Max Cleland

In his upcoming book, "Heart of a Patriot", former Senator and decorated Vietnam War veteran Max Cleland unloads on his political nemeses and dishes some details on his friend Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.

After the inauguration of George W. Bush, Cleland used to joke with colleagues that the nation was about to get "screwed" -- and during the Bush presidency he says he suffered "the darkest days of my life."

For me, the inauguration of George W. Bush as president ushered in a period I can only describe as unshirted hell.

In his detailed recounting of that hellish time, Cleland in particular expresses outrage at the negative ads that cost him his Senate seat. Republican challenger Saxby Chambliss ran TV commercials featuring Cleland alongside photos of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, falsely implying that the Senator had voted against the proposed Department of Homeland Security,

Soon after the ad started running, GOP Senators John McCain and Chuck Hagel expressed their outrage at the dirty tactics. Cleland says that Hagel approached him and went so far as to offer to do a TV spot rebutting the hateful Chambliss ad "even though it was being aired by his own party."

Saxby Chambliss got wind of what Hagel had proposed. He called Chuck seven times in one day begging him not to side with me. Hagel asked him to take the ad down. Instead, Chambliss modified the ad somewhat, but still ran it.

Cleland still burns with indignation when he recalls the campaign and the negative ads that hurt McCain during the 2000 primary in South Carolina and the Swift Boat Veterans ads that helped defeat John Kerry in 2004:

The attacks on McCain, Kerry and me, all decorated wounded combat veterans, are a shameful legacy of the Bush administration, and among the most shameful political stunts in the nation's history.

One of Cleland's aides, Trey Ragsdale, was in the same intern class as Lewinsky and Cleland writes that Ragsdale told him that Lewinsky was on the prowl for the president from the moment she arrived in Washington, D.C.

Soon after arriving in the capital, Ragsdale, Lewinsky and other interns started going out to a local bar for drinks where the conversation turned to what they'd all like to do in Washington from visiting museums to padding resumes. According to Cleland, Lewinksy's response stunned the group: "I want to earn my presidential knee pads."

Later, Ragsdale realized that he was being used by Lewinsky to facilitate her intentions and then to serve as cover during the affair. Cleland relates that his aide was constantly being invited by Lewinsky to snacks in the White House mess hall because Ragsdale could escort her into the White House - she lacked the proper credentials.

The first time she came for snacks with Trey, the president made an appearance. Mysteriously, President Clinton was always there in the mess on the days Monica asked Trey to bring her for snacks. And each time the leader of the free world visited this pair of lowly interns. After this scenario played out several times, Trey became suspicious. He ultimately came to realize he was only being used as a cover to set up meetings between Monica and the president. In effect, Trey was being used to get Monica signed in to the White House without involving anyone on the president's staff.

During the Clinton impeachment vote, which Cleland opposed, the former Senator was suffering mono and he claims that one of his former colleagues ended up making him sicker.

"I wrapped a green scarf around my neck, trying to keep warm. Pete Domenici, the senator from New Mexico, insisted I remove my scarf, as it 'violated the decorum of the Senate.'" Cleland took it off and says he soon felt that he could hardly hold his head up and eventually came down with a massive sinus infection.

An aide to Domenici did not return calls from Huffington Post to respond to Cleland's claim.

I would only like to offer one comment concerning Senator (AND DISABLED VET) Max Cleland, and that is from another disabled vet (myself), Thank you for serving and being my brother and brother to all the others of us who served. Your comments regarding John Kerry, and John McCain, and what had been done to discredit the three of you combined is disgraceful.

You are a Hero Max, and your wanting to serve myself and all of us who wore the uniforms of our country are proud to call you brother.

Bill

Until I have read your book, Max, I will not get hung up on one re-commented comment. I saw you on Charlie Rose and decided then that your book was next on my Amazon list to buy. Just after "In Praise of Slowness", which I desperately need. In the meantime, I want you to know that I have admired you for many years, and with a son in Iraq, I especially feel a strong appreciation for your service. My best to you and to your father.

That those despicable Vietnam dodging cowards had the audacity to defame those honorable men and not be chastised by the public and the press brings a shame upon our nation that will never be forgotten.

Cleland's aide's report of Lewinsky being after WJC from day #1 is similar to what a high-school friend of my daughter, who later worked in the Clinton WH, said.

She said that Lewinsky was always there, and obviously flirting with WJC.

My daughter's friend, a beautiful young woman, said, that WJC did not in any way act inappropriately towards her or any of her friends in the WH.

I'm not saying that WJC isn't an adulterous fool, what I'm saying is that WJC does not appear to have approached other interns, and it was clear Lewinsky was stalking him.

Lewisnsky was stalking WJC...So what?
He was the leader of the United States and arguably the free world...as such he needed the discipline and inner strength to stand up threats to our national security, tyrants, petty dictators, natural disasters and crisis of all types. I think it safe to say he should have been able to say no to a 21 year old wacked-out, overwieght intern.

This just makes him look more ridculous than he already did concerning this whole affair.

I expected better from Max Cleland. I've never forgiven Chambliss for those ads, so it's not a partisan issue. To me, it shows no class to publish such a quote. I was uncomfortable with the airing of Sanford's e-mails as well. Tacky, Max. What would your mother have thought?

What in the world is wrong with a person telling the truth about cruel actions towards him by other politicians?

Not only does Cleland have the right to tell what happened to him and the impact it had on him. He also has the duty to speak out on what he knows so that others know the true purulent filth that oozes around in the GOP.

Are you living in negative land or something? Veterans serve and make sacrifices (physically & mentally), then return home to begin public service only to be attacked by draft dodging hypocrites and you have a problem with Cleland? See this is why it's not safe for sane folks to visit the US. Far too many unstable minds wandering about.

I will dislike Saxby Chambliss until he's done with politics. He played it dirty again last year. I'm glad Max told the truth - the idea that anyone would attack a vet like Max with sick lies like that makes me crazy.

With all due respect to the above posts....

WTH? I'm pointing out that I personally don't like to read about somebody's sexual escapades (i.e., the Lewinsky quote). I am not, nor have I ever defended Chambliss. I didn't utter a single word condemning Cleland's factual account of what happened to him....just the passing along of the Lewinsky garbage which should never have been made public to begin with. It was never our business, in my opinion. Maybe you guys/gals could take a minute and re-read the comment. I think there's been a *big* misunderstanding here.

Notice the republicans were SOO concerned about the decorum of Congress.

Except when it was Dick Cheney telling Leahey to F himself. Or Wilson shouting out at the President.

Hypocrites, every last one of the them.

Young girls do embarassing things. At some point Democrats are going to have to forgive her, and move on.

I don't know one Democrat who in any way feels badly about Lewinsky, or blames her for anything that happened to WJC because of his decision to start yet another affair when he was still being deposed for the Paula Jones incident.

What they did to the Senator was despicable.

Have you raised your voice in protest?

It's interesting that Monica was so gung-ho about getting her Presidential knee pads and went to such lengths to achieve it. It's almost as if she was on a mission. Get in the House, get on your knees, get the dress, win the cigar, bring down a President at a critical time in history. I wonder if the true story of this will ever be known? Maybe a book. How to go down on...er... bring down a President.

I think her sole interest was going down on the President, not bringing him down.

She was a groupy. Anyone familiar with the rock and roll scene knows what they are.

I was never surprised by what she was up to. Just par for the course.

Going after a politician rather than a rock star. But other than that, pretty common.

I'd like to know when Ragsdale went to work for Cleland and when he learned about Lewinsky.

These politicians and their staffs are so concerned about loyalty to party and their own personal careers that they betray the country and the American people.

So tell me, where and when did Cleland or his staff betray the country?

Or do you believe he was in league with Osama bin Ladin?

P.S. How many limbs have you lost in the service of your country?
