Iraqi Shot After Throwing Slipper At US Patrol

FALLUJAH, Iraq — American Marines shot and wounded an Iraqi man in the former flash point city of Fallujah believing he was throwing a grenade at them, the U.S. military said Thursday – but local police and witnesses said the object was only the man's slipper.

During a joint patrol of U.S. Marines and Iraqi security forces in Fallujah, 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Baghdad, the man "threw an object, believed to be a grenade" at the passing troops on Wednesday afternoon, according to a U.S. military statement.

"U.S. forces fired in self-defense, wounding the attacker," the military said. "The convoy stopped, secured the area and began to render medical aid."

The man, Ahmed al-Jumaili, was rushed to a local hospital and was in stable condition there Thursday after being treated for a chest wound and two bullet grazes.

Although the incident came just a day after the Iraqi reporter who threw his shoes at former President George W. Bush was released from prison, al-Jumaili said he took off his leather slipper and threw it in a knee-jerk reaction to seeing the patrol.

"When I saw Americans patrolling the streets of Fallujah I lost my temper, I don't want to see them in Fallujah," he told The Associated Press. "Troops have withdrawn from cities so why they still patrolling here in Fallujah?"

Under the U.S.-Iraqi security agreement, American forces ceased operating on their own in cities and towns earlier this summer but still go on joint patrols. The agreement calls for the withdrawal of American combat forces by the end of August 2010 and of all U.S. troops by the end of the following year.

The U.S. military did not say in its statement what the thrown object was, and in response to a request for clarification said the object had not been recovered.

"The Marines who saw the object thrown at the vehicle identified it as a grenade," spokeswoman 1st Lt. Rachel Beatty said. "Because the suspected grenade was not recovered, we do not know why it had failed to function."

However, a Fallujah police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk with the press, said al-Jumaili had only thrown his slipper.

Shopkeeper Ammar Hussein, who knows al-Jumaili, said he witnessed the incident.

"I saw him throw his shoe while the U.S. soldier was looking at him," Hussein said, adding that the act was out of character for al-Jumaili. "He was always so calm, I never saw him behaving strangely."

Al-Jumaili, a 30-year-old auto mechanic, said he ran after throwing his slipper, but was slowed after a bullet grazed his leg.

"More bullets were fired and one hit me from behind and went through my chest, and I fell down," he said from the hospital, surrounded by his mother and other family members.

The U.S. military said the Marines' response was "done in compliance with the security agreement between the U.S. and Iraq which authorizes U.S. forces to take appropriate action in self-defense."

Elsewhere in Iraq, a suicide car bomber hit a police checkpoint west of the northern city of Mosul, killing three civilians and injuring three policemen, provincial police said.

Also in the north, in the Kurdish province of Sulaimaniyah, a worker with a Norwegian aid agency who had been abducted was found alive, the agency said.

Soran Coste was found early in the morning after being reported missing Monday, Norwegian People's Aid said in a statement on their Web site. He "shows obvious signs of physical abuse" and is receiving medical treatment, the group said.

NPA said it had no details on what happened to Coste or who was behind the abduction. But the statement said Coste, who runs human rights and democracy programs in the region for the Norwegian group, has had his home vandalized and has received death threats in the past.

In Kirkuk, police Col. Sherzad Mufari said one of his sergeants was arrested in connection with the murder of his own family as they slept early Sunday morning. Sgt. Omed Abdul-Hamid initially blamed the slayings on insurgents, but later confessed to shooting his wife and three young children, Mufari said.

Confessions are often suspect in Iraq, where rights groups say they are sometimes extracted under duress.

Our troops are stressed out and they're on the edge in a country where any citizen could be their potential killer.

This why they should pack up and go home. As uninvited guests, the Iraqis will shed not tears on their departure.

Eight years and all that fire-power and this is the best we can do? Fighting terrorist slippers?

He asked for it after all who's country is it anyway, we won it fair and square. We are just trying to bring about law and order.

I am not going to link to it but there are horrible propaganda videos posted by the insurgents showing insurgents in civilian clothes on crowded streets killing US soldiers with Anti-Armor grenades thrown from the road side. This act is equivalent to threating and then pointing an unloaded gun at the President or at a cop, the only possible outcome of this act is the person being shot.

This incident reveals what is so shockingly frightening about occupations. We can do anything and just call it self-defense and move on. In the process, people are left dead and wounded. Obviously, it is no way to build a democracy and reason why next time- let's just stay home!

Don't be dense. The troops still there are trying to help. That said, you're in a country where soldiers are being killed every day, and suddenly you see someone throwing an object at you in a place where roadside bombs and suicide attacks are common.

Honestly, what did he expect? They'd giggle? Those rifles are in their hands for a reason.

That is one possible moral. There are certainly others. If this had been a grenade, and if a U.S. soldier had been killed, would you be saying "Moral of the story: don't invade countries?"

Iraqi insurgents have used Russian anti-armor grenades thrown from the road side against US vehicles with devastating effect. The grenades have a shaped charge warhead that can penetrate US Humvee, Stryker, or MRAP armor. The insurgents will throw the grenades from a crowded area and run into the crowds of civilians hoping the US troops will fire and kill civilians turning more people against Americans.

These attacks are rare because they attackers are very often killed or captured but they are very effective because of the power of the Russian anti-armor grenades. During WWII the Russians did not have an effective standoff anti-armor infantry weapon but they developed very effective anti-armor grenades and used them very effective against German Tanks in often suicidal massed infantry charges.

Something does NOT add up with this story. I need to know the times that elapsed as follows and what precisely happened during each such segment:
1. Between the guy raising his hand to throw the slipper and it being spotted by the patrol.
2. Between the patrol spotting the "object" coming towards them and the first shot fired by them.
3. Between the time the "object" landed and the patrol's surrounding the fallen Iraqi.

Add to the above, what is the training such soldiers have and what orders are given to them BEFORE going out on such patrols? Is it first to take cover, or, shoot first, then questions after?

[Questions posed on behalf of one who was involved in wartime combat but who's not a Huffo blogger.]

I commend your desire to have all the facts before passing judgement. I think that should all of our goals before making up our mind.

My personal opinion is this: In a war where there are suicide bombers and what amount to guerrilla warfare, I don't expect our soldiers to wait to see if a guy is going to blow up before engaging him. There are a few things that should probably be common knowledge over there, like "Don't run towards a convoy of solders" and "Don't do anything threatening towards armed soldiers." That stuff just seems like common sense to me.

On the bigger picture, I think we need to get out of Iraq as fast as possible -- and that we shouldn't have been there in the first place. But I refuse to place blame on our soldiers for responding to a hostile in whatever way they deem necessary in the moment. These guys live in a constant state of stress (whether they realize it or not) for 8-12 months at a time -- it is to be expected that if somebody throws something roughly the size of a grenade that they would think it is a grenade.

Similar to Palestinians throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers. Is there something not quite right with the Arab mind?

Get the hell out and no one will throw slipper.
Beware the 'armed ones' in USA.
Beware of them ......rather than the 'Arab' mind (with stones and slippers)

Newsflash

Its a cruel world, in fact its a cruel universe. Mother Nature is cruel, humanity is cruel. Violence is natural... and by the way, its part of evolution. You can't evolve out of self preservation (as a species). The planet is always just a few cash crops away from global chaos.

Well, they did shoot the jerk to pieces. Then they went over and patched him back together, and took him to a hospital. Right moves all around.

That's weak, dude. Do you have any idea what you're talking about? My cousin went to Westpoint and was a tank commander in Iraq. I know firsthand how outrageous of a statement that is. That sounds more like a 'you' problem.

In a country where they booby trap everything including animals to kill our troops the Iraqi citizen was a fool to throw anything at them. His fault.
