Joe Wilson

The Plum Line:

If, as expected, many House Republican officials rally behind Joe Wilson for his "you lie" moment during the House debate on Wilson today, they will be putting themselves out of step with rank and file voters in their own party.

Yep, if you look at the relevant numbers buried in this new Gallup poll, you'll see that a majority of Republicans opposes Wilson's outburst. Here's the breakdown of Republican attitudes towards the "you lie" moment:

Even I'm having trouble believing this is true. This revelation is almost contrary to logic. At least it's not a Rasputin(?) Poll.

Was Wilson a plant?

I'm not sure, but tend to no.

What I want to know is why the Republicans are not rebuking him themselves. Who are they afraid of? America for Prosperity? (Dick Armey) Could it be Cheney? Rove? Rush? Dobbs? Limbaugh? Their own shadow?

Why won't these people stand up against those who are stealing their party? They're sure not afraid to stand up against the Democrats....why their own?

The GOP promised him campaign cash, if he would yell that out.
He took one for the team.
As usual with the GOP, party first, country second.

That implies some measure of pre-meditation and smarts to pull that off. I don't think there's any smart people left in the Republican party to pull that off.

There's only one way for these GOPers to get the message - Boehner, Cantor, Wilson, Bachman, Mica etc need a real GOP challenger when they come up for election. The majority of real Republicans aren't about to vote for a Dem, especially when the country is starting to change out of their comfort zone. But if there is a GOP candidate during the primaries that they can get behind because they are sick of what Bush's DC rubber-stampers (those above and more), then there is a chance we can go back to a more civilized government and society. 'Trickle down' isn't just about 'their' economy, it's also about their civics.

What strikes me most ironic about this Wilson is that he totally violated his honor and the Military code for officers. After having served 30 years as an officer in the Guard or Reserves, I can't remember which, you would think the military taught him something. In addition to which it is always the Southerners and especially Republicans who go on and on about respecting the President. Or, is that just when he happens to be a Republican President. Anyway, Wilson must have been one sorry a** military Officer .

I believe that the majority of Republicans feel that there must be a decorum maintained towards the office of President. The time to shout out 'you lie' to the President is certainly not during a Presidential speech before Congress.

I bet they do - just like a majority of South African whites will swear blind that they opposed apartheid and didn't know anyone who was racist.

Soooo if a Democratic Representative yells out to at a Republican president (hopefully there will never be one again) in a joint session, then it will be OK with the Republicans. That is what their vote said!!!!!
And yes it was racist -- he is a Republican from the South!!
