NEW YORK (AP) -- Roger Federer has moved one victory away from his sixth straight U.S. Open title with a 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5 victory over Novak Djokovic.

The world's top-ranked player punctuated the victory Sunday with a winner, hit backward between his legs, to set up match point.

The top-seeded Federer won his 40th straight match at Flushing Meadows and will try to become the first player to win six straight titles at America's Grand Slam since Bill Tilden in the 1920s.

Federer will play No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Rafael Nadal earlier in the day to make his first Grand Slam final.

Federer has now reached the final of 17 of the last 18 Grand Slam tournaments.

A fluke shot--according to Roger, "Practice it, but never make it."--overshadows his solid win.

The shot was a treat to watch, but it should not detract from Federer's solid play.

When Jimmy Connors used it, Bud Collins called it the Belleville Backfire.

We could call this the Roger Restitution or the Federer Firefight

Amazing! Now to put a political spin on this, can Obama make the same, unbelievable, return when it comes to getting health care reform passed?

This was another amazing tennis point. I found a collage of this amazing shot over at a free blog here - http://tennisnoise.wordpress.com/. The craziest part to me was that he hit it under such pressure on such an important shot. He must have been feeling in the zone when he hit it.

Another poster cited the fact that Ille Nastase used to do that shot twice a year. Still, in the US open, it's special!

Amazing shot to say the least.

Serena could learn a lot from watching a Real Champion like Federer play. Or watching Tiger, or even Obama, to learn how to behave graciously in victory and defeat.

She isn't in the league of any of aforementioned people.

57 pages of comments on Serena's antics...5 for an amazing shot made by Federer..no story on Kim Clijster's rarely seen comeback after becoming a mother. Just an observation.

People just love to hit the Williams sisters when they're down. You wouldn't want to rob them of such pleasure, would you?

I love FedEx but he has his work cut out for him in the final against del Potro. I think an upset is brewing.

You may be right. Potro uses his size to leverage the ball in an amazing fashion.

Why are so many totally inoffensive comments being held for moderation? Oh, right, this is HuffPost. There is no rhyme nor reason. Expressions like "great shot" could be lurking in there somewhere.

I seldom post anything anymore, not just because of the "holding" routine, but because it takes so long to even see your own comment or a response.

There has never been any kind of "flow" to the discussions because they're sooooooooooooo afraid of someone being offended.

As if half of what they think is "news" and reported daily is VERY, VERY important and relevant.

All I would say about moderating posts is that on Yahoo Sports, you can say anything and it is a mess of young boys (regardless of age) saying the most obnoxious things to each other. Usually one guy posts the same thing over and over and scads of other guys compete to see how bad they can get with the bathroom insults, ad nauseum. I can't tell you how boring and how disappointing it is to read that kind of blog. This may be stilted but it is at least civil and heaven knows we need to be regulated on civility. What a country we have become.

Personally, I'm glad they moderate the posts. Go to another blog if you want snarky, meanspirited posts. For us longtimers with HUFFPOST - we were very happy until all the wingnuts arrived.........have a nice day.

I was watching the match and I think that is the most I have TiVo'd anything that much. The beauty of the shot was not in it's trickery but in his ability to aim a trick shot for such a winning angle. It's good to see some excitement coming back to Mens Tennis. Rodick was fun to watch but it has been a little boring since the Agassi and Samprass days.

Absolutely. If that had been a forehand winner it would have been beautiful.

A truly amazing shot especially given that it put Federer 0-40 for the match.
BTW, how come no story about Kim Clijsters's amazing comeback win?
