Hofstra

Police said on Monday that an 18-year-old female Hofstra University student was raped on campus. According to the Newsday report, four of the five suspects (including another Hofstra student) have been arrested and charged.

More details came out on Tuesday.

The female student was on the grounds of the Hofstra University campus, located at 1000 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, at 3am and was forcibly raped by five men, according to Nassau County's Special Victims Section.

Of the four men arrested, only one man, 21-year-old Rondell Bedward of the Bronx, is a Hofstra student. The other three men were registered guests of Bedward's, a Hofstra University official told PIX News. [...]

Police are searching for the fifth rapist. It is unknown if he, too, is a Hofstra student

The victim's name and condition have not been released, and it is unknown whether she knew her attackers. The case is being handled by local police.

How many of our children and women must die or disappear before we stand up to protect them. It seems to be a problem that will not go away by ignoring . I call upon each and every citizen help.
We outnumber the bad in this country in all but the willingness to get involved. The low life’s count on us not getting together. They operate in the day light as well as in the dark without any apparent fear. They come in all sizes, ages, colors, all incomes, yet no one sees them. We look away and hope they don’t see us. We turn blind and deaf as they prey on our society. We no longer know who our neighbors by name. Fear fills our streets, schools, and public parks for both the young and the old.
I say it is the bad ones who should live in fear. Stand with each other and take back our country. Every person that helps another, helps themselves. Go out and greet your neighbors so a stranger stands out from the crowd. Watch out for all our loved ones so we are no longer prey, we are all stronger then the bad. No bully can face a crowd. No thief can steal what all eyes are on. No child can be harmed if we all listen and see. No woman can be harmed if people are there to render aide. No one old or young can suffer if we all stand together.

Are those 3 of the 5 "alleged" rapist? I'm curious because I haven't seen the word "alleged" used in this article and a defense lawyer will have a field day with that. Rape is hard to prove and all i's and t's should be dotted when prosecuting this case and that includes media reporting.

Republicans are opposed to the use of the word "alleged" because it threatens to ensure actual justice. Thus the Bushit criminal enterprise arrested terrorists. Soo how much easier it i? No taxpayer monies wasted on unncessary trials.

Very sad and disturbing. It's unbelievable what some people do without regard for the consequences of their acts. I hope they get the justice they deserve if they really did this.

Child molesters and rapists -- I strain to have any compassion, and I often fail or fall short.

I find that all my compassion and concern is towards the “innocent”. If the “accused” did the despicable crime -- may their innards burn them alive in guilt and despair. With a miniscule amount of compassion I further state, may they come to see and know the pain they have caused and the filthy vile nature of their wretched existence; this with a minimal (once a rapist perhaps always a rapist) hope that they can be redeemed or changed.

"Find them, try them, fry them."

It's the only cure. . .

No, it's not. Blagoyevich's friend committed suicide becasue he faced 5-8 years in prison. Many would rather die than be in prison for fifty years.

Thus the greater punishment of the twoo is life in prison.

I have never said this in my life, but I hope they have the exact same experience in prison.....repeatedly.

when a group of young men from duke university were accused of a simular offense, the charges were met with considerable scepticism by the conservative media ( racially & politically based scepticism, in my view.) these young men here deserve benefit of the same scepticism, pending their day in court & trial by jury. ( the duke case never was decided by jury, the charges were dismissed by the atty gen - a politician, unfairly in my view.)

Approximately 73% of rape victims know their assailants.

showcasing these cases makes the exception seem normal and scares women about the wrong things:
watch out for the frat boy next to you at the party more than the random black male face.

these cases are reported way more than the more frequent cases.

As long as people belittle crime, we will find individuals who just see that as a nod of approval (or at least, a "looking the other way") with respect their criminal activities, and so carry on with them with ever-increasing audacity. Rape is one such crime, and whilst there may be many documented studies on the phenomenon, the fact remains that it's a crime which, for a number of reasons, has often been perpetrated more on the female sex . I suspect that one reason why people discount the gravity of rape as a crime, is that it's assumed the victim could just "pick themself up" and move on with life...Unfortunately, it's not that easy; the sense of violation ( from what I've heard many victims express) sometimes lasts a life time.Incurable STD's, including aids, are a great possibility, and very often, rapes-turned -murders, might just be the result of unfotunate victims axphixiating, in the course of the unimaginable experience.

The article says, "Police are looking for the fifth rapist." They've already been labeled, and haven't even been found guilty. If they are guilty, they should be punished according to the law . However, if it's anything like the Duke case, they may not even be guilty. In the Duke Lacrosse case all charges were dropped against all the defendants. What happened to the presumption of innocence? Calling anyone a rapist before he has had is day in court is irresponsible reporting.

Agreed. No one will ever know what happened in the Duke case, and there will always be rumors about those boys even though they were never convicted or had a day in court. Many will always think the woman made the whole thing up, and she'll never get a chance to tell her story in court either.

Prosecutors jumping the gun seriously undermines justice for everyone, victims, falsely accused AND real perpetrators who are either never found or never convicted because mob mentality in the press, (fomented by police and DAs) prevents a conviction.

As it turns out, the "victim" has recanted her accusations and is now saying the sex was consensual.
