ANAHEIM, California — Avast! Disney says a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film is on the horizon.

Johnny Depp sailed onstage Friday on a pirate ship at the Anaheim Convention Center to help announce the forthcoming installment of Disney's blockbuster film franchise. He was welcomed with a rousing standing ovation.

Depp will reprise his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," slated for summer of 2011. It's the fourth in a series.

Dressed as Sparrow, Depp staggered around the stage and embraced Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook, who announced the news to about 5,000 fans on hand for the D23 Expo, Disney's answer to Comic-Con.

"Has anyone else witnessed a talking frog?" Depp's Sparrow asked the crowd, who had been treated to a performance by the Muppets moments earlier. "Where has the frog gone?"

Cook noted that it was likely time for some rum.

"Sounds good!" Sparrow predictably replied.

In his presentation of upcoming Disney films, Cook also announced that Depp would play Tonto in an upcoming big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger."

The first all-things-Disney convention runs through Sunday.

Johnny Depp was rather popular in Dominica and we hear he loves its wild and undiscovered nature. 360 rivers with natural tarzan swings were fun exercise for the Pirates crew. I am just back from a trip and posted our Travelogue on this wonderful island set back in time and totally unspoiled see http://bit.ly/CENFf http://bit.ly/NatureIslandDominica. Trek to Dominica if you can, it is a delight - for travel planning use http://BookingsDominica.com

LetsGet, right on!! LOVED the first one, it's one of my all time favorites and I have rewatched it many times now. #2 has moments, but just isn't as much fun, and #3 .... let's not go there. The character is such fun that I think they can get the magic back again. but ... am I the only one that thinks ... Tonto??? That IS going to be a parody, right? Because I can't honestly believe they'd do the Lone Ranger straight up in this day and age. As for Johnny's career, the man is doing just fine, and I really hope he gets back to working on Shantaram, which he apparently bought the rights to and which will be awesome if it gets off the ground.

Let's hope the writing can return to the action and the whimsy that made the first one so good. #3? Fuggedabaoudit...

Now there's a pair to draw to. Who is that masked man, anyway? Depp will bring us a sublime Tonto to answer that question.

I wonder if it's based on the pirate ghost novel of the same name by Tim Powers. It is about the Fountain of Youth, which is where the last movie was leading to.

Love Depp as Sparrow, but after the first one, the entertainment value diminished.

I'm waiting for Alice in Wonderland!!

Not me. He's my absolute favorite beside Hook and Morgan's daughter, the splendid Geena Davis. Can't remember her name, but Geena's prirate, through and through. Arrrrgh.

Love JD and would probably watch anything he's in.

The first one was great Entertainment. They got progressively worse, though, so the fourth should be somewhere on par with "Cutthroat Island."

Of course, it'll make about 40 times as much as that piece of crap, and that's what matters.

A while ago movie theaters were forced to say that the butter you thought was on your popcorn was actually a "butter like substance."

The same principle should apply to Pirates and movies like it: How much of what we see are actual sets or locations and how much of it is simply computer generated. I think the answer for Pirates is: a lot.

That would introduce separate classifications when it comes time to handing out the Oscars: movies and computer animations.

Wow... are you the kind of movie viewer who feels that a movie is only worthwhile if it has "redeeming social value"? Good grief... it's a MOVIE... not real life. So you're saying that the upcoming Toy Story 3, the Shrek series, etc., are NOT movies because they have no human acting and the sets aren't real buildings and aren't hand painted? The individuals crafting those movies would beg to differ, as would the voice talents behind them ("Oh, Mr. Hanks... sorry... your voicing of Woody doesn't qualify you as having acted in that non-movie").

Does it matter whether sets are real locations or have been artistically-created by a computer artisan or a matte painting artist? Does that truly diminish the enjoyment of the movie? Sounds like you choose to nit-pick a movie over how it was made versus the entertainment value it provides. That denigrates the hard work of everyone involved.

Isn't it about exclusion? Excluding other media life-forms is like Meryl Streep answering the question, "Why is Fashion so important to this movie?" She control was masterful.

Perhaps the WebAwards will begin to generate to more difinitively prestige to honor the technology/art marriage.

Pirates was shot on location.. mostly, the bahamas, st martins & for part 2 .. the island of dominica..as opposed to dominican republic..

they brought a full size ship etc in st martins.. but true they also shot on a sound stage.. Univeral & Disney to be exact.

but the huge wheel sword fight was shot in location in Dominica.

also for part 2.. shooting in dominica to s hoot the cannibal scene.. amazing! they built roads just so the trucks can reach the hard to get to locations.. like the side on top of a cliff.. to build the cannibal village.. GREAT SETS! but a pain to get to.. the whole operation was like Operation DDAY.. WW2..

one can APPLAUud Gore.. the director and amazing set designers!

what the hell.. there was Johnny.. to look at..

Liked the first one. The sequels are not very good. But Depp sure has a great cash machine here! He must make a killin' on the Merch!

I did, too, but Orlando Bloom stole all of them.

I'd be interested in seeing how well the movie fares without Bloom.

He's gone down hill lately after a few really good films.

Might I suggest some more worthy films for multiple viewing?
Just about anything by the following directors: Kubrick, Spielberg, Scorsese (have you seen "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" lately?), Huston, Ford. For the family Disney's Pinocchio was one of the 20th Century's great masterpieces, all hand drawn of course. Heck, I'll take a second look at PeeWee's Big Adventure over Pirates III!

I hope Johnny Depp doesn't wear his act too thin like Will Ferrell. Audiences already seem to think he did so in Pirates 3, but if the story is good which the last two weren't, maybe he should get another 90 mil. Johnny Depp gotta eat after all.

Normally, I cannot stand sequels and movies that look like they are made just to make money. But Pirates and Sparrow is so enjoyable, I don't care. I welcome another film. I didn't even care too much that the plots got a bit convoluted, I love watching Sparrow too much!

But I do hope they write a clever and entertaining script and not get too carried away. Sparrow does need a Will Turner type to play off of. I wonder who they will get?

From what I've read so far, the only one certain to not return is supposedly Kiera Knightly (Elisabeth Swan) who has announced her decision to not re-play the role. But so far, ony Depp is supposed to be under contract.

Exactly. I freaking love Johnny Depp, I think he's one of the most talented actors in our generation, but the movies are just...pushing it too far.

Not to mention he's working with a lot of less talented actors in those films.

Oh yes, like Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Jonathan Pryce... all second-rate, B-movie actors. You sound llike a 14 year old girl.
