict. Hezbollah has a large rocket arsenal but is not believed to have used them against Israel since the 2006 fighting. It has denied involvement in previous rocket attacks on Israel.

Michael Williams, the U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon, told reporters in Beirut that the incident "is a very, very serious development and I would like to call on all sides to exercise absolute caution and restraint."

Friday's exchange began when two rockets were fired into Israel from the area of the Lebanese town of Qlaileh, near the port city of Tyre, a Lebanese military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

One of the rockets hit near the northern Israeli town of Nahariya, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. No injuries were reported. Israel's Channel 10 TV showed a telephone pole near a kibbutz not far from the border that was toppled by a rocket.

The Israeli military said it fired artillery at the source of rocket fire. The military "views this incident very severely and we hold the government of Lebanon responsible," a statement said.

At least two Israeli shells hit near Qlaileh, Lebanese security officials said, also speaking on condition of anonymity. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that nine Israeli artillery shells fell near the town, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon, which monitors the border, said it, in cooperation with Lebanese Armed Forces, deployed additional troops in the Qlaileh area to prevent escalation. The force, known as UNIFIL, said in a statement that it had contacted both sides, urging them to exercise "maximum restraint."

Israel and Hezbollah have been increasingly exchanging warnings in recent weeks that they will retaliate against each other if either side sparks hostilities. The tensions come as Lebanese politicians are wrangling over the formation of a new government, which would likely include members of the Hezbollah-led opposition.

Israel has said that if Hezbollah is part of the Cabinet, it would hold the Lebanese government directly responsible for any attack by the guerrillas.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV reported on the exchange, but did not make any claim of responsibility.

The last exchange, blamed on Palestinian militants, across the border came in February. Palestinian militants also fired rockets across the border twice in January, during Israel's offensive on Gaza against the militant Palestinian Hamas.

Labeling it as a Lebanese rocket attack is misleading.
H1zbillah is a r0gue group within Lebanon and financed by their 1ranian superiors.

The rocket obviously has not been launched by Lebanese Chr1stians or other rel1g1onists.

The NYTIMES reported TODAY that AT LEAST 2 rockets were fired into Israel...NOT just TWO,as HP reported inaccurately in the headline! No surprise!
02:37 PM on 09/12/2009
I'm pretty sure it was two. You tend to know how many rockets landed its a big thing, unless they were the kind of rocket that does not explode or cause damage in which case they were more firecracker than rocket. If there were three people would know there were three or whatever number there were. Its kinda an exact science. The "at least" language is trying to make the situation out to be worse than it is and if you actually believe it you were duped. We are not talking about rain drops were are talking about what has been described as deadly weapons.

And what was the israeli response? How and why did the conflict start? basic journalism that even a rookie couldn't have overlooked dictates that the readers who aren't already informed would like to know the full answers relative to this story.

Similar like man bites dog - get where I'm coming from?

Not much left to bomb in Gaza these days so we might look to the north.

Oh no, poor Lebanese, can't stop firing rockets...

If those who claim to support the Palestinians want the Israelis to vacate the west bank, wouldn't it make sense to give the Israelis a sense of comfort with the concept of vacating valuable land? They will vacate the West Bank and maybe the Golan when they feel they will not be attacked from both areas. They did conquer them in a defensive war. If you really want peace in the middle east, you might want your Arab buddies to encourage the pro-peace camp in Israel. If you want just another excuse to trash Israel, please move on.

Proposal:Most Palestinain ( so called) supporters argue from a primitive sense of atavistic revenge against Israelis.
And if Palestinians pay a heavy price for it-- so be it-- so they reason.
Proof positive: Zero talk about the total unwillingness of Arabs to create decent conditions for refugees of the 1947, 1967 conflict. Reasoning-- Palestinians must suffer, if Israelis are somehow harmed in the process.

You are making the false assumption that all Arabs or all Arab governments thnk and act alike.

They have used the Palestinians as pawns for their own ends--

But this doesn't excuse the Israeli actions.

In this case, someone is obviously trying to bait Israel into another war.

hopefully this will not happen-- God knows the people of the region have suffered enough.

they will never vacate any occupied territory!

False flag. The rockets were probably fired by Israeli special ops or Lebanese collaborators. Israel's been itching for an excuse to take another lick at Lebanon since they got their butts kicked in 2006 by that third world militia, Hezbollah. This time they'll drive up to the Litani if they can so they can secure that water supply.
07:02 PM on 09/11/2009
Translation: there's absolutely no evidence for anything I'm saying, but who needs facts to bash Israel.
07:34 PM on 09/11/2009
Actually no. Translation: Governments have along history of carrying out or aiding false flag attacks as a pretext for war and other crimes, (Lavon Affair, AJAX, GLADIO, Mukden Reichstag fire, Mainila, Tonkin, Montebello, Beslan, Denver DNC 2008, etc etc,) In the absence of any evidence connecting real Hezbollah to these rockets, you go with historical precedent. You look at the obvious culprits

And maybe you should stop and ask why people "bash Israel". Do you suppose it has to do with its genocide of the Palestinians or maybe it's murder of 1200 Lebanese civilians in 2006?
11:30 PM on 09/11/2009
Pics or it didn't happen.

You mean pics of the government's (racist) 9/11 conspiracy theory about the 19 Arab cave dwellers or it didn't happen??
04:39 PM on 09/11/2009
I know this view in unpopular on Huff Post, but every time I read these articles it's 'militant Palestinian fraction fires rockets at Israel, Israel retaliates'. I haven't seen any reports about Israel attacking first, and to me it looks like neither side wants a full blown conflict, and the ones instigating it are just random pissed off members of these terrorist organizations.

It's too soon to know exactly who started this. But one thing is certain, if we are to achieve peace, then the extremists on both sides have to be collared and we can't let them drive the agenda.

Hopefully, as I said above, neither side will escalate this.

someone's going fishing, don't jump to the bait.

thart so many of you apparently hate Israel so absolutely that you cannot condemn this military attack and even condemn Israel for provoking it reveals your total lack of credibility and good faith. and that's too bad, because there are legitimate criticisms of Israel. But if you refuse to distinquish between the credible and not credible, you'll be ignored as an Israel-hater even when the criticism may be valid. Who does that help? too bad for everyone.

Peace

Look, in this case it seems clear that someone (we don't know who) initiated the attack. Israel DID respond.

Fortunately, no one got hurt on either side and hopefully the incident will pass with no further attacks from either side.

One thing that i would advise Israel is that this may not have been an authorized attack from Hezbollah-- it could be someone acting on their own.

remember, right now there are sensitive negotiations going on in Lebanon on the formation of a new government.

this attack may have been an attempt to affect (negatively) those negotiations.

I'd advise restraint on ALL sides, and hopefully the authorities in Lebanon (such as it is) can apprehend the culprits.

"UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the firing of two missiles into Israel from Lebanon on Friday, saying the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon will investigate the incident. "
