BOSTON — The total value of Harvard's endowment plunged nearly 30 percent in the last fiscal year as the Ivy League institution's portfolio was battered by the worldwide recession, the university's management company said Thursday.

The endowment stood at $26 billion on June 30, after distributions and donations, the university said. It stood at $36.9 billion 12 months earlier, at the close of the previous fiscal year. The decline had already prompted a number of moves by Harvard in recent months, including the elimination of 275 staff jobs and a freeze on salaries.

Harvard Management Company president and CEO Jane Mendillo said its portfolio was impacted by "extreme volatility and financial dysfunction." But she said the long-term performance of the endowment remained strong, with a 5-year annualized return of 6.2 percent and a 10-year return of 8.9 percent.

"In navigating the past year's storm, we developed greater financial flexibility, strengthened our investment team, sharpened out focus and positioned both HMC and the endowment to be robust, steady and, importantly, poised to benefit from growth in the world's economies," Mendillo said in a statement.

HMC said in a report that the decline was in line with other major universities and that even after the decline, Harvard's endowment remains significantly larger than any other university.

Separately, Yale University reported its endowment fell 30.4 percent in June from a year earlier, to $16 billion. Brown University said its endowment declined almost an annual 27 percent in the same month, to $2.04 billion; its investment return fell 23.1 percent.

Harvard's endowment distributed $1.7 billion to the university in fiscal 2009, amounting to more than one-third of the school's operating budget, according to the statement.

The university said the decline in investment performance – excluding donations and distributions – was 27.3 percent, according to Harvard spokesman John Longbrake.

Harvard also said that despite the drop in the endowment, the school remains committed to a financial aid initiative directed toward lower- and middle-income families, with support for undergraduates expected to increase by nearly 7 percent this year.

Mendillo wrote in the report that the market downturn provided an opportunity for a strategic reorientation. She said HMC took actions to "reduce leverage and position ourselves to explore the most attractive investment themes that we foresee emerging from the crisis we have experienced."

She said the portfolio was rebalanced toward undervalued assets and that uncalled capital commitments were decreased by roughly $3 billion.

I heard that they had some initiatives to supply full tuition to certain groups of students. Hope these programs are not cut.

Harvard, Yale, USC, Stanford -- all overpriced universities with nothing but snob appeal going for them.

And even if you attend those high-end institutions of higher learning, one will find that there is an apartheid-like caste system straight out of George Orwell's "Animal Farm," where some are perceived as being more equal than others, where students are treated more like second-class citizens than as equals under the law, and its faculty have the overinflated senses of self-importance and entitlement to go with them.

Most competetive colleges are like that. Are you suggesting statutory equality for students ...pretending that they're all of equal value and aptitude?

Does anyone remember in the movie Hellboy, when they discover the underground nest area of the demon creatures--eggs and hatchlings all over the place ready to go out into the world and wreak havoc with mankind?

That's Harvard.

This more than anything else is why I don't trust Obama anymore.

The moment it became clear he wasn't going to fight to actually clean up the financial industry is the moment it became clear that the hope and change rhetoric was just that, rhetoric. All he cares about is keeping corporate money in dem hands, he doesn't dare anger his corporate sponsors.

the system needs to be overhauled cuz nothing seems to change ...

Is this supposed to make us sympathetic? With less than the INTEREST on that $26 billion, they could give every undergraduate a free ride for all four years.

We only have 26 billion so we need to eliminate staff.

Am I the only one who finds this ridiculous?

$ 37 billions of endowment money slated for real education of real people, albeit for the advancement of the elite class, stashed away in fictitious economy, gambled in financial markets, and eventually channeled into the pockets of big financial corporations in the form of bonuses for their clueless managers. 30% of the money lost forever. 30% of 37 billion is about $ 10 billion. Would it be an exagerration or understatement to claim that one could have built 100 brand new community colleges or 10 brand new universities with just the money that these fools have lost in one year?

in our Oligarchy er... democracy it's important for the upper class to school themselves in style.

I mean who wants EVERYONE to be educated? Dumb people make much better consumers, we can sell them crap they don't need for their vanity easier.

So it's better to keep a few on top who are children of the elite to be guaranteed a higher education and then a few brilliant others will be allowed in with scholarships etc.. to compensate for the dumbness of the "legacies".

Meanwhile the majority of Americans couldn't tell you the simplest geopolitical question about the world they live in and "rule" as the last remaining super power.

I guess people forget that in our golden age, in the turn of the last century US was one of the most educated nations in the world. I guess in the new world order we don't need to be better educated than the rest of the world. We can substitute being the best by just watching Hannity on Fox News (my apologies to News) tell us that we're number one every night. I guess repetition will make it true.

Hey that is a great idea, we can stop tax breaks for essentially political entities (churches) and give the proceeds to Ivy League schools that actually do something to move society forward, taking from the useless and giving to the useful!

Smoke another one. Yale, Harvard and Brown owns some of the most valuable real estate in New England and pay little or no taxes. They will be fine without anymore government help.
