NEW YORK — Oprah Winfrey is opening her talk show's 24th season with a flourish. One week of programs include a Chicago block party with the Black Eyed Peas, an exclusive Whitney Houston interview, her first Dr. Phil visit in seven years and a trip to New York.

It's hard to remember when it seemed more important.

Winfrey is still the queen of daytime television, but the aura of invincibility is gone. The average viewership for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" slipped under 7 million last season, down 7 percent from the year before, according to Nielsen Media Research. One week during the July rerun season, the show had its lowest ratings since its 1985 debut.

There are many possible explanations for the fade, including some over which Winfrey has no control. Ratings declines are common with so many choices and demands on time, particularly during the day. It's even rarer for programs that have been on the air as long as Winfrey's to grow.

And it's not just her. "Live with Regis and Kelly" had the same 7 percent decline last season. Shows with Jerry Springer, Maury Povich and Martha Stewart all had double-digit declines.

Yet Winfrey has also alienated some of her audience, particularly in more conservative parts of the country, said Janice Peck, author of the book "Age of Oprah" and a University of Colorado professor.

By endorsing Barack Obama and campaigning for him, she shucked her apolitical image. Winfrey's book club selection of Eckhart Tolle's New Age religion book "A New Earth" angered some conservative Christians – even though Winfrey's producer said Winfrey was careful not to push Tolle's views on viewers through the television show.

Winfrey's buoyant encouragement of her audience, telling them that their possibilities are limitless, may no longer resonate in tough economic times, Peck said.

The professor said few of her college students talk about Winfrey. They seem more interested in Ellen DeGeneres or Tyra Banks. As the just-named fourth judge for "American Idol," DeGeneres is in line for a burst of attention this year.

"They see Oprah as kind of like who their mom likes," she said. "This is not a good sign for her."

Sheri Salata, executive producer, acknowledges "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is trying to deal with the delicate issue of attracting young viewers while not alienating longtime fans. Notice how the block party carefully followed a performance by the Black Eyed Peas with one by James Taylor.

It was the first time the show actively used social networks, drawing a crowd of 21,000 people in part through alerts on Twitter and Facebook, she said.

Winfrey has aggressively promoted her interview with Houston, telling Mario Lopez during an appearance on "Extra" that it was the best one she has ever done.

Whoa. Mario Lopez? Interviews with Winfrey used to be harder than that to come by.

"You can't be oblivious to the decline in ratings," said Bill Carroll, expert in the syndication market for Katz Television. "Even if it is the dominant show, you have to look at what the value is. I am sure that the people around her are aware of the trends or the perception of trends."

Salata said the show is trying hard to make an impact with the season opening, although it does that every year.

"When you've been on the air for 24 years, our greatest challenge as producers is what are we going to do now that hasn't been done before? How do we take it up a notch?" she said.

Big interview "gets" like Houston or Erin Andrews, the sportscaster who was secretly videotaped nude, are important. The show will also do a "Mad Men" inspired episode where everyone, from the audience to Winfrey, is dressed in early 1960s style, she said.

"We have a real commitment to our viewers to do shows that will make their lives better, and that's not something we take lightly," she said.

It's worth remembering that Winfrey still has the most-watched talk show by a wide margin, more than two million viewers over "Dr. Phil." But downticks in its ratings have an impact beyond her: most stations use her show to give a big audience lead-in to their local news. NBC used to argue that ABC's "World News" got a ratings boost because Winfrey's show was on many ABC stations, even though it was two hours before the network news.

How things go this fall will affect an important decision: Winfrey is signed to do her show through September 2011, and has promised an answer by the end of the year on whether she'll renew her contract.

Oprah is seriously overrated. She comes across as a cold face. I love how she can cry on demand and yet still show no emotion. It's time for her to pack it in and get over herself.

I am not one of the people who dranked the koolaid and bought in to the Church of Oprah.

Hmmmm... she is losing her red-neck contingent? So did Obama. Advice to both: Leave with the dance with the one that brought you.

In other words, Oprah, you have so far stayed "neutral" on the health care debate. I am not feeling you. It seems delusional to ignore this raging cultural battle.

While trying to keep the red-neck audience, Oprah has disappointed her true fellows. Sometimes life requires a person to show up. As the old union song asks, "Which side are you on?"
Oprah has been quoted in Huff Post as feeling that she has already done her political part. Is that what life has taught Oprah? You get to choose your battles? So far that has not worked for me. I am taking care of what is in front of me and my advice to Oprah is that she does the same

GENUINE AND TRUE WINNERS, USUALLY PICK OTHER GENUINE AND TRUE WINNERS TO SUPPORT, COULD THAT BE WHY OPRAH PICKED OBAMA TO SUPPORT AND NOT McCain?
And she must have realized, AS MOST OF US DID, that we had a bunch of loony losers, running the county into a ditch, for the past eight years and it needed a change of direction to avoid total disaster. Many of the loony losers have gone back under their rocks. And now, Obama is having to deal with the aftermath of their loony, reckless, and destructive behavior, that was perpetrated under the guise of
smartness, by people who seldom treat sanity as their their ally and thus, for eight years the inmates ruled the asylum, to the detriment of America and the whole world and ironically, to themselves as well, because, ineluctably, what goes around comes around.

Shouldn't we be leery of disingenuous naysayers, whose motives, more often than not, have been proven to be incredulous and loony, while posing to be smart ? Why would we want to buy loony farmers produce?

Oprah's shtick is getting old. What exactly does anyone expect to see on her show which hasn't already been done many times?

The whole of the United States went political. There is a raging cultural battle and those that ignore it are delusional and irrelevant.

Shrieking and disingenuous naysayers, have had about as much success at dampening the popularity of Oprah as they had against LINCOLN, MLK., ALi, MICHEAL JACKSON.and OBAMA. Disingenuous naysayers have been plying their trade, unsuccessfully, since time immemorial.
And it seems that the harder they work at it, the less successful they are. And that speaks volumes about their credibility.and their apparent lack of veracity.

Looks like her ratings are back up again:

"So far, the push to get her ratings back has paid off, at least in New York.

Ratings for last Thursday's street concert show were up 53 percent over last year.

Her show on Friday -- featuring ESPN reporter Erin Andrews and Lisa Ling -- did even better, up a whopping 73 percent over Winfrey's second show last season."

The Oprah Winfrey Show: What seemed so special based on the dynamicism of its host has somehow lost its way and became as stale as a day-old loaf of Roman Meal bread gathering dust in the aisle of some bakery outlet store.

Sometimes, it's better to leave while you're at the top of your game as opposed to becoming a grinding wheel.

Agreed. I used to tape her because many times she offered interesting interviews. Over the past several years she's designated herself a queen. She has these "goofball experts" that she reaps praise on and therefore lends credibility to their wacky opinions- which is dangerous for the public. She's always bragging about her wealthy lifestyle and never misses an opportunity to mention how wonderful she is.

I find it hilarious that she behaves as if she a queen who warrants accolades from her subjects.
She's like royalty (in her mind) who who wears no clothes, yet all her subjects honor. What a joke.
I've stopped watching her program, since she offers nothing of interest to me.
She's overrated, pompous, and behaves God-like. I'm not surprised other people are seeing the "true side" of her and bailing.

Scramble? Ratings? How about starting with Whitney for the opener! I'm not free to say what I think, b/c I'll be lambasted with superficial judgement calls re. racism, etc. Just listen to the jibe, eloqution, etc. It's entertainment, take it for that. Period! I love Oprah's honesty, that is her real gig, however, she reveals too much for appeal now. Too bad.

Oprah's first show with Whitney Houston was very good.

I'll be there watching the second part.

I believe that Whitney was very honest, albeit, not very articulate.

I wonder that it's never enough for some; no amount of success, no amount of publicity, no amount of fame, is enough. Oprah needs a rethink, a reboot.

Oprah loves people - that's clear from the way she speaks to them. She has a questioning mind. But maybe her show is just a bit stale. It's a launching pad now, instead of the hard hitting show it once was.
Oprah, you're fab. You've done many, many things really well. But maybe it's time to move on from the show format. She has a good brain - she must be able to come up with some ideas for shows that she could do from scratch. That's where she's best. When she's trying to establish; trying to get something new going. When she's being forced to use her mind and skills to do something new.
