Burt Reynolds Rehab

Burt Reynolds has checked into rehab in West Palm Beach to be treated for an addiction to painkillers, following an allegedly grisly and bizarre incident in late August. He was found semi-conscious and covered in blood in his Hobe Sound, Florida, home, the National Enquirer reports.

"The houseman found Burt lying in a pool of blood. He'd fallen and was badly cut. The houseman drove him to the hospital. But this time, Burt was behaving strangely, and doctors were so concerned about his state of mind that they sent him to the county mental health facility in West Palm Beach," a source told the tabloid.

His admission to rehab may not have been entirely voluntary. The facility allegedly refused to release Reynolds unless he agreed to head straight to rehab.

"He's been increasingly abusing booze and prescription drugs, mainly painkillers. There have been many times recently when he's been completely out of it, and twice in the last few months he's ended up at the ER," the source said. "...Burt wasn't happy about it, but he checked in, went through detox and then joined a regular 30-day rehab program."

Take what you want from the Enquirer's report, but the tabloid has gotten it right before. Reynolds' manager, meanwhile, has put forth a less colorful version of the events that landed the 73-year-old actor in rehab.

"After a recent back surgery, Mr. Reynolds felt like he was going through hell and after a while, realized he was a prisoner of prescription pain pills," he said in a statement to People. "He checked himself into rehab in order to regain control of his life. Mr. Reynolds hopes his story will help others in a similar situation. He hopes they will not try to solve the problem by themselves, but realize that sometimes it is too tough to do on their own and they should seek help, as he did."

God love you Burt...I feel your pain, as I am a TMJ Implant Survivor. I had surgery back in 1984 and my implant failed. The constant battle with the jaw is exhausting to say the least. The TMJ joint is the most complicated joint in the body and never gets rest. Every time you swallow, chew, smile, laugh, speak, yawn(ouch) and kiss etc. With silicone in my head and the government just wishing I was dead, I will continue to fight for the release of the federally sealed documents, which should already have been released. This disaster should never have happen and I am a smoking gun in the whole mess. November is TMJ Awareness Month. Please pray for all TMJ sufferers and for all my friends who were experimented on without our knowledge or consent, and just seeking the truth and answers for our own health problems. Peace be with you Burt...My heart cries for you! Love, Ruthie

Moral of the story is not getting addicted to drugs will save you a lot of time and misery regardless of who you are. Here you have a guy who had everything to live for and decides to try it and finds it's now the only thing in his life. At that point, his past doesn't matter and e only lives to survive to the next day.

Somewhere between his PR guy and the Enquirer story is probably the truth.

Reynold's was released from rehab and after what, a few days? He didn't want to be there to begin with so rehab for him isn't serious.

Burt better be careful, if he continues down this path, the government may be visiting him soon for some "end-of-life" counseling:

Interesting how many of these comments have to do with alcohol instead of pain medication. Maybe that is because most of the readers saw between the lines and could see that our big legal "high" America's Drug of Choice was a disturbing cause of Reynolds' near death?

By itself, if taken as prescribed (as William Burroughs always pointed out) narcotics are not only not detrimental to the body, they can be very sensible coping aides with little side effects-- mentally or physically-- but when taken with alcohol the narcotic undergoes an exponentiation and is very dangerous. Of course, they are very dangerous when used in combination with benzodiazepines as well (i.e Michael Jackson's cocktail that fatal night when the good Doc was attempting to cut his dose of anesthesia), or obviously when taken by the handful.

It amazes me sometimes that we, as a society, suffer so much death, sickness, car wrecks and crime as a result of drugs and alcohol and yet remain absolutely blind deaf and dumb about the facts of each substance. Isn't it time we do a major education on what is what (without vilification... again I refer to William Burroughs' extensive writings on the subject, and to Candice Pert's discovery of the neuropeptide and endorphin systems involved in addiction) when it comes to substances that Americans put into their bodies on a daily basis? Sometimes helping them, but often killing them... us.

Uh-oh. Someone mentioned the 'E' word(education).
Repugnicons won't like that at all. Look for them to block anything of the sort.

I was just counting the seconds before someone had to make some kind of political connection to this story about Burt AND that it would insult the Repubs in some way.

Some celebrities need to be saved from themselves; others aren't worth the time and effort salvaging. Whatever happens with Burt remains to be seen.

This from Wikipedia entry footnote on Reynolds sums up why I have always respected him, aside from having enjoyed a lot of his movies, from the silliest to the more serious. (I mean, how can you NOT like Burt and Sally Fields in the Smokey and the Bandit movies). And few can deny that "Deliverance" is a classic film.

"Burt Reynolds received a lifetime achievement award from Best Buddies Canada. The Oscar-nominated actor received the honour at a benefit gala with musical guest Chantal Kreviazuk in Toronto on September 10, 2007. Best Buddies Canada is a national charitable organization dedicated to fostering friendships between students and individuals with intellectual disabilities. Reynolds is receiving its annual award for his decades-long "commitment to aiding and inspiring youth by supporting drama education and humanitarian causes", said the group. Such causes include the Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre in Tequest, Florida, founded by the legendary actor in 1979. Donations by the star have also helped establish the Burt Reynolds Eminent Scholar Chair in Regional and Professional Theatre at Florida State University, and the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida Reynolds has already been honoured for his efforts in aiding the children of Chernobyl."
