ATLANTA — U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's oldest son defended his father against a claim by former President Jimmy Carter that the congressman's outburst during a speech by President Barack Obama was "based on racism."

Responding to an audience question at a town hall at his presidential center in Atlanta, Carter said Tuesday that Wilson's outburst was also rooted in fears of a black president.

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

But Wilson's son disputed that.

"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general in South Carolina. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won't comment on former President Carter, because I don't know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it's just not in him."

"It's unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree – and appropriately disagree – on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."

Carter, a Democrat, said Joe Wilson's outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators equating Obama to Nazi leaders.

"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," he said. "It's deeper than that."

Wilson's spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, was formally rebuked Tuesday in a House vote for shouting "You lie!" during Obama's speech to Congress last Wednesday.

The shout came after the president commented that illegal aliens would be ineligible for federal subsidies to buy health insurance. Republicans expressed their disbelief with sounds of disapproval, punctuated by Wilson's outburst.

Tuesday's rebuke was a rare resolution of disapproval pushed through by Democrats who insisted that Wilson had violated basic rules of decorum and civility. Republicans characterized the measure as a witch hunt and Wilson, who had already apologized to Obama, insisted he owed the House no apology.

South Carolina's former Democratic Party chairman also said he doesn't believe Wilson was motivated by racism, but said the outburst encouraged racist views.

"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said Dick Harpootlian, who has known Wilson for decades. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

Harpootlian said he received scores of racial e-mails from outside South Carolina after he talked about the vote on Fox News.

"You have a bunch of folks out there looking for some comfort in their racial issues. They have a problem with an African-American president," he said. "But was he motivated by that? I don't think so. I respectfully disagree with President Carter, though it gives validity to racism."

On Wednesday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele accused Democrats of using the race issue to shift attention away from the health care plan.

"President Carter is flat out wrong. This isn't about race. It is about policy," Steele said in a statement.

Carter called Wilson's comment "dastardly" and an aftershock of racist views that have permeated American politics for decades.

"The president is not only the head of government, he is the head of state," said Carter, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work to promote human rights and resolve international conflicts. "And no matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect."

As president, Carter appointed record numbers of women, blacks, and Hispanics to government jobs. Under The Carter Center, Carter and his team of experts work to resolve conflict and promote democracy, among other goals.

Wilson, a former state senator elected to Congress in 2001, is known as a mild-mannered lawmaker with hard-line conservative views. But he has been confrontational in the past.

In 2003, Wilson called it "unseemly" and a "smear" for the mixed-race daughter of Sen. Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, to identify the longtime South Carolina senator as her father after his death.

After a public outcry, he reversed course and said he had the utmost respect for Washington-Williams.

As a state senator, he was an outspoken opponent of efforts to remove the Confederate flag from atop the South Carolina Statehouse.

Rep. Joe Wilson rudely interrupted President Obama during his address to the joint session of the congress shouting “You lie”. The responses from the public and our politicians have been varied. Some said that he is just a jerk and not at all a racist. Others said that he is basically a rabid racist and acted like a jerk due to his hatred of our first black President. Some said that he is both a racist and a jerk. Another group of people have condoned and commended him on his outburst. However, we cannot disregard the fact that Joe Wilson’s rude outburst and subsequent ranting, was inappropriate. If he was truly concerned that the healthcare reform as presented by our President may enable the illegal aliens to reap the benefits, he would have or should have called the White House to discuss the issues either before or after the speech. President Obama has repeatedly said that he welcomes criticisms and suggestions from any body. Or Joe Wilson could/ should have presented his concerns to the various committee members formulating the final Bill. Nobody prevented him from raising these concerns in a civil and appropriate and timely manner. It is obvious that he wanted to disrespect and bring down the highest office of our country more than the redress of his concerns. More than likely, his outburst was due to his resentment of the person holding the office

President Carter is right. Wilson comes from a state with centuries of wall-to-wall racism. South Carolina, the home of John C. Calhoun, is the land where nullification and secession were born. It has always had a strong appetite for going against the national grain on just about everything. Secession talk is commonplace and is heard more frequently there than anywhere in Texas or other states..

You can't have 5/6 of the state in poverty while the Republicans play to the other 1/6 and not expect talk of civil war to grow. Dixie in general is becoming more isolated than ever before politically and culturally, and the Republican band loves playing that old tune that a black president just has to be repugnant to the vast majority of the people. An insult to southern pride and honor!

Until we get this hatred out our hearts, regardless of what race we are, American is doomed. I have seen some people who would hate a child based on his race, but would kill for their own. That's is surely sad. I think that if GOD would show up at this moment in America, and if he was a different color that what some us thought he was, some of us would go to "hell" that to accept his color, it's a shame, but this is our American people and their mindset, if you don't think like us, look like us, you are the enemy. We Americans will destroy each other, we don't have to worry about foreigners doing it. This is what happening in our U.S. Congress, each party haring each other, and we the people elected them.

TRUTH: I lived in the south and it didn't bother me that blacks had separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, and rode in the back of the bus that I rode. My family treated them kindly ... they were always there when we were ill or needed help. Now that I am in the North, it bothers me to think about some of the things they had to endure. When I go back to visit, many of them still try to stay away from each other. I'm happy we elected President Obama.

Alan,
We reget to inform you that your father, Joe Wilson,

member of the Sons of the Confederacy,

formally rebuked by his House of Representatives colleagues for abusing 200 years of decorum,

who showed disrespect for the POTUS even though he raised you and your brother to respect everyone (regardless of background or race, I guess he doesn't ascribe to his own teachings....)

is, in fact, demonstrating r@cist behavior.

Please confine him to his room until he can accept full responsibility for his atrocious behavior.

The GOP has demonstrated time and again that it is a racist party. Not every Republican is a racist, but many racists appear to gravitate toward that party. Given America's changing demographics, the GOP's days are numbered.

Any man that would call the illegitimate daughter of Strom Thurmond a "stain" on Thurmond's record is a RACIST of the worst type. Joe Wilson didn't think that there was anything wrong with Strom commit statutory rape when he was a 22 yrs old and he got the 16 year old African-American maid pregnant. No, that was just fine with Joe Wilson.
But Joe Wilson had the unmitigated nerve to call the child of that rape a "stain" on the good record of Strom Thurmond when she disclosed who she was. Joe Wilson initially publicly called her a liar for saying she was a child of Thurmond's. When it was proved beyond doubt that she was NOT lying and that she was the biological child of Thurmond- did Joe Wilson apologize? Yes....but he maintained that this daughter should have kept her mouth shut "out of respect" for Strom. Yes, according to Joe Wilson-men who commit statutory rape of young girls employed in their parent's home need to be shown respect by keeping the news of any illegitimate children a secret. God knows that's standard protocol for the deep south.
So, Carter Wilson....I've got news for you. Your father not only has one racist bone in his body-but his entire skeletal frame is racist through and through. Time to take off the blinders and see him for who he is...

Where are the apologies from Speaker Nancy Pelosi accusing the CIA of lying though an intelligence report indicates that she was briefed on the use of harsh interrogation tactics in 2002; contradicting her previous statements Charlie Rangel who is under investigation for misusing rent controlled properties, avoiding taxes, and using U.S. government letterhead to raise money. John Murtha and Peter Visclosky both have been linked to lobbying firm PMA, which has been raided twice by FBI agents. Edolphus Towns who refused to subpoena Countrywide Mortgage documents to investigate possible sweetheart loans; Towns received two loans from Countrywide. John Conyers who forced aides to perform personal tasks against ethics rules and had them work on "several local and state campaigns including his wife's failed bid for a seat in the state senate."
