New York Times:

Though official records are incomplete, it appears that the turnout in Tuesday's Democratic primary was the lowest in modern New York City history.

Despite pleasant weather and the efforts of candidates who crisscrossed the city for weeks, just 11 percent of enrolled Democrats went to the polls.

Why bother, they don't care what the voters want, just what inflates their egos and pocketbooks.

After voting last Tuesday, I felt enormously depressed. It was the worst I have ever felt on an election day. The outlook for this City's leadership is bleak. By overturning term limits, Mayor Bloomberg has hijacked the will of the people, and turned City Hall into his own fiefdom.

Well, you have to admit voting seems somewhat absurd when you see what voters get.
When was the last time you heard of an elected official standing up for democratic ideals in the face of our insanely corrupt banking system, our Bill-of-Rights-be-damned military and secret police or even one of the billion-dollar drug and healthcare companies?
As happened with most of history's attempts at representative democracy, the special interests -- factions -- have obliterated all hope of any positive change toward a better, more rational society.
When, just for the asking, any corporation can instantly get billions of tax dollars for the worst possible on-the-job performance, the tax-exempt super-rich secure all the financial power they'll ever need to buy controlling interest in every branch of government -- lock, stock and barrel.
No matter whom you vote for, you're going to be raped by the banks, stomped by the big corporations or arrested and held indefinitely without charge or trial -- if you're lucky. And it's all perfectly legal thanks to the rancid GOP appointees under Cheney, those feral men and women of the Cheney Administration who spent eight years frenetically laboring to destroy the American Bill of Rights.
Before we blame voter apathy, let's take a look at the weasels who swindled the voters and held power for the past decade, creatures who with utmost sincerity nuture the greatest possible contempt for ' We the people...'
